Software Metrics

Software Metrics

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Sayward, Frederick / Shaw, Mary / Perlis, Alan J., PUBLISHER: MIT Press (MA), Software metrics is a new area of computer science designed to enable programmers and other practitioners to assign quantitative indexes of merit to software. In this volume, "software" is defined broadly as a generic for all the stages of tailoring a computer system to solve a problem. "Software Metrics" is the first book to survey this new area, measuring its present extent, describing its characteristic features, and indicating directions of potential expansion. The aim of the articles included in the book is to provide precise, quantified answers to such questions as: What are the memory requirements of the software? The speed requirements? What is the cost of production? The likely time schedule of production? When will it have to be replaced? What manpower loading should be used? how close to its limits is the system expected to run? What levels of satisfactory testing are sufficient? How well does the testing environment approximate the execution environment? What is the enhancement cost? To what extent has the problem--of the technology--moved beyond the program? Would it cost less to rebuild the system than to maintain and enhance it? "In software, evolutionary complexity is probably more important than the classical time and space measures with which computer science has been concerned so far," the editors note in their introductory overