ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Ball, Terence, PUBLISHER: State University of New York Press, A long-missing manuscript from a famous eighteenth-century philosopher with a dark secret, the late twentieth-century murder in Paris of a prominent Princeton professor -- and the connection between the two -- form the core of this fast-paced mystery novel. Set primarily in Paris and Oxford, Rousseau's Ghost weaves a riveting tale of scholarly intrigue and murder. An urgent but cryptic request from Professor Ted Porter summons his old friend and former Rhodes Scholar Jack Davis to Paris. Once there Jack finds his friend dead, apparently electrocuted by a faulty laptop computer. The Parisian police rule the death an accident and close the case. But Jack well knew his friend's deep aversion to modern technology, and to computers in particular, and believes the computer was not Ted's and his death no accident. Unable to convince the police, Jack begins his own investigation, aided by Danielle, a beautiful young French woman who claims to have been Ted's research assistant and sometime lover. Sifting through Ted's notes and an unfinished manuscript titled Rousseau's Ghost, he finds a mysterious entry: "Inst Pol?? " Not knowing what this might mean, he travels to Oxford to see his old tutor, who surmises that Ted's shorthand query refers to the Institutions Politiques, a manuscript on which Rousseau worked in the s but later abandoned and burned, except for the small section we now know as the Social Contract. Could the rest of the manuscript have survived? Could Ted have found it? If so, was he murdered for his discovery?

The epic tale of Harry Clifton's life begins in , with the words "I was told that my father was killed in the war." A dock worker in Bristol, Harry never knew his father, but he learns about life on the docks from his uncle, who expects Harry to join him at the shipyard once he's left school. But then an unexpected gift wins him a scholarship to an exclusive boys' school, and his life will never be the same again. As he enters into adulthood, Harry finally learns how his father really died, but the awful truth only leads him to question, was he even his father? This introductory novel in Archer's ambitious series The Clifton Chronicles includes a cast of colorful characters and takes us from the ravages of the Great War to the outbreak of the Second World War, when Harry must decide whether to take up a place at Oxford or join the navy and go to war with Hitler's Germany. ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Hossler, Don / Schmit, Jack / Vesper, Nick, PUBLISHER: Johns Hopkins University Press, Going to College tells the powerful story of how high school students make choices about postsecondary education. Drawing on their unprecedented nine-year study of high school students, the authors explore how students and their parents negotiate these important decisions. Family background, finances, education, information -- all influence students' plans after high school and the career paths they pursue, as do the more subtle messages delivered by parents and counselors which shape adolescents' self-expectations. For high school guidance counselors, college admissions counselors, parents and teachers, and public policy makers, this book is a valuable resource that explains the decision-making process and helps adults to help students make appropriate choices. The authors identify predisposition, search, and choice as the three stages in the student decision-making process. Predisposition refers to the plans students develop for education or work after they graduate from high school. The search stage involves students discovering and evaluating a variety of colleges and universities. In the choice stage, students choose a school to attend from among a list of institutions that are being seriously considered. Understanding exactly how students move through the predisposition, search, and choice stages of the college decision-making process can help students and parents prepare themselves for this process and consider a wider array of options. For education professionals, understanding this process can lead to new initiatives to guide students and families effectively -- by providing better incentives for college savings, for example, or devising more effective early informationprograms about postsecondary education. Going to Collegeis the first book to seriously study over an extended period the decisions that have a pervasive and lasting impact on individual careers, livelihoods, and lifestyles. The authors conclude with important recommendations for improving academic support, exploring various financial options, providing early encouragement -- in other words, for recognizing the factors that influence students' decisions, and knowing when to pay attention to them.