Horseracing and the British

Horseracing and the British

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Huggins, Mike, PUBLISHER: Manchester University Press, From the prize-winning author of "Flat Racing and British Society ," this is the first book to provide a detailed consideration of the history of racing in British culture and society and to explore the cultural world of racing during the inter-war years. It breaks new ground by showing how racing's pleasures were enjoyed even by the supposedly respectable middle classes, and gave some working-class groups hope and consolation during economically difficult times. Regular attendance and increased spending on betting were found across class and generation, and women too were keen participants. Enjoyed by the Royal Family and controlled by the Jockey Club and National Hunt Committee, racing's visible emphasis on rank and status helped defend hierarchy and gentlemanly amateurism, and provided support for more conservative British attitudes. The mass media provided a cumulative cultural validation of racing, helping define national and regional identity, and encouraging the affluent consumption of sporting experience and frank enjoyment of betting.

The History of Mary Prince (Penguin Classics)

The History of Mary Prince (Penguin Classics)

Paperback - February by Mary Prince (Author),? Sara Salih (Editor) The History of Mary Prince () was the first narrative of a black woman to be published in Britain. It describes Prince's sufferings as a slave in Bermuda, Turks Island and Antigua, and her eventual arrival in London with her brutal owner Mr Wood in . Prince escaped from him and sought assistance from the Anti-Slavery Society, where she dictated her remarkable story to Susanna Strickland (later Moodie). A moving and graphic document, The History drew attention to the continuation of slavery in the Caribbean, despite an Act of Parliament officially ending the slave trade. It inspired two libel actions and ran into three editions in the year of its publication. This powerful rallying cry for emancipation remains an extraordinary testament to Prince's ill-treatment, suffering and survival. Costo 5,00 € + spese di spedizione

Struggle for Hegemony in India : The Colonial State,

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Joshi, Shashi, PUBLISHER: Sage Publications (CA), Struggle for Hegemony in India describes the role of the Communist Party of India during the freedom struggle () and constructs the experience of its interaction with others as well as with social and political reality. By combining the perspectives of "history from below" with "history from above," this study sharpens the reader's understanding of historical events and processes. Moreover, the author places macro-structures such as the colonial state, political parties, trade unions, and mobilizations of workers and peasants in a context of interaction and interdependence. Students of history, sociology, and political science will find this important book essential reading. "Shashi Joshi displays considerable grasp of detail without losing sight of the broad contours of her story, which is related with fluent authority. She is clearly well-grounded in Marxist literature and has placed her thesis of Communist failure within the matrix of Marxist concepts." --Asian Affairs

Furs and Frontiers in the Far North: The Contest Among

Furs and Frontiers in the Far North: The Contest Among

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Bockstoce, John R. / Fernandez-Armesto, Felipe, PUBLISHER: Yale University Press, This comprehensive history of the native and maritime fur trade in Alaska during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries is without precedent. The Bering Strait formed the nexus of the circumpolar fur trade in which Russians, British, Americans, and members of fifty native nations competed and cooperated. The desire to dominate the fur trade fed the European expansion into the most remote regions of Asia and America and was an agent of massive change in these regions. Award-winning author John R. Bockstoce fills a major gap in the historiography of the area in covering the scientific, commercial, and foreign-relations implications of the northern fur trade. In addition, the book provides rare insight into the relationship between the Western powers and the Native Americans who provided them with fur, ivory, and whalebone in exchange for manufactured goods, tobacco, tea, alcohol, and hundreds of other things. But this is also the story of the enterprising individuals who energized the Alaskan fur trade and, in doing so, forever altered the region's history.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Firmage, Edwin Brown / Mangrum, R. Collin / Mangrum, Richard Collin, PUBLISHER: University of Illinois Press, The inability of American society to tolerate the peculiar institutions embraced by Mormons was one of the major events in the religious history of nineteenth-century America. Zion in the Courts explores one aspect of this collision between the Mormons and the mainstream: the Mormons' efforts to establish their own court system -- one appropriate to the distinctive political, social, and economic practices they envisioned as Zion -- and the pressures applied by the federal legal system to bring them to heel. This first paperback edition includes two new introductory pieces in which the authors discuss the Mormon emphasis on settling disputes outside the court, a practice that foreshadows current trends toward arbitration and mediation.

Re-Presenting the Good Society

Re-Presenting the Good Society

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Cooke, Maeve, PUBLISHER: MIT Press (MA), Contemporary critical social theories face the question of how to justify the ideas of the good society that guide their critical analyses. Traditionally, these more or less determinate ideas of the good society were held to be independent of their specific sociocultural context and historical epoch. Today, such a concept of context-transcending validity is not easy to defend; the "linguistic turn" of Western philosophy signals the widespread acceptance of the view that ideas of knowledge and validity are always mediated linguistically and that language is conditioned by history and context. In "Re-Presenting the Good Society," Maeve Cooke addresses the justificatory dilemma facing critical social theories: how to maintain an idea of context-transcending validity without violating anti-authoritarian impulses. In doing so she not only clarifies the issues and positions taken by other theorists--including Richard Rorty, Jurgen Habermas, Axel Honneth, and Judith Butler--but also offers her own original and thought-provoking analysis of context-transcending validity. Because the tension between an anti-authoritarian impulse and a guiding idea of context-transcending validity is today an integral part of critical social theory, Cooke argues that it should be negotiated rather than eliminated. Her proposal for a concept of context-transcending validity has as its central claim that we should conceive of the good society as "re-presented" in particular constitutively inadequate representations of it. These re-presentations are, Cooke argues provocatively, regulative ideas that have an imaginary, fictive character.

