Vernacular Architecture in Southern Illinois: The Ethnic

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Coggeshall, John M. / Nast, Jo A. / Tindall, Randy, PUBLISHER: Southern Illinois University Press, Featuring 157 photographs by Randy Tindall with explanatory text, this book preserves both the architectural and cultural heritage of the French, Anglo-Americans, Germans, Poles, Italians, and Slovakians in 16 counties of southern Illinois. Drawing on interviews as well as empirical research, the authors examine the various ethnic influences on vernacular architecture (everyday structures built without the aid of an architect). To that end they illustrate and discuss domestic, commercial, and ecclesiastical building styles, the cultural use of space, place-names, epigraphs and related inscriptions, settlement patterns, and some types of folk art and material culture. They show through text and photograph what the immigrants brought to southern Illinois and how their influence remains today.

The Theory and Philosophy of Organizations: Critical Issues

The Theory and Philosophy of Organizations: Critical Issues

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Hassard, John / Pym, Denis, PUBLISHER: Routledge, "The Theory and Philosophy of Organisations" assesses and analyzes the assumptions upon which our understanding of organizations is based and in doing so aims to redirect the ways in which organizational research is conceived and executed. Contributions to the volume emphasize how all approaches to the study of organizations are influenced by deep metatheoretical assumptions about the nature of science and society. It is argued that these differences create a spectrum of valid perspectives and methods, and the book outlines how conceptual problems in the field have given rise to innovative forms of empirical enquiry such as symbolism, postmodernism, ethnomethodology and structuralism. Criticizing the conservatism which has characterized much of the work in this field, the authors offers this range of methods as a starting point for obtaining richer and more grounded explanations of organizations.

H.G. Bronn, Ernst Haeckel, and the Origins of German

H.G. Bronn, Ernst Haeckel, and the Origins of German

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Gliboff, Sander, PUBLISHER: MIT Press (MA), The German translation of Darwin's "The Origin of Species" appeared in , just months after the original, thanks to Heinrich Georg Bronn, a distinguished German paleontologist whose work in some ways paralleled Darwin's. Bronn's version of the book (with his own notes and commentary appended) did much to determine how Darwin's theory was understood and applied by German biologists, for the translation process involved more than the mere substitution of German words for English. In this book, Sander Gliboff tells the story of how "The Origin of Species" came to be translated into German, how it served Bronn's purposes as well as Darwin's, and how it challenged German scholars to think in new ways about morphology, systematics, paleontology, and other biological disciplines. Gliboff traces Bronn's influence on German Darwinism through the early career of Ernst Haeckel, Darwin's most famous nineteenth-century proponent and popularizer in Germany, who learned his Darwinism from the Bronn translation. Gliboff argues, contrary to most interpretations, that the German authors were not attempting to "tame" Darwin or assimilate him to outmoded systems of romantic "Naturphilosophie." Rather, Bronn and Haeckel were participants in Darwin's project of revolutionizing biology. We should not, Gliboff cautions, read pre-Darwinian meanings into Bronn's and Haeckel's Darwinian words. Gliboff describes interpretive problems faced by Bronn and Haeckel that range from the verbal (how to express Darwin's ideas in the existing German technical vocabulary) to the conceptual. One of these conceptual problems, the origins of novel variation and the proper balance between creativity and constraint in evolution, emerges as crucial. Specialists in evolutionary biology today, Gliboff points out, continue to grapple with comparable questions--continuing a larger process of translation and interpretation of Darwin's work.

Theoretical Aspects of Local Search

Theoretical Aspects of Local Search

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Michiels, Wil / Aarts, Emile / Korst, Jan, PUBLISHER: Springer, Local search has been applied successfully to a diverse collection of optimization problems. It's appreciated for its basic conceptual foundation, its general applicability, and its power to serve as a source for new search paradigms. The typical characteristics of combinatorial optimization problems to which local search can be applied, its relation to complexity theory, and the combination with randomized search features have led to a wealth of interesting theoretical results. However, these results are scattered throughout the literature. This is the first book that presents a large collection of theoretical results in a consistent manner, thus providing the reader with a coherent overview of the achievements obtained so far, but also serving as a source of inspiration for the development of novel results in the challenging field of local search. Prehistoric and Egyptian Medicine

