ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Kelby, Scott, PUBLISHER: Peachpit Press, Scott Kelby, the man who changed the "digital darkroom" forever with his groundbreaking, #1 bestselling, award-winning book "The Photoshop Book for Digital Photographers, " now tackles the most important side of digital photography--how to take pro-quality shots using the same tricks today's top digital pros use (and it's easier than you'd think). This entire book is written with a brilliant premise, and here's how Scott describes it: "If you and I were out on a shoot, and you asked me, 'Hey, how do I get this flower to be in focus, but I want the background out of focus?' I wouldn't stand there and give you a lecture about aperture, exposure, and depth of field. In real life, I'd just say, 'Get out your telephoto lens, set your f/stop to f/2.8, focus on the flower, and fire away.' You d say, 'OK, ' and you'd get the shot. That's what this book is all about. A book of you and I shooting, and I answer the questions, give you advice, and share the secrets I've learned just like I would with a friend, without all the technical explanations and without all the techno-photo-speak." This isn't a book of theory-it isn't full of confusing jargon and detailed concepts: this is a book of which button to push, which setting to use, when to use them, and nearly two hundred of the most closely guarded photographic "tricks of the trade" to get you shooting dramatically better-looking, sharper, more colorful, more professional-looking photos with your digital camera every time you press the shutter button. Here's another thing that makes this book different: each page covers just one trick, just one single concept that makes your photography better. Every time you turn the page, you'll learn another pro setting, another pro tool, another pro trick to transform your work from snapshots into gallery prints. There's never been a book like it, and if you're tired of taking shots that look "OK," and if you're tired of looking in photography magazines and thinking, "Why don't my shots look like that?" then this is the book for you. ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: James, Lebron / Bissinger, Buzz, PUBLISHER: Penguin Press, From the ultimate team- basketball superstar LeBron James and Buzz Bissinger, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of "Friday Night Lights" and "Three Nights in August"-a poignant, thrilling tale of the power of teamwork to transform young lives, including James's own. The Shooting Stars were a bunch of kids-LeBron James and his best friends-from Akron, Ohio, who first met on a youth basketball team of the same name when they were ten and eleven years old. United by their love of the game and their yearning for companionship, they quickly forged a bond that would carry them through thick and thin (a lot of thin) and, at last, to a national championship in their senior year of high school. They were a motley group who faced challenges all too typical of inner-city America. LeBron grew up without a father and had moved with his mother more than a dozen times by the age of ten. Willie McGee, the quiet one, had left both his parents behind in Chicago to be raised by his older brother in Akron. Dru Joyce was outspoken, and his dad was ever present; he would end up coaching all five of the boys in high school. Sian Cotton, who also played football, was the happy-go-lucky enforcer, while Romeo Travis was unhappy, bitter, even surly, until he finally opened himself up to the bond his teammates offered him. In the summer after seventh grade, the Shooting Stars tasted glory when they qualified for a national championship tournament in Memphis. But they lost their focus and had to go home early. They promised one another they would stay together and do whatever it took to win a national title. They had no idea how hard it would be to pursue that promise. In the years that followed, they would endure jealousy, hostility, exploitation, resentment from the black community (because they went to a "white" high school), and the consequences of their own overconfidence. Not least, they would all have to wrestle with LeBron's outsize success, which brought too much attention and even a whiff of scandal their way. But together these five boys became men, and together they claimed the prize they had fought for all those years-a national championship.