The Refiner's Fire: The Making of Mormon Cosmology,

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Brooke, John L., PUBLISHER: Cambridge University Press, Mormon religious belief has long been a mystery to outsiders, either dismissed as anomalous to the American religious tradition or extolled as the most genuine creation of the American imagination. The Refiner's Fire presents a new and comprehensive understanding of the roots of Mormon religion, whose theology promises the faithful that they will become "gods" through the restoration of ancient mysteries and regain the divine powers of Adam lost in the fall from Paradise. Professor Brooke contends that the origins of Mormonism lie in the fusion of radical religion with occult ideas, and organizes his book around the two problems of demonstrating the survival of these ideas into the nineteenth century and explaining how they were manifested in Mormon doctrine. In the concluding chapter, the author provides an outline of how Mormonism since the s gradually moved toward traditional Protestant Christianity. As well as religion, the book explores magic, witchcraft, alchemy, Freemasonry, counterfeiting, and state-formation. John L. Brooke is professor of history at Tufts University and the acclaimed author of The Heart of the Commonwealth: Society and Political Culture in Worcester County, Massachusetts, (CUP, ), which has won, among other prizes, the Organization of American Historians' Merle Curti Award for Intellectual History and the National Historical Society Book Prize for American History.

Social Linguistics and Literacies: Ideology in Discourses

Social Linguistics and Literacies: Ideology in Discourses

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Gee, James Paul, PUBLISHER: Taylor & Francis Group, This fully-updated new edition engages with topics such as orality and literacy, the history of literacy, the uses and abuses of literacy in that history, the analysis of language as cultural communication, and social theories of mind and meaning, among many other topics. It represents the most current statement of a widely discussed and used theory about how language functions in society, a theory initially developed in the first edition of the book, and developed in this new edition in tandem with analytic techniques for the study of language and literacy in context, with special reference to cross-cultural issues in communities and schools. Built around a large number of specific examples, this new edition reflects current debates across the world about education and educational reform, the nature of language and communication, and the role of sociocultural diversity in schools and society. One of the core goals of this book, from its first edition on, has been to develop a new and more widely applicable vision of applied linguistics. It will be of interest to researchers, lecturers and students in education, linguistics, or any field that deals with language, especially in social or cultural terms.

Peasants and Imperial Rule: Agriculture and Agrarian Society

Peasants and Imperial Rule: Agriculture and Agrarian Society

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Charlesworth, Neil, PUBLISHER: Cambridge University Press, This book is a detailed historical study of agriculture and agrarian society in a major province of British India, the Bombay presidency. Its objective is to examine the impact of British rule on the Indian peasantry, and the changes it brought. Among the specific issues discussed by the author are the development of the British land revenue system, the pattern of expansion in commercial agriculture and the consequences in terms of ownership and organisation of land and agrarian social structure. Dr Charlesworth goes on to look at the role of government policy, the nature of peasant protest movements and the effects of the interwar depression. He concludes that significant long-term economic and social change did occur but that the highly 'differential' pattern to commercialisation prevented any structural transformation in the peasant economy and society.

Seeing Further: 350 Years of the Royal Society and

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Bryson, Bill, PUBLISHER: Doubleday Canada, From the Royal Society, a peerless collection of all-new science writing Bill Bryson, who explored all -- or at least a great deal of -- current scientific knowledge in A Short History of Nearly Everything, now turns his attention to the history of that knowledge. As editor of Seeing Further, he has rounded up an extraordinary roster of scientists who write and writers who know science in order to celebrate 350 years of the Royal Society, Britain's scientific national academy. The result is an encyclopedic survey of the history, philosophy and current state of science, written in an accessible and inspiring style by some of today's most important writers. The contributors include Margaret Atwood, Steve Jones, Richard Dawkins, James Gleick, Richard Holmes, and Neal Stephenson, among many others, on subjects ranging from metaphysics to nuclear physics, from the threatened endtimes of flu and climate change to our evolving ideas about the nature of time itself, from the hidden mathematics that rule the universe to the cosmological principle that guides "Star Trek." The collection begins with a brilliant introduction from Bryson himself, who says: "It is impossible to list all the ways that the Royal Society has influenced the world, but you can get some idea by typing in 'Royal Society' as a word search in the electronic version of the "Dictionary of National Biography." That produces 218 pages of results -- entries, nearly as many as for the Church of England (at ) and considerably more than for the House of Commons () or House of Lords ()." As this book shows, the Royal Society not only produces the best scientists and science, it also produces and inspires the very best science writing.
