Sijobang: Sung Narrative Poetry of West Sumatra

Sijobang: Sung Narrative Poetry of West Sumatra

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Phillips, Nigel, PUBLISHER: Cambridge University Press, Sijobang - the singing of a poetic narrative about the legendary hero Anggun Nan Tungga - is a form of popular entertainment in the area around Payakumbuh, in the highlands of West Sumatra. Although the story exists as a written text, it is best known locally as drama and sung narrative, and it is its character as an oral performance that forms the subject of this book. Nigel Phillips begins by setting sijobang in its cultural and literary context, and then goes on to describe the social background and training of the paid storytellers who perform the narrative. He presents a summary of the story, and discusses its transient, fragmentary and unstandardized form. Transcriptions and translations of two recorded performances follow, leading into a description of sijobang's main linguistic and literary features. Finally, Dr Phillips examines in some detail the extent to which performances vary from one occasion to another, and what connection this may have with the storyteller's degree of experience.

In Search of the Split Subject: Psychoanalysis,

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Mycak, Sonia, PUBLISHER: ECW Press, Examining a striking and recurrent aspect of her work--the divided self--this study focuses on the work of Margaret Atwood, offering detailed readings of six of her novels. Through a critical method that borrows freely from both psychoanalytic and phenomenological theorists, chapters on each novel place distinct emphasis on the concepts of each theory, covering such complex topics as secularization, oedipal relations and connections with the maternal, aggressive relativity, the Imaginary, the symbolic, mimesis, space and the dynamics of location, signification, and enunciative positioning. The result is an examination of the ways in which the identity of each protagonist is dislocated, alienated, splintered, and split according to the divisions that mark the subject, and new interpretations of each novel that take into account its characterization, narrative development, thematic content, and setting. An appendix serves to show how Atwood's remaining two novels could be best accounted for by other approaches, making the book a complete account of Atwood's novels to date.

Therence McCarthy re-exasmines the sequence of the tales, and three further ong>essaysong> look at the scribal and textual tradition of Malory's work, in particular the relationship between the Winchester MS, Caxton's printed version, and the history of the MS. Now the Wolf Has Come: The Creek Nation in the Civil War

Now the Wolf Has Come: The Creek Nation in the Civil War

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: White, Christine Schultz / White, Benton R., PUBLISHER: Texas A&M University Press, In the winter of , nine thousand Native Americans in Indian Territory took a chance. Drawing on little else but wits, raw courage, and unshakable faith in the old gods, and their aging leader, Opothleyahola, they made a desperate escape from Confederate troops that were closing in. Seeking to reach the protection of federal forces in Kansas, their dramatic journey, recounted here from a unique Creek/Muskogee perspective, was filled with hazards; their destination, with disillusion and despair. The fleeing tribes suffered on the trek from blizzards, disease, and starvation. Constant harassment and desperate pitched battles with rival bands of the Creek Nation led by the Confederate-allied McIntosh family, adjoining Cherokees under Colonel Stand Waitie, and Texan Confederate sympathizers whittled away the number of survivors. When they finally straggled into Kansas, two thousand were dead or missing. Even then, their trials were not over: Federal "protection" proved to be hollow and harsh. Along with many others, Old Opothleyahola himself died in one of the bleak Federal camps. The complexity of the relationship between Opothleyahola and McIntosh--and the Native American strategies they represented--the passion of the Civil War, and the drama of battles and pursuits fill the pages of this story of an earlier day's refugee plight. Told from the Native American view of the events, never before written, this narrative account relies heavily on Creek oral tradition. Personal interviews with members of the Muskogee Nation have been supplemented with academic research in state, federal, and university archives and in the records of the Museum of the Muskogee Nation in Okmulgee, Oklahoma. Not only students of Native American history but also those interested in the Civil War will find this volume invaluable reading.

Reason in the Age of Science

Reason in the Age of Science

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Gadamer, Hans-Georg / Lawrence, Frederick G., PUBLISHER: MIT Press (MA), The ong>essaysong> in this book deal broadly with the question of what form reasoning about life and society can take in a culture permeated by scientific and technical modes of thought. They attempt to identify certain very basic types of questions that seem to escape scientific resolution and call for, in Gadamer's view, philosophical reflection of a hermeneutic sort. In effect, Gadamer argues for the continued practical relevance of Socratic-Platonic modes of thought in respect to contemporary issues. As part of this argument, he advances his own views on the interplay of science, technology, and social policy. These ong>essaysong>, which are not available in any existing translation or collection of Gadamer's work, are remarkably up-to-date with respect to the present state of his thinking, and they address issues that are particularly critical to social theory and philosophy. Perhaps more than anyone else, Hans-Georg Gadamer, who is Professor Emeritus at the University of Heidelberg and Distinguished Visiting Professor at Boston College, is the doyen of German Philosophy. His previously translated works have been widely and enthusiastically received in this country. He is recognized as the chief theorist of hermeneutics, a strong and growing movement here in a number of disciplines, from theology and literary criticism to philosophy and social theory. A book in the series Studies in Contemporary German Social Thought.

Williams / Williams, PUBLISHER: Duke University Press, Burdened with a heritage of both Spanish and British colonization and imperialism, Guyana is today caught between its colonial past, its efforts to achieve the consciousness of nationhood, and the need of its diverse subgroups to maintain their own identity. "Stains on My Name, War in My Veins" chronicles the complex struggles of the citizens of Guyana to form a unified national culture against the pulls of ethnic, religious, and class identities. Drawing on oral histories and a close study of daily life in rural Guyana, Brackette E. Williams examines how and why individuals and groups in their quest for recognition as a "nation" reproduce ethnic chauvinism, racial stereotyping, and religious bigotry. By placing her ethnographic study in a broader historical context, the author develops a theoretical understanding of the relations among various dimensions of personal identity in the process of nation building.