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Langer, Paul / Zasloff, Joseph, PUBLISHER: Harvard University Press, Laos is a major arena of international confrontation despite the Geneva Accords of . Yet there is a dearth of published material on Laos, and the crucial issue of North Vietnam's role in that country has hardly been examined. This important study illuminates the North Vietnamese-Pathet Lao partnership, an understanding of which is so critical to the search for peace in Indochina. The authors reconstruct dispassionately the politics of the Lao revolution since its beginning after the Second World War. Focusing on North Vietnam's past and present role in Laos they trace the origins, evolution, organization, and leadership of the Pathet Lao organization. They demonstrate that the war in Laos is really three wars--Vietnamese traditional attempts to assert hegemony over regions of Laos important to North Vietnam's security; an extension of the struggle in South Vietnam; and a civil war between Lao Communists and anti-Communists. They show that Hanoi's active role springs from its interest in protecting its borders, gaining access to South Vietnam, and establishing a politically congenial regime in Laos. They conclude that the Viet Minh were a key factor in the genesis of the Pathet Lao and that the Vietnamese have continued to provide guidance and vital assistance to the revolutionary organization which now controls a significant portion of the country. On the other hand, the authors point out that the Pathet Lao share common interests with the North Vietnamese Communists and that, from their own perspective, they have not compromised their legitimacy as a nationalist movement by their heavy dependence on Hanoi. Langer and Zasloff, experienced analysts of Southeast Asian affairs, conducted extensive field research in Laos. They interviewed a wide variety of persons with intimate knowledge of the Lao Communist movement, including former Pathet Lao and North Vietnamese military and civilian personnel. They talked with Lao, in and out of the Government, who had gone to school with their future Lao or Vietnamese adversaries, were linked to them by family ties, had been in the same political camp, or had confronted them at the conference table. They interviewed specialists on Laos and Vietnam, among them scholars, journalists, officials of international agencies, and foreign government officials. They examined a range of internal Pathet Lao and North Vietnamese documents diaries, letters, party directives, and training guides, as well as textbooks, newspapers, propaganda leaflets, and general literature. They studied Pathet Lao, Vietnamese, Thai, Cambodian, Chinese, and Soviet radio broadcasts and consulted printed materials about Laos from Hanoi, Peking, and Moscow.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: De Volder, Jan / Steffen, John / Allen, John L., PUBLISHER: Ignatius Press, Father Damien, famous for his missionary work with exiled lepers on the Hawaiian island of Molokai, is finally Saint Damien. His sanctity took 120 years to become officially recognized, but between his death in and his canonization in --amid creeping secularization and suspicion of the missionary spirit he so much embodied--Fr. Damien De Veuster never faded from the world's memory. What kept him there? What keeps him there now? To find an answer, Belgian historian and journalist Jan De Volder sifted through Father Damien's personal correspondence as well as the Vatican archives. With careful and even-handed expertise, De Volder follows Father Damien's transformation from the stout, somewhat haughty missionary of his youth, bounding from Europe to Hawaii and straight into seemingly tireless priestly work, to the humble and loving shepherd of souls who eventually succumbed to the same disease that ravaged his flock. De Volder finds that--as spiritual father, caretaker, teacher, and advocate--Father Damien accomplished many heroic feats for these poor outcasts. Yet the greatest gift he gave them was their transformation from a disordered, lawless throng exiled in desperate anarchy into a living community built on Jesus Christ, a community in which they learned to care for one another. Every generation seems to have its own image of this world-famous priest. Already during his life on Molokai and at his death in , many considered him a holy man. Even today, in the highly secularized Western world, he is widely admired. In his native Belgium honored him with the title "the greatest Belgian" in polling conducted by their public broadcasting service. Statues honor his memory in the National Statuary Hall of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., and at the entrance to the Hawaiian State Capitol in Honolulu. In , in the presence of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, Pope John Paul II beatified him in Brussels, Belgium; and in Pope Benedict XVI canonized him in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. Today Father Damien is the unofficial patron of outcasts and those afflicted with HIV/AIDS. "Illustrated with many photos." De Volder contends that the common thread running through the saint's life, the spirit of Father Damien that so speaks to the world, is at once uniquely Christian, fully human, and as important today as ever before.