Prehistoric and Egyptian Medicine

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Dawson, Ian, PUBLISHER: Enchanted Lion Books, What is as fundamental to a society and just as revealing as its habits of food preparation, work, dress, religious belief, and artistic production? Just as essential are its ideas about the body, health and illness. Offering insights, both broad and deep, into the cultures it explores, The History of Medicine series describes medical knowledge, practices, instruments and discoveries from prehistoric times to the present. Each of its 6 volumes presents the social and economic characteristics of the period under discussion, the prevailing state of medical knowledge, and the key figures in medicine. The books are divided into chapters focusing on questions, such as: what caused people to be healthy or unhealthy? What ideas did people have about the causes of illnesses and their treatments? Who provided medical care? How efficacious were the treatments used? Allowing the facts to speak for themselves, these volumes present a lively and informative account of medical beliefs and practices and the many causes behind their change over time. Photographs and illustrations, as well as biography panels, quotation panels and "interesting fact" panels appear throughout each book, further engaging the young reader. What was known about the body by early peoples? What understanding of disease and treatments did people have? What can we learn about prehistoric health and medicine from archaeology? Why did the Egyptians use honey as often as they did? Why did medicine men suck the body of the ill person? Prehistoric and Egyptian Medicine explores these questions and many more. How healthy were prehistoric people? Using evidence from Orkney in the British Isles, the author shows how archaeology can helpus to understand something about life expectancy, fitness and the causes of pain among prehistoric people. The book also reveals what Native Americans and Australian aboriginals can teach us prehistoric medicine. The medical ideas of ancient Egypt also are explored. We learn about written records, specialized doctors, charms, embalming and more. Well-illustrated and rich with detail, Prehistoric and Egyptian Medicine is informative and at times, surprising.

Elements of Color Photography: A Photo Anthology

Elements of Color Photography: A Photo Anthology

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Todd, George / Watson-Guptill, PUBLISHER: Amphoto Books, In Elements of Color Photography a veteran photographer distills the knowledge and experience he gained over 30 years as a writer, teacher, and practicing photographer to show readers how he created dozens of dazzling color images from his own portfolio. Ranging from the purely abstract and still life to architecture, landscapes, and people, George Todd's photographs demonstrate that strongly contrasting forms and shadows need not be confined to classic black-and-white photography. Through clear step-by-step illustrations, Todd shows how color photography can become an effective composition tool, as much of a fine art form as monochrome--and the photos gain an added dimension with the bold and inventive use of color. Plus, this anthology features dazzling, full-color examples of Todd's photographic techniques in action.

Papyrus

Papyrus

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Parkinson, Richard / Quirke, Stephen / Parkinson, R. B., PUBLISHER: University of Texas Press, One of the most outstanding inventions of ancient Egypt was the making of "paper" from the papyrus plant. As early as B.C., sheets and rolls of papyrus provided an ideal surface for writing with reed pen and cakes of carbon black and red ochre pigment. Egyptian scribes were able to record on papyri everyday details such as administrative records, legal documents, and letters of business and personal life. Equally important for our understanding of ancient Egypt, pen and papyrus were used to record literary texts, tales, and moral instructions, as well as compendia of Egyptian knowledge exemplified by the famous Rhind Mathematical Papyrus and the books of treatment, prescriptions, and recitations for healing. Religious hymns and litanies are recorded, as are the great formulae to secure life after death--the Coffin Texts and the Book of the Dead. In this book, Richard Parkinson and Stephen Quirke freshly examine the methods of papyrus-making and its different uses, not only under the Pharaohs, but also other Egyptian civilizations such as the Hellenistic kingdom of the Ptolemies and the colonial rule of the Roman Empire. Papyrus remained the writing material of the Mediterranean world until it was eclipsed by the cloth paper of the Orient in the ninth century A.D., bringing four thousand years of writing tradition to an end. Learning to Read the Numbers: Integrating Critical Literacy

Learning to Read the Numbers: Integrating Critical Literacy

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Whitin, David J. / Whitin, Phyllis E., PUBLISHER: Routledge, Being a critical reader of data is an integral part of being fully literate in todaya (TM)s information age. Children need to know how to challenge conclusions, uncover assumptions, and analyze how data can both reveal and conceal certain kinds of relationships. This text shows prospective and practicing K-8 teachers how to help students develop a critical perspective involving knowledge of essential skills and concepts in both mathematics and language, and the ability to use this knowledge to both effectively compose statistical texts and critique the texts of others. Data-related texts are multimodal, incorporating language as well as visual and numerical information. Arguing that these texts must be interrogated for their biases and limitations, and underscoring the interdisciplinary importance of this stance by drawing on theoretical perspectives from both the fields of language and mathematics, Learning to Read the Numbers: Uniquely addresses both mathematics and language issues as they relate to developing a critical perspective toward data-related texts in the elementary classroom Presents a heuristic outlining key parts of the data-gathering process and important questions that teachers can pose to nurture this critical orientation Examines the dimensions of this process in depth, drawing on examples from a range of elementary school classes, as well as some examples from the media Suggests questions that teachers might consider as they think about fostering a critical perspective in their classrooms Features a close look at a fifth grade class as it engages in a long-term study of the school lunch program a DEGREES' their experience illustrates how the various aspects of the heuristic are developed over time Engaging, concise, rich with examples and clear connections to classroom practice, this text is designed for teacher education courses in the areas of language arts, mathematics, and curriculum studies, and for elementary teachers, administrators, and literacy and mathematics coaches.
