ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Dunne, Gerald T., PUBLISHER: University of Missouri Press, In "The Missouri Supreme Court, " distinguished legal historian Gerald T. Dunne captures the people and personalities, conflicts and controversies of Missouri's rich legal history. Using a lively anecdotal approach to examine the key cases and political disputes, as well as the strong-minded incumbents who have served on the court's bench, he places Missouri's judicial system in the context of the overall political and legal developments in the United States as a whole. Dunne sets the scene by presenting Missouri before it became a state, tracing the evolution of Indian, Spanish, and French legal influences until the final adoption of a legal system based on the English common law. Then, through a compelling narrative, he recounts not only the factual background of major cases but also interesting biographical information about the disputants. Dunne reveals the fascinating history of the Missouri Supreme Court from the basic violation of human rights in the Dred Scott case up through the ethical questions addressed in the case of Nancy Cruzan's right to die. These are only two of the important decisions of the United States Supreme Court that had their origins in Missouri and are discussed here. These cases are landmarks not only because of what the higher courts said about them, but because of their intrinsic historical interest. Dunne concludes with portraits of key judges who served on the supreme court. He tells how diminutive Abiel Leonard killed a man in a duel on his way to the Missouri Supreme Court bench. And we learn of "The Sage of Sedalia," Henry Lamm, if not the greatest, certainly the most quotable member of the court who left behind a sparkling sequence of aphorisms. By incorporating such colorful details and enlivening his subject with gusto, charm, and humor, Dunne personalizes the Missouri Supreme Court beyond its institutional function. "The Missouri Supreme Court" is an enduring work that reflects the human condition, in both the law and the society it serves, in all its weakness and strength, error and achievement, and occasional glory.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Paarlberg, Robert L., PUBLISHER: Brookings Institution Press, What's good for the United States may well turn out to be good for international economic policy coordination. In this post-cold war era marked by pressing domestic social concerns and fiscal deficits, Robert L. Paarlberg says that the U.S. government should take an inward-first approach to global economic policy. Unless the domestic front is secured, he believes that international initiatives cannot succeed for lack of domestic support. It's a contrary view. The outward-first approach has dominated U.S. policy in the post-war and cold war eras. Paarlberg holds that the period was exceptional in the longer history of the nation and its relations with other nations. In the future, this sort of policymaking will be increasingly difficult to sustain. The U.S. economy is not as strong as it once was in relation to other economies. The security imperatives of the cold war have largely evaporated. And Congress is certainly no longer deferential to the executive branch. Under these new circumstances, outward-first international conferences, international negotiations, and international agreements may not work as a starting point for international economic cooperation. In this highly readable book, part of the Brookings Integrating National Economies Series, Paarlberg offers an in-dept examination of the merits of an inward-first approach to economic policy leadership. He contends that this approach should not be equated with protectionism, because it refers only to policy sequence, not to content. To the extent that inward-first is unilateral, he maintains that unilateral action at home can pave the way for cooperative actions abroad. He tests his argument with more detailed studies in severaldifferent policy arenasincluding international fiscal policy coordination and discipline, agricultural policy reform, and global environmental policy. Leadership Abroad Begins at Home presents an instructive survey of American political and policymaking institutions, and of America's changing position in the world. A volume of Brookings' Integrating National Economies Series

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Pais, Abraham, PUBLISHER: Oxford University Press, USA, Abraham Pais's Subtle Is the Lord was a publishing phenomenon: a mathematically sophisticated exposition of the science and the life of Albert Einstein that reached a huge audience and won an American Book Award. Reviewers hailed the book as "a monument to sound scholarship and graceful style" (The New York Times Book Review), "an extraordinary biography of an extraordinary man" (Christian Science Monitor), and "a fine book" (Scientific American). In this groundbreaking new volume, Pais undertakes a history of the physics of matter and of physical forces since the discovery of x-rays. The book attempts to relate not only what has happened over the last hundred years but why it happened the way it did, what it was like for those scientists involved, and how what at the time may have seemed a series of bizarre or unrelated events, now with hindsight emerges as a logical sequence of events. Pais, a noted physicist, was personally involved in many of the developments he describes, and thus Inward Bound, like his earlier book, is filled with unique insights into the world of big and small physics. Between and , the period he covers, the smallest distances explored have shrunk a hundred millionfold, Pais notes. Along this incompletely traveled "road inward," scientists have established markers that later generations will rank among the principal monuments of the twentieth century. In alternating technical and nontechnical sections, this magisterial survey richly conveys what has been discovered about the constituents of matter, the laws to which they are subject, and the forces that act on them. But the advances have certainly not come smoothly. The book shows that these have been times of progress and stagnation, of order and chaos, of clarity and confusion, of belief and incredulity, of the conventional and the bizarre; also of revolutionaries and conservatives, of science by individuals and by consortia, of little gadgets and big machines, and of modest funds and big money. About the Author: Abraham Pais is Detlev W. Bronk Professor of Physics at the Rockefeller University. The author of the prizewinning biography of Einstein now undertakes a history of modern physics