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Bate, W. Jackson / Bate, Walter Jackson, PUBLISHER: Belknap Press, The life of Keats provides a unique opportunity for the study of literary greatness and of what permits or encourages its development. Its interest is deeply human and moral, in the most capacious sense of the words. In this authoritative biography--the first full-length life of Keats in almost forty years--the man and the poet are portrayed with rare insight and sympathy. In spite of a scarcity of factual data for his early years, the materials for Keats's life are nevertheless unusually full. Since most of his early poetry has survived, his artistic development can be observed more closely than is possible with most writers; and there are times during the period of his greatest creativity when his personal as well as his artistic life can be followed week by week. The development of Keats's poetic craftsmanship proceeds simultaneously with the steady growth of qualities of mind and character. Mr. Bate has been concerned to show the organic relationship between the poet's art and his larger, more broadly humane development. Keats's great personal appeal--his spontaneity, vigor, playfulness, and affection--are movingly recreated; at the same time, his valiant attempt to solve the problem faced by all modern poets when they attempt to achieve originality and amplitude in the presence of their great artistic heritage is perceptively presented. In discussing this matter, Mr. Bate says, "The pressure of this anxiety and the variety of reactions to it constitute one of the great unexplored factors in the history of the arts since . And in no major poet, near the beginning of the modern era, is this problem met more directly than it is in Keats. The way in which Keats wassomehow able, after the age of twenty-two, to confront this dilemma, and to transcend it, has fascinated every major poet who has used the English language since Keats's death and also every major critic since the Victorian era." Mr. Bate has availed himself of all new biographical materials, published and unpublished, and has used them selectively and without ostentation, concentrating on the things that were meaningful to Keats. Similarly, his discussions of the poetry are not buried beneath the controversies of previous critics. He approaches the poems freshly and directly, showing their relation to Keats's experience and emotions, to premises and values already explored in the biographical narrative. The result is a book of many dimensions, not a restricted critical or biographical study but a fully integrated whole.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Gibson, Mitchell E., PUBLISHER: Reality Press, "My name is Mitchell." Thus begins, Your Immortal Body of Light, a fascinating and true story that takes Mitchell E. Gibson, M.D. out of his ordinary consciousness and into the inner realms of his being. Dr. Gibson was Chief Resident in Psychiatry at a large inner city medical center when he began his journey, expanding his consciousness using meditation. On his quest, he actually encounters an ancient 'god of healing' known as Djehuti (pronounced Dee-jan-tee), or Thoth. Being a psychiatrist, Gibson more than wavered before accepting that he was indeed speaking with an actual entity but the experience persisted and eventually Djehuti revealed profound information to Gibson, about the formation of the soul and the causes of mental illness. Your Immortal Body of Light is a credible and highly readable adventure into the land of magic and miracles invoked by meditation. Not since the release of Tranceformers: Shamans of the 21st Century by John Jay Harper has there been such a heartfelt sharing of what it means to be contacted by a "deceased" colleague and how to apply those insights to understanding the physics and metaphysics of creation. In this book the author travels beyond the illusive veil of "reality" to bridge the gap between cultures and centuries. Dr. Gibson reveals how Words of Power invoke transformation in body-mind-spirit as scholar Jeremy Naydler declared in Temple of the Cosmos: The Ancient Egyptian Experience of the Sacred. "It is no coincidence that Thoth, the Lord of Speech, who in the Beginning uttered the primordial sounds that thickened into tangible substances and thus brought the world into existence, was also the originator of writing." That is, your world will never be the same once you put these writings into practice to create a life that is a dream come true too. Both fascinating and chilling this is not your everyday spiritual awakening story. Lee Levinson, Emmy Winning Television Producer "Your Immortal Body of Light" is alternatively a sensitive and compelling portrait of one man's spiritual and emotional journey into the unknown. The author's recounting of his personal experiences are reflected in outstanding visual sequences and dramatic character interaction that make this true story resonate with an air of authenticity that will impact audiences everywhere. Five Stars Highly Recommended... Kirkus Reviews "Nourishing soul food for the spiritually inclined."