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Barrett, Katharine / Willard, Carolyn, PUBLISHER: Great Explorations in Math & Science (Gems), In this series of outdoor, life-science investigations for grades 3-6, the schoolyard, is the environment to be investigated. Many ecological, environmental, and life science concepts are explored. Students learn biological sampling techniques; mapping and related mathematical skills are developed. In addition to temporarily collecting samples in "shake boxes," investigations focus on ants and spiders, and can be extended in many directions. Students learn that a bush may be home to a "community" of interacting plants and animals. Based on their observations and findings, students select a small area as their favorite location. Environmental writing about their favorite locations crowns the closing activity. This guide is designed to spark student curiosity about the patterns and interactions in nature, beginning with their immediate environment-the schoolyard. TABLE OF CONTENTS: Introduction Time Frame Activity 1 Exploring the Schoolyard Study Area Activity 2 Finding and Observing Spiders Tales from the Web Activity 3 Discovering Animal Communities Activity 4 Tracking Ants Activity 5 Special Study Sites Behind the Scenes Guide to small Common Schoolyard Animals Spider Web Identification key Resources Assessment Suggestions Literature Connections Summary Outlines "In this era of hype about hands-on activities, the school yard is too often given short shrift, except for occasional nature walks.... The book, a product of a team effort, underwent extensive tryout and review by teachers and specialists, and it shows."-"Science Books & Films," August/September "Overall this is a very thorough presentation of five excellentecological activities for children. This is the way science should be taught. The investigations encourage children to learn by "doing" and to discover for themselves how organisms interact with each other and their environment. The activities are also invaluable because they foster in children an appreciation and stewardship for other living things. If they can be taught to value spiders and ants, the rest will be easy."-"The American Biology Teacher," May
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Kozel, Susan, PUBLISHER: MIT Press (MA), In "Closer, " Susan Kozel draws on live performance practice, digital technologies, and the philosophical approach of phenomenology. Trained in dance and philosophy, Kozel places the human body at the center of explorations of interactive interfaces, responsive systems, and affective computing, asking what can be discovered as we become closer to our computers--as they become extensions of our ways of thinking, moving, and touching. Performance, Kozel argues, can act as a catalyst for understanding wider social and cultural uses of digital technology. Taking this one step further, performative acts of sharing the body through our digital devices foster a collaborative construction of new physical states, levels of conscious awareness, and even ethics. We reencounter ourselves and others through our interactive computer systems. What we need now are conceptual and methodological frameworks to reflect this. Kozel offers a timely reworking of the phenomenology of French philosopher Maurice Merleau-Ponty. This method, based on a respect for lived experience, begins by listening to the senses and noting insights that arrive in the midst of dance, or quite simply in the midst of life. The combination of performance and phenomenology offered by "Closer" yields entwinements between experience and reflection that shed light on, problematize, or restructure scholarly approaches to human bodies using digital technologies. After outlining her approach and methodology and clarifying the key concepts of performance, technologies, and virtuality, Kozel applies phenomenological method to the experience of designing and performing in a range of computational systems: telematics, motion capture, responsive architectures, and wearable computing. The transformative potential of the alchemy between bodies and technologies is the foundation of "Closer." With careful design, future generations of responsive systems and mobile devices can expand our social, physical, and emotional exchanges.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Cox, David / Little, John / O'Shea, Donal, PUBLISHER: Springer, Algebraic Geometry is the study of systems of polynomial equations in one or more variables, asking such questions as: Does the system have finitely many solutions, and if so how can one find them? And if there are infinitely many solutions, how can they be described and manipulated? The solutions of a system of polynomial equations form a geometric object called a variety; the corresponding algebraic object is an ideal. There is a close relationship between ideals and varieties which reveals the intimate link between algebra and geometry. Written at a level appropriate to undergraduates, this book covers such topics as the Hilbert Basis Theorem, the Nullstellensatz, invariant theory, projective geometry, and dimension theory. The algorithms to answer questions such as those posed above are an important part of algebraic geometry. Although the algorithmic roots of algebraic geometry are old, it is only in the last forty years that computational methods have regained their earlier prominence. New algorithms, coupled with the power of fast computers, have led to both theoretical advances and interesting applications, for example in robotics and in geometric theorem proving. In addition to enhancing the text of the second edition, with over 200 pages reflecting changes to enhance clarity and correctness, this third edition of Ideals, Varieties and Algorithms includes: A significantly updated section on Maple in Appendix C; Updated information on AXIOM, CoCoA, Macaulay 2, Magma, Mathematica and SINGULAR; A shorter proof of the Extension Theorem presented in Section 6 of Chapter 3. From the 2nd Edition: "I consider the book to be wonderful.... The exposition is very clear, there are many helpful pictures, and there are a great many instructive exercises, some quite challenging... offers the heart and soul of modern commutative and algebraic geometry." -The American Mathematical Monthly
