Travelling Artists in Cyprus

Travelling Artists in Cyprus

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Severis, Rita C., PUBLISHER: Philip Wilson Publishers, This fascinating survey of Cyprus during the eighteenth, nineteenth and the first half of the twentieth centuries offers a unique view of a country as seen through the eyes of artists and travellers. It is based on over 350 works which are for the first time presented, pertaining to two periods of the history of Cyprus, those of Ottoman and British rule. A panorama of topography, monuments and ethnography is unfolded through the paintings and drawings of both amateur and professional artists. The political background and nationality of the artists and the influences of Imperialism, Orientalism and Colonialism are explored, and the book considers how attitudes changed during the period under discussion. The book also looks at the perception of the island, once a French, Ottoman and British colony, in relation to those of neighbouring countries such as Greece and Malta.

Euroscepticism in Southern Europe: A Diachronic Perspective

Euroscepticism in Southern Europe: A Diachronic Perspective

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Susannah, Verney / Verney, Susannah, PUBLISHER: Routledge, The referenda in France and the Netherlands underlined the growing legitimacy problems of the European Union, by signaling serious public dissatisfaction with the current direction of European integration. In the aftermath of the constitutional debacle, an examination of the origins, evolution and prospects of opposition to the European integration project appears particularly timely. As a laboratory for the study of attitudes towards European integration, Southern Europe offers a particularly rich range of case studies, including a founder member (Italy), three 'second generation' states (Greece, Spain and Portugal), two recent entrants (Cyprus and Malta) and a negotiating candidate (Turkey). In addition, all seven states have been closely linked to the integration project since the era of the European Community, with four members of this group being the first states to sign Association Agreements with the European Community in the s and s. Southern Europe also covers the spectrum in terms of size, including large, medium and small states. The volume traces the evolution of euroscepticism in each South European country, assessing its significance and highlighting both continuity and change. Covering both eliteparty and popular euroscepticism, the volume illuminates the factors which have shaped opposition to integration and the form and content which it has assumed in each country. This book was published as a special issue of South European Society & Politics.

Silent Urns: Romanticism, Hellenism, Modernity

Silent Urns: Romanticism, Hellenism, Modernity

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Ferris, David, PUBLISHER: Stanford University Press, The study of Greece as an icon of culture appears to be as old as Greece itself, as if, like Pallas Athene springing from the head of Zeus, its cultural significance had attained full maturity at birth. In "Silent Urns, " the author reveals how Greece attained such significance as the result of the attempt to reconcile individuality, freedom, history, and modernity in eighteenth-century aesthetics. He argues that Winckelmann's "History of Ancient Art" () produced this reconciliation by developing a concept of culture that effectively defined our modern understanding of the term, as well as our sense of what it is to be modern. From this reconciliation, Greece emerges as the form in which culture is first conceptualized as a historically and politically defined category. In readings of works by Keats, Schelling, Aeschylus, Shelley, and Holderlin, the author studies different aspects of Winckelmann's conceptualization of culture as it passes into Romantic Hellenism. Through these readings--in which individuality, identity, freedom, the tragic, and memory are all discussed--the book demonstrates how Romanticism took issue with the legacy of Greece that emerged in the eighteenth century, and did so in the name of a freedom that our cultural modernity no longer recalls.

Olympia: Warrior Athletes of Ancient Greece

Olympia: Warrior Athletes of Ancient Greece

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Kennett, David, PUBLISHER: Walker & Company, In the eighth century B.C. the city-states of Greece were in a constant state of war, until King Iphitus stopped the bloodshed by reviving an ancient tradition -- an athletic contest to honor the gods. A truce was declared, so the warring groups could come together in peace to compete at the sacred grove at Olympia. Those games would survive for hundreds of years, becoming the inspiration for our modern Olympic Games. The site of Olympia will forever be revered as the birthplace of a great tradition that still unites the world in the spirit of peace and athletic competition. With spectacular illustrations, Olympia revisits those early games -- the holy rituals, the chariot racing and equestrian events, the ancient pentathlon, the wrestling, the boxing -- all the skills of war that readily developed into the challenge of sport. Dyan Blacklock and David Kennett bring to life the sights, sounds and excitement of this age-old, sacred tradition.