Intonator Encompassing a heritage of more than 20 years of delivering professional tools to the pro audio industry, TC Electronic proudly presents a high end vocal processing tool. Dedicated to the professional vocal recording engineer, the Intonator is aimed at reducing tedious engineering time spent on doing vocal re-takes. Not only does it provide you with the ultimate solution to vocal pitch correction, but it offers various valuable processing tools as well, including a De-esser, and a special Adaptive LoCut filter designed specifically for vocal processing. Quality Tools For Quality Engineering Tonal integrity is a must when dealing with delicate human vocals. The Intonator preserves the artist's personal touch by allowing vibrato, initial intonation and correction limited to individual notes. Utmost care has been taken in the software development to ensure that all fine adjustments applied to the incoming signal are being processed in a subtle, yet highly effective manner! Transparency Based on TC's world-renowned DARCâ,,¢3 chip technology (incorporating 96kHz internal processing and true 24 bit resolution), the Intonator provides you with an ultra-transparent signal path. It features fully integrated AES/EBU, S/PDIF, Tos-link and ADAT digital I/O's, and is 96kHz, 88.2kHz, 48kHz and 44.1kHz compatible on both digital and analog I/O's. Coherence Apart from the clear advantages of reducing the time spent on doing vocal re-takes, the Intonator also brings back coherence into the performance. Instead of cutting and pasting bits and phrases, with the loss of coherence as an obvious result, you now have a professional tool for processing and correcting your vocals in real-time. Two Signal Setups The Intonator also makes you capable of configuring the signal path in two different ways. In Normal mode the ADIOS (Analog Dual I/O's) configuration enables you to make simultaneous recordings of processed and unprocessed vocals, making comparisons a breeze (see fig. A). Digital signals, from your digital multitrack recorder for instance, can be configured the same way. In Dual mode you have the option of pitch-correcting the signal in one channel while using the dynamics, De-esser and LoCut, on the signal in the other channel (see fig. B). Being On Top You can choose to correct a single note simply by using the unique "Do-not-process-anything-but-this-note" function achieved via an internal custom scale feature, or type in your personal scale. A Pitch window allows you to specify when a note will be considered out of tune, whereas the Amount control limits the level of Pitch correction added to the audio. The Audio-to-MIDI conversion allows you to keep track of the incoming pitch history and/or correction history, giving you the advantages of being on top of things throughout the entire recording session. The Intonator features full MIDI automation making time based pitch shifting a simple operation. Use your keyboard for real-time manual pitch correction simply by hitting the notes to be processed. Dithering The use of dithering is very important when interfacing digitally between audio equipment. When resolution is changed from higher to lower, dithering is necessary to minimize distortion. In the Intonator you have the user friendly TPDF Dithering. The Output resolution of the Intonator is 24 bit, when the receiver of the Intonator signal has a lower resolution, Output Dither must be applied to equal the resolution of the receiver. Premium Converters When converting from analog to digital or vice versa, you should always try to use the full dynamic range of your converters. Even though the converters in the Intonator are 24 bit, analog gain may be applied before the AD's and after the DA's to make full use of them. The analog signal-path is balanced and can carry professional levels. Applications With the Intonator, you can establish a completely digital signal-path for vocal editing and correction. When tracking, the unit's fine A to D converters may be utilized to get high quality digital signals directly to Multitrack, ADAT, ProTools etc. Audio-to-MIDI With a simple setup you can monitor and edit your vocals externally. Just track the incoming pitch history to your sequencer, add the necessary correction and play back the pitch correction to the Intonator Keyboard The keyboard gives you instant access to changing the Root note of the current scale or the notes allowed to be corrected. Simultaneously the keyboard also indicates the incoming note, making it possible to recognize the note about to be processed. Display The Display shows you the current Root note and Scale. While processing you can see both the incoming signal and the amount of correction added to the source, creating a visual confirmation of the process taking place. Window, Attack and Amount These three knobs allow you to individualize the processing in detail. The Window knob determines how close to a particular note the source should be in order to be corrected. The Attack knob conducts the response-time before the correction sets in. This will help preserve the artist's personal touch by e.g. allowing vibrato. The Amount knob sets the amount of correction added to the signal. Manual Pitch Use the Manual Pitch control to add pitch correction by hand. The wheel can also be remote controlled by your keyboard modulation wheel or even provide in-sync changes when locked to a sequencer. The De-esser uses a relative threshold technique. This means that the actual threshold is always set according to the average level of the source signal. Consequently, the De-esser always adapts to the incoming signal and maintains the same threshold to the average level regardless of the Input signal. Adaptive Locut The Adaptive LoCut is a pitch controlled LoCut Filter. Instead of cutting off frequencies under a predetermined value, the Adaptive LoCut filter controls the cut off frequencies dynamically in accordance with the incoming signal. ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Cleveland, William L., PUBLISHER: Westview Press, This comprehensive work provides a penetrating analysis of modern Middle Eastern history, from the Ottoman and Egyptian reforms, through the challenge of Western imperialism, to the Iranian Revolution and the recent Gulf War. After introducing the reader to the region's history from the origins of Islam in the seventh century, Cleveland focuses on the past two centuries of profound and often dramatic change. While built around a framework of political history, the book also carefully integrates social, cultural, and economic developments into a single, carefully crafted account.Cleveland sets the stage with a superb, concise overview of the long-term, general patterns of Middle Eastern history. The book opens with a portrayal of Islam that stresses an understanding of this great world religion and culture on its own terms and in its specific historical setting. The rich potential of this culture manifested itself in shifting centers of Islamic florescence, culminating in the rise of the Ottoman and Safavid Empires as the central political and social entities of the Middle East in the sixteenth through the eighteenth centuries. The book next examines the crucial developments of the nineteenth century--an era characterized by attempts at the self-transformation of Middle Eastern societies, a process sometimes misleadingly referred to as "modernization" or "Westernization." The resulting disruption of the established order was a wrenching and disorienting experience for the peoples of the region.Defeat in World War I delivered the coup de grace to Ottoman rule and brought in the "mandate system" through which the British and the French sought to impose their overlordship on the Arab world. The interwar years, through to the end of World War II, were characterized by the Arab struggle for independence. This struggle led to the emergence of the major political ideologies of the Arab world--regionalism, pan-Arab nationalism--combined with the enduring appeal of Islamic solidarity. During this same period the two major independent states of the region, Turkey and Iran, embarked on intensive programs of secular reform designed to remake their societies in the image of the West. Several Arab states were able to establish their independence, but this process was greatly complicated by the legacies of European rule, especially the founding of the state of Israel in and the cold war rivalry of the superpowers. Many of the problems faced in the region today are a direct consequence of this historical legacy: the Arab-Israeli conflict, the concentration of oil wealth into the hands of a few, the Iran-Iraq war, the Palestinian problem, the dissolution of Lebanon, Islamic fundamentalism, and the striving for power on the world stage of states such as Syria, Iraq, and Iran."A History of the Modern Middle East" explains the deep historical currents flowing beneath today's headlines, making it essential reading for anyone s

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: E. M. Forster, PUBLISHER: Tebbo, Finally available, a high quality book of the original classic edition of Where Angels Fear to Tread. This is a new and freshly published edition of this culturally important work by E. M. Forster, which is now, at last, again available to you. Enjoy this classic work today. These selected paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside Where Angels Fear to Tread: Gothard tunnel, presaging the future; the view of the Ticino and Lago Maggiore as the train climbed the slopes of Monte Cenere; the view of Lugano, the view of Como-Italy gathering thick around her now-the arrival at her first resting-place, when, after long driving through dark and dirty streets, she should at last behold, amid the roar of trams and the glare of arc lamps, the buttresses of the cathedral of Milan....Harriet, if she had been allowed, would have driven Lilia to an open rupture, and, what was worse, she would have done the same to Philip two years before, when he returned full of passion for Italy, and ridiculing Sawston and its ways....Herriton flew to a registry office, failed; flew to another, failed again; came home, was told by the housemaid that things seemed so unsettled that she had better leave as well; had tea, wrote six letters, was interrupted by cook and housemaid, both weeping, asking her pardon, and imploring to be taken back....As they drew near, Philip saw the heads of people gathering black upon the walls, and he knew well what was happening-how the news was spreading that a stranger was in sight, and the beggars were aroused from their content and bid to adjust their deformities; how the alabaster man was running for his wares, and the Authorized Guide running for his peaked cap and his two cards of recommendation-one from Miss MGee, Maida Vale, the other, less valuable, from an Equerry to the Queen of Peru; how some one else was running to tell the landlady of the Stella dItalia to put on her pearl necklace and brown boots and empty the slops from the spare bedroom; and how the landlady was running to tell Lilia and her boy that their fate was at hand....Afterwards, in the church, I prayed for us all; not for anything new, but that we might just be as we were-he with the child he loved, you and I and Harriet safe out of the place-and that I might never see him or speak to him again.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: GALE, KATE, Davio, Kelly, PUBLISHER: Red Hen Press, "The Los Angeles Review" started off with a small group of editors in Los Angeles and work mostly by L.A. writers. We've expanded through the years and now the editors are spread throughout California and the Northwest (plus one in Michigan). What unifies the journal is a focus on the writing of the Left Coast, on the way that the writing of the West works outside the framework of the traditional and the academic, pushes back against writing that fits into small spaces, writing that was written for a small group of elite intellectuals. Many of these stories look forward and backward at the same time, at what was and what could have been, at what will be and what could change. Writing in the West continues to evolve and move forward over the edge. It is the writing of desire. My definition of the writing of the West comes from my play, "The Moon Landing is a Hoax." We write about: Sky, clouds, water, hiking, boats, machines, wide open spaces, grasses, mountains, caves, racks of antlers, mustard seed growing, wild orchids, waterfalls, fat people, hairy people, ugly people, dipshits, trailer trash people, truck drivers, soldiers, gypsies, Mexicans, nuclear bombs, test sites, Las Vegas, military bases, guys that work on cars, half wits from Kansas, women with no teeth and curlers in their hair in case they go out later and all of us eating the dark that is America. Flynn Berry's "Surfing," the story of a man, as told by his brother, growing to adulthood, becoming addicted to drugs, going through one rehab stint after another, ends like this: "Here is what I want, out of the many, many things I want. I want to go to Berkeley to our old house in . I want to hang out with my brother when he is four, when he is bright and goofy. His hair is blond and he is three feet tall.... Below us is the wide shining bay, with no trace of the fog he loves to watch come in... I will tell him to be brave. That he will be fine. If I think about it closely enough, maybe it is true. Maybe it is happening right now, in one of the universes, in one of the dimensions that I can't see. He tilts his head, voice excited, telling me about a supernova. There, smell the eucalyptus. Try to imagine it better. Nothing--is unattainable." And that is what the work in LAR wants to believe. That we can push ourselves to the edge of the world and reinvent story, language, what is possible.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Flanagan, David, PUBLISHER: O'Reilly Media, JavaScript is a simple programming language from Netscape that can be embedded in your HTML Web pages. It allows you to control the behavior of the Web browser, add dynamically created text to your Web pages, interact with the user through HTML forms ("without CGI scripts), and, in version 3.0 of Netscape Navigator, even control and interact with Java applets and Navigator plugins. JavaScript is not an alternative to Java, but an ideal partner. The two languages have separate but very complementary features. Since JavaScript is a simple language that can be embedded directly into a Web page, without need for compilation, it is accessible to more Web page authors, and may actually have a larger short-term impact on the Web and on Internet computing than Java itself. This book is a definitive guide for JavaScript. The first eight chapters document the core JavaScript language, and the next six describe how JavaScript works on the client-side to interact with the Web browser and with the Web page. These chapters are followed by a"complete reference section that documents every object, property, method, event handler, function, and constructor used by client-side JavaScript. In a separate reference section, you will find the interaction between JavaScript and HTML documented -- mainly aspects of HTML that relate to JavaScript. A forthcoming edition of this book will cover the use of JavaScript on Web servers, as well as the object, properties, and methods of server-side JavaScript. This book documents the version of JavaScript shipped with Navigator , and 2.0.2, and also the much-changed version of JavaScript shipped with beta versions of Navigator 3.0. The 3.0 informationis current as of the 