By virtue of his excellent Civil War record, Belknap became President Grant's Secretary of War. The excesses of the Gilded Age were in full flower. Railroad barons, gold speculators, arms dealers, land speculators, and purveyors of goods for the army flocked to Washington seeking contracts and favors. Cabinet members vied with each other to provide the most lavish entertainments on their meager salaries. Some Cabinet officers were rich, Belknap was poor. Graft was rampant and Belknap found ways to have his share. Soon money was flowing into his coffers and his wives could dress in Parisian gowns, live in mansions, give receptions for people at a time, and each wife, in succession, would be named "queen" of Washington society by the newspapers. But a day of reckoning did come with his impeachment and resignation in disgrace. This is not just the story of one more grafter from the Gilded Age of the Grant administration. The effects of the Belknap scandal are still felt today.

Vendo due bei libri biografici, con tantissime foto, su David Bowie, ed entrambi sono delle rare prime edizioni risalenti al ! "Bowiepix", è una prima edizione , originale inglese acquistato all'estero, di Edward Bell e Pearce Marchbank, edizione Omnibus Press. Libro fotografico in 4°, vera rarità e chicca per collezionisti appassionati di David Bowie! Su internet si trova dalle 50 fino alle 75 euro; io ne chiedo 30, perché su due o tre pagine all'inizio ci sono delle piccole annotazioni (che comunque non deturpano assolutamente il libro). "David Bowie - La biografia" è una prima edizione italiana del , per i Fratelli Gallo Editori. Grande libro in 4°, pp 100 circa non numerate, con tantissime foto in bianco e nero e a colori. Ottimo libro, difficile da trovare, molto ben tenuto, come l'altro ha solo alcune piccole note a margine, che non ne rovinano in niente la bellezza. Ne chiedo 20 euro. Se li acquistate tutti e due, vi faccio un bello sconto e con 40 li potete prendere entrambi! Preferirei trattare direttamente e non spedire, ma nel caso accetto pagamento anticipato tramite bonifico bancario, e le spese postali sono a carico vostro. Astenersi perditempo.
