Into the Desert

With the coming of railroads, the nature of the Columbia as a free-flowing river changes as man attempts to control it by jetties at its tumultuous bar, by locks and canals at the cascades and Celilo Falls, and by dams providing power, navigation, irrigation, and flood control. These changes are not always welcomed by the Warren family, but because this is the watershed in which they have chosen to live, they must make the best of it. The climax of the novel, the massive flood of -- whose destructive crest cannot be controlled by the river's three existing dams -- gives the dam-builders the final argument they need to begin the era of engineering that eventually will bring the second largest watershed in the United States under man's control. By the time the process is completed fifty years later, the once free-flowing river will be impeded by 161 dams.

The term levee as used herein is defined as an embankment whose primary purpose is to furnish flood protection from seasonal high water and which is therefore subject to water loading for periods of only a few days or weeks a year. Embankments that are subject to water loading for prolonged periods (longer than normal flood protection requirements) or permanently should be designed in accordance with earth dam criteria rather than the levee criteria given herein. Even though levees are similar to small earth dams they differ from earth dams in the following important respects: (a) a levee embankment may become saturated for only a short period of time beyond the limit of capillary saturation, (b) levee alignment is dictated primarily by flood protection requirements, which often results in construction on poor foundations, and (c) borrow is generally obtained from shallow pits or from channels excavated adjacent to the levee, which produce fill material that is often heterogeneous and far from ideal. Selection of the levee section is often based on the properties of the poorest material that must be used.

As the bus trundled over bumpy dirt roads, a red moon rising in the black sky, I was struck by an almost overwhelming sense of the strange. That night, I tried to trace the events that conspired to propel the trajectory of my life in that direction. I found myself thinking, "How did I get here?" Over time, the question ceased to be one of fact, and instead became the driving force of a fiction. As I began to write about the Yangtze,another, smaller river took shape in my mind: a river in Alabama that feeds into the Gulf. On the banks of this hot, winding river, two girls fall in love. One of them, a Chinese-American, is murdered, and there is the beginning of our story. I've always been a little obsessed with the concept of obsession, especially as it pertains to love. And I'm mystified by the way childhood friendships so often rival in intensity and depth any relationships we have as adults. Dream of the Blue Room is a novel about obsession, about the ways we are haunted by people dead and gone. And it is about the places to which we are bound, not merely by birth, but by other, messier means. Michelle Richmond is an amazing author who has written a gentle Southern novel, which just happens to be set on a river in China--no small feat. She's a wonderful storyteller, both on the printed page and while trading anecdotes in a bar on a rainy afternoon.--P.W.