3.0b4 release. JavaScript is also supported in Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0, and this book discusses JavaScript support in Beta 1 of MSIE. A notable feature of these versions of JavaScript is the frustrating number of bugs that still exist. The book contains a long list of known bugs and is careful to document commonly encountered bugs on the reference pages of the JavaScript objects. Why is this book in "Beta"? We printed this book in a "beta" edition because JavaScript is rapidly evolving. Within Netscape, the version of JavaScript that will be in Navigator 3.0 is being called "JavaScript 1.0." This is an implicit admission that JavaScript as implemented in Navigator 2.0 was still a beta version of the language. Despite JavaScript's beta status, a tremendous number of people are using it and need quality documentation for it. At the same time, however, we realize there have been a lot of changes to JavaScript since Navigator 2.0 was released. As this book is being written, Navigator is at the 3.0b4 stage, and we are beginning to hear about the new features that will be available in the 3.0b5 release. It seems, in fact, that JavaScript is changing faster at this point than at any other time in its
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Barber, Paul A., PUBLISHER: Authorhouse, 404pgs-The Great Depression, Dust Bowl, and a Kansas tornado had left the Barber family reeling. Then came WW II and three sons were called to service. Air Corps planes began flying low level missions over the farm, capturing the imagination of yet a younger son, Paul. In this story of motivation, dedication and excellence, Paul Barber follows his dream, becomes an Air Force pilot, commands a flying unit, and with a simple statement, "Another Day in Which to Excel," challenges himself, his crews, and his family to be their very best. You will see the Cuban Missile Crisis from his vantage point; tag along on high altitude air-refueling missions; learn how the U.S. won the peace during the Cold War with the Soviets; feel the stress on him and his flight crews in the Vietnam War; and view near tragedies during critical phases of flight. You will understand his frustration in writing President Nixon's Plan of Withdrawal from Vietnam, as North Vietnam, seeing the discord in America, refuses to negotiate. In the Pentagon's National Military Command Center, you will observe crisis management at the highest level, as his team stands prepared to launch U.S. Nuclear Forces against the Soviet Union, if they attack America. You will witness his preparation of college ROTC students for military service, and finally, his preparation of older Americans for a financially secure retirement. Throughout this inspirational story, the strength of family and power of faith are highlighted. Reviews: "This is a fascinating story with great insights, a story written in ways that will interest people who appreciate our great American heritage, from the wheat fields of Kansas to the world-shaking events in the Pentagon and the White House. Historians, family leaders, church people, military personnel, farmers, financial specialists and others will find this book interesting reading. In it they will find wisdom and motivation for successful living. This book is confirmation of the power generated when an individual uses the combination of faith, family, education, and hard work to reach personal goals and live a productive and satisfying life." Patsy Johnson Hallman, Ph.D., Retiring Dean, College of Education, Stephen F. Austin State Univ., Nacogdoches, TX and author of "I HAD A TEACHER," "LETTERS FROM MISS EDNA," and several biographies of great leaders. "Another Day in Which to Excel is an exciting, interesting, and informative story that will be enjoyed by family, friends, people of faith, and those seeking inspiration and motivation in their lives. Writing by the same principle that has governed his life, Paul Barber's remarkable life story is a testimony of his desire to live in a way that pleases God." ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Richer, Shawna / MacGregor, Roy, PUBLISHER: McClelland & Stewart, A Season with Sidney Crosby and the New NHL. A gripping account of the rookie season of the NHL's next great saviour. When Sidney Crosby was first drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins, we knew he was bright, photogenic, personable, and a media darling. The only question that remained was whether he could handle the big time. From an international advertising deal with Reebok to a season of personal triumphs and gut-wrenching challenges -- with a little argument from Don Cherry along the way -- Sid the Kid has proven that he is the man. In the tradition of "A Season on the Brink" and Peter Gzowski's "The Game of Our Lives," Shawna Richer has had the exclusive assignment of chronicling Sidney Crosby's incredible rookie season. Beginning with the NHL entry draft that almost never was, Richer follows Crosby to Pittsburgh, where he is greeted as the team's saviour and moves in with living legend Mario Lemieux. Just eighteen, the league's youngest player makes the leap to the NHL look easy and is named its best rookie in his first month, while