I racconti presentati in questo volume rappresentano gran parte della produzione narrativa di Prosper Mérimée, il grande scrittore francese consigliere di Napoleone III e allievo di Stendhal. Si è cercato di rendere conto della notevole capacità, in Mérimée, di spaziare con disinvoltura da ambientazioni europee ad ambientazioni africane, da storie di mare a storie di salotto, dai temi dell'avventura a quello che oggi si chiamerebbe l'horror. I racconti sono stati raggruppati in base a tre sezioni tematiche: l'amore, l'inganno e l'avventura. Tra i racconti spicca quello che è considerato il capolavoro dello scrittore, "La Venere d'Ille", che è anche spesso indicata come il perfetto racconto fantastico, datato , precedente, cioè, alle opere del maestro indiscusso del genere, Edgar Allan Poe.