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Shakespeare, William, PUBLISHER: Barron's Educational Series, This tragedy tells of a power-hungry Scottish nobleman and his lady, and the price they pay for violently seizing the royal throne. Books in this new, illustrated series present complete texts of Shakespeare's plays. However, the lines are set up so students can see the bard's original poetic phrases printed side-by-side and line-by-line with a modern "translation" on the facing page. Starting in the late s and for several decades that followed, Shakespeare's plays were popular entertainment for London's theatergoers. His Globe Theatre was the equivalent of a Broadway theater in today's New York. The plays have endured, but over the course of 400+ years, the English language has changed in many ways--which is why today's students often find Shakespeare's idiom difficult to comprehend. "Simply Shakespeare" offers an excellent solution to their problem. Introducing each play is a general essay covering Shakespeare's life and times. At the beginning of each of the five acts in every play, a two-page spread describes what is about to take place. The story's background is explained, followed by brief descriptions of key people who will appear in the act, details students should watch for as the story unfolds, discussion of the play's historical context, how the play was staged in Shakespeare's day, and explanation of puns and plays on words that occur in characters' dialogues. Identifying icons preceding each of these study points are printed in a second color, then are located again as cross-references in the play's original text. For instance, where words spoken by a person in the play offer insights into his or another character's personality, the "Characters" icon will appear as a cross-reference in both the introductory spread and the play proper. Following each act, a closing spread presents questions and discussion points for use as teachers' aids. Guided by the inspiring format of this fine new series, both teachers and students will come to understand and appreciate the genius of Shakespeare as never before.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Malcolmson, Patrick / Myers, Richard, PUBLISHER: University of Toronto Press, This clear and readable account of Canada's political institutions has now been updated to reflect developments up to and beyond the Canadian federal election. Focusing more on principles than on arcane detail, the authors explain why our institutions are the way they are. In so doing, they improve the reader's ability to assess the implications of various proposals for reform of our institutions (such as electing senators, recall of MPs, and review of Supreme Court nominees). Comments from previous editions:.".. far and away the best of the Canadian government texts I've seen." - David J. Climenhaga, Southern Alberta Institute of Technology "Malcolmson and Myers have written a comprehensive and coherent account of Canadian government that is informed by a clear understanding of the purposes, capacities, and limitations of liberal democratic institutions." - Jennifer Smith, Dalhousie University "The Canadian Regime is designed to be an introductory Canadian government text. It fulfills that purpose admirably but I would add that this is a book all Canadians should read and have on their shelves.... It is brief and it is clear, but most especially it provides an outstanding explantion for why Canada's government takes the form it does. Its virtue is that it explains Canada's system instead of merely describing its features. It indicates the underlying rationale of the institutions and processes of government in a way that most descriptive texts do not, for it provides a causal analysis. It is this explanatory quality that makes this text so good. It starts with the basic idea of government and proceeds rationally to the conclusion, building on the fundamental principles of liberal democracy as they have taken shape in Canada. "I believe this book could become a classic in the explanation of our regime. It is a useful tool for understanding current politics and it helps citizens distinguish between foolish and reasonable proposals for change. And, finally, it is written so sensibly and with such clear examples that it works as an 'inoculation' against some of the most disturbing fashions of interpretation among ideologues and the media." - Heidi Studer, University of Alberta Patrick Malcolmson is currently Vice-President (Academic) at St. Thomas University in Fredericton, New Brunswick and formerly served as the Chair of the New Brunswick Human Rights Commission. Richard Myers is Professor of Political Science and former Vice-President (Academic) at St. Thomas University in Fredericton, New Brunswick.

Bruised in body and psyche from his adventures in At Risk, Steve gets another blow in Dead Man's Touch, the sudden death of his estranged father in an automobile accident. At the funeral, Steve's disgruntled older brother calls him a bastard--and means it. Literally. Steve, he reveals, is the product of an affair. Curiosity gets the best of Steve, who's on leave from his job at Foxdale stables, so he heads for the Maryland track where he can find Kessler. Publishers Weekly adds: "Both horse lovers and crime fans who've never stepped into a stirrup will relish Ehrman's riveting debut."