performing under great expectations and intense scrutiny. He quickly becomes his team's leading scorer and best player; there are triumphant openings in New York, Toronto, and Montreal. But like Gretzky and Lemieux, the young superstars who came before him, his first NHL season provides immense challenges. The Penguins struggle to win games and fire their coach early on, all with the threat that the team may be sold and leave Pittsburgh hanging over their heads. Through it all, Crosby rises to each challenge. His story is destined to become a classic. "With less than a minute left to play, and the game appearing to be headed to a shootout, Crosby vaulted over the bench for his final shift. At the same time, across the rink in the corner near the Penguins net, Ryan Malone pulled the puck onto his stick. The rangy sophomore forward looked around for an open man nearby, but then he spied Crosby near centre ice, just starting to head across the zone. The rookie was wide open and all alone. Malone fired a long lead pass to his teammate straight up the middle of the rink. Just over the centre line, Crosby pulled the puck in and charged into the Flyers zone, all the anger from earlier contained entirely on the blade of his stick. The only thing between him and Niittymaki was less than ninety feet of well-worn ice. The Finnish goaltender shimmied out of his crease in an attempt to cut down the view of the net, but Crosby was churning so hard and so fast he quickly backed up. Sidney spotted an opening on Niittymaki's stick side, and in an instant, he shot and scored. He raised his arms and shouted. He circled back toward centre ice, all broken teeth and fat lip and unbridled rage and joy and sweet revenge in one package. The crowd roared its displeasure." -From "The Rookie" "From the Hardcover edition."

Meridian Explorer Dac Audio USB Digital media form an increasingly popular source of entertainment, with superb ease of access. Now there’s no need to compromise quality to achieve that convenience. Explorer is the size of a USB stick, yet embodies the same style and performance as any other Meridian product. SIMPLY LISTEN Explorer replaces your computer’s sound card with a USB-powered DAC (Digital to Analogue Converter) featuring Meridian’s high quality audio circuitry and design derived from Meridian’s award-winning Reference Series components, along with a powerful headphone amplifier with on-board analogue volume control. Whatever your choice of content – iTunes, Spotify®, YouTube® or a High Resolution downloaded file, Explorer makes it sound its best. Simply by plugging it in and listening with it, you’ll experience significantly higher sound quality. Asynchronous USB Audio Class Compliant 2.0 HS 480Mb/s for best-in-class performance Highest resolution on the market (24-bit/192kHz) 192kHz fixed & variable analogue and 96kHz optical outputs 6-layer circuit board with audiophile-grade components throughout USB-powered; plugs into any computer with a USB port As with all Meridian products, our goal in developing the Explorer is to help you enjoy the music you love with the very highest quality playback, without compromise, using innovative engineering and technology. Inside the Explorer Audiophile music-grade electrolytic capacitors decouple the analogue audio stages, significantly improving the quality. Indeed, an enormous amount of careful design work has gone into the analogue circuitry of the Explorer, of which those capacitors are just a part. A significant proportion of the 6-layer circuit board is given over to analogue, not digital, circuitry. Attention to detail Explorer comes with a short USB cable instead of plugging straight into the computer like a dongle: there’s no danger of damaging the computer motherboard if you accidentally walk off with your headphones on. Instead of a plastic box, Explorer has a sturdy aluminium enclosure, reducing noise and interference as well as allowing it to withstand life on the move. Analogue volume control Most DACs simply alter the digital signal going into them, so the quieter you listen, the lower the quality. Explorer uses an analogue volume control, driven from the operating system, so you always enjoy the full digital resolution. Additional outputs As well as headphones, Explorer includes analogue and S/PDIF digital optical outputs. Connect Explorer to your home audio system and enjoy the ultimate in replay quality from your computer. It provides a fixed-level output so you can use your system’s volume control – for the very highest quality at any listening level. True Class 2 USB audio device Explorer has extended digital bandwidth, playing audio up to 192kHz sampling. You can plug it anywhere in your system – into a USB hub for example – not only direct into the computer. Fully asynchronous Explorer includes dual high-quality oscillators, based on those found in Meridian’s top-of-the-line Reference Series components, so it can handle any standard sample rate up to 192kHz with minimal jitter and thus improved clarity and stereo imaging. Power Explorer is a true Class 2 audio device and is powered entirely from the interface, with no additional power supply required. Simply plug it in to any USB port. Inputs USB mini type B.