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Fishman, Ted, PUBLISHER: Simon & Schuster, China today is visible everywhere -- in the news, in the economic pressures battering america, in the workplace, and in every trip to the store. provocative, timely, and essential, this dramatic account of china's growing dominance as an industrial super-power by journalist Ted C. Fishman explains how the profound shift in the global economic order has occurred -- and why it already affects us all. How has an enormous country once hobbled by poverty and Communist ideology come to be the supercharged center of global capitalism? What does it mean that China now grows three times faster than the United States? That China uses 40 percent of the world's concrete and 25 percent of its steel? What is the global impact of 300 million rural Chinese walking off their farms and heading to the cities in the greatest migration in human history? Why do nearly all of the world's biggest companies now have large-scale operations in China? What does the corporate march into China mean for workers left behind in America, Europe, and the rest of the world? Meanwhile, what makes China's emerging corporations so dangerously competitive? What could happen when China will be able to manufacture nearly "everything" -- computers, cars, jumbo jets, and pharmaceuticals -- that the United States and Europe can, at perhaps half the cost? How do these developments reach around the world and straight into the lives of all Americans? These are ground-shaking questions, and "China, Inc." provides answers.Veteran journalist and former commodities trader Ted C. Fishman paints a vivid picture of the megatrends radiating out of China. Fishman's account begins with the burgeoning output of China's vast low-cost factories and the swelling appetite of its 1.3 billion consumers, both of which are being driven by historically unprecedented infusions of foreign capital and technological know-how. Traveling through China's frenetic landscape of growth, Fishman visits the factories, markets, streets, stores, towns, and cities where the story of Chinese capitalism is being lived by one-fifth of all humanity. Fishman also draws on interviews with Chinese, American, and European workers, managers, and executives to show how China will force all of us to make big changes in how we think about ourselves as consumers, workers, citizens, and even as parents. The result is a richly engaging work of penetrating, up-to-the-minute reportage and brilliant analysis that will forever change how readers think about America's future.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Logan, Shirley Wilson, PUBLISHER: Southern Illinois University Press, "O woman, woman upon you I call; for upon your exertions almost entirely depends whether the rising generation shall be any thing more than we have been or not. O woman, woman your example is powerful, your influence great."--Maria W. Stewart, "An Address Delivered Before the Afric-American Female Intelligence Society of Boston" () Here--in the only collection of speeches by nineteenth-century African-American women--is the battle of words these brave women waged to address the social ills of their century. While there have been some scattered references to the unique roles these early "race women" played in effecting social change, until now few scholars have considered the rhetorical strategies they adopted to develop their powerful arguments. In this chronological anthology, Shirley Wilson Logan highlights the public addresses of these women, beginning with Maria W. Stewart's speech at Franklin Hall in , believed to be the first delivered to an audience of men and women by an American-born woman. In her speech, she focused on the plight of the Northern free black. Sojourner Truth spoke in at the Akron, Ohio, Women's Rights Convention not only for the rights of black women but also for the rights of all oppressed nineteenth-century women. Frances Ellen Watkins Harper struggled with the conflict between universal suffrage and suffrage for black men. Anna Julia Cooper chastised her unique audience of black Episcopalian clergy for their failure to continue the tradition of the elevation of womanhood initiated by Christianity and especially for their failure to support the struggling Southern black woman. Ida B. Wells's rhetoric targeted mob violence directed at Southern black men. Her speech was delivered less than a year after her inaugural lecture on this issue--following a personal encounter with mob violence in Memphis. Fannie Barrier Williams and Victoria Earle Matthews advocated social and educational reforms to improve the plight of Southern black women. These speeches--all delivered between and --are stirring proof that, despite obstacles of race and gender, these women still had the courage to mount the platform in defense of the oppressed. Introductory essays focus on each speaker's life and rhetoric, considering the ways in which these women selected evidence and adapted language to particular occasions, purposes, and audiences in order to persuade. This analysis of the rhetorical contexts and major rhetorical tactics in the speeches aids understanding of both the speeches and the skill of the speakers. A rhetorical timeline serves as a point of reference. Historically grounded, this book provides a black feminist perspective on significant events of the nineteenth century and reveals how black women of that era influenced and were influenced by the social problems they addressed. ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Murphy, Shirley Rousseau, PUBLISHER: William Morrow & Company, In this poignant new entry in Shirley Rousseau Murphy's beloved, award-winning series, feline P.I. Joe Grey and his four-legged cohorts are plunged into a nightmarish mystery involving a series of strange events that endangers them and the humans they love The confusing events that early fall in Molena Point began perhaps with the return of Kate Osborne, the beguiling blond divorcee arriving in California richer than sin and with a story as strange as the melodies spun by a modern Pied Piper to mesmerize the unwary. Or maybe the strangeness started with the old faded photograph of a child from a half-century past, and the memories she awakened in the old yellow tomcat. Perhaps that was the beginning of the odd occurrences that stirred through the coastal village, setting the five cats off on new paths.... On the way home from visiting their friend Kate Osborne in San Francisco, tortoiseshell Kit and her elderly housemates, Lucinda and Pedric Greenlaw, are hurt in a terrible car crash on a winding coastal road. The accident is terrifying enough, but then two dangerous men steal the Greenlaws' town car, making off with a secret hoard of jewels and gold--a gift bestowed from Kate's newfound treasure--carefully hidden inside its doors. As paramedics rush the Greenlaws to the emergency room, a badly shaken Kit hides from hungry coyotes in the forested hills above the highway, waiting for Joe, Pan, and their human companions, Ryan and Clyde Damen, to rescue her. Back home in Molena Point, yellow tomcat Misto, discovering a faded photograph of a child living fifty years ago, becomes lost in his memories of that past century--while Joe Grey and his tabby lady prowl an abandoned stone cottage where they've discovered two rough-looking men hiding. The cats smell mildewed money, and soon smell human blood, too, and they wonder: Could these unsettling incidents be tied to the injury of the Greenlaws and to the theft of their car and treasure? Could they be, as well, part of the larger mystery involving the very source of the cats' magical powers? Misto and his unfailing memory might provide some answers, but his feline detective efforts are nearly derailed when Misto's son, Pan, the bold red tomcat, led on by the Greenlaws' exotic treasure and by his taste for adventure, drives a painful wedge between himself and Kit, just when their romance feels so filled with joy. But Kit is busy with other matters, too, as she follows the two housebreakers, one badly injured and the other eager to end his partner's misery, as they make off with more wealth than even they realize. Though the cats know more than the thieves about the unique items stolen, their investigation is still in trouble. Only slowly, and after two sudden murders, do they at last claw their way to the truth, examining more intently the source of the gold and jewels, understanding more clearly, as well, the secrets of the moldering treasury bills--the mystery of their source
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: McStravick, Summer, PUBLISHER: Hay House, This beautiful hardcover book comes with an instructional CD to teach you the art of Flowdreaming. Author Summer McStravick pioneered this fascinating technique that rolls the best of meditation, affirmations, self-hypnosis, prayer, and creative visualization into a powerful technique that can turn anyone into a true "manifestor." This step-by-step instructional book, which includes a full-length introductory Flowdreaming CD, shows you how to find the Flow--a place accessible in our minds, where our quantum reality emerges as an energetic, cosmic river that flows in a positive direction throughout our lives. Flowdreaming is both a fascinating philosophy and a simple technique to help you start manifesting your future in this great energetic space. Summer's powerful abilities and understanding of universal energies has been recognized by such preeminent teachers as Dr. Wayne Dyer, Gregg Braden, Cheryl Richardson, Denise Linn, Carol Ritberger, and Colette Baron-Reid. She has emerged as a leader in the field of manifesting and has been referred to as a rare teacher of the "mysteries." If you enjoy writers such as Esther and Jerry Hicks, Dr. Wayne Dyer, Gregg Braden, Eckhart Tolle, or Sandra Anne Taylor, then this book is a choice find that belongs in your library. Countless people have enjoyed Summer's wisdom and elegant explanations in her weekly Internet radio program on HayHouseRadio.com, and her genuine, honest assessment of manifesting in her blog at www.Flowdreaming.com. Consider this excerpt from "Flowdreaming," in which Summer writes, "We've always known that the Flow is all around us. On some intuitive level, we feel its presence and know when we're moving with life, just as werecognize when we're moving against it. And on rare occasions--though just often enough to shake us up each time it happens--when we look at a sunset or up at the stars, we can even sense that we're part of the Flow; that is, made from the stuff. The Flow is both the glue that holds the cosmos together and the cosmos itself. If you have any doubt about this, just think of how often you've used the expression, 'Just go with the flow.' "Every time you've been moved to use that phrase, you've acknowledged, perhaps instinctually, that there is some life force--some peculiar essence-- that we're caught up in and that is flowing forward into the future, and that, if we go with it, will ease our burdens and bring us to a better place. We intuit that this essence is good and pure, and we want to be flowing with it. In other words, when we're going with the Flow, we're saying that we are in fact on the right path... whatever that path may be. What I'm going to show you now is how you can start aligning yourself with this majesty, and in so doing, discover the explosive creative, manifestational power that is the Flow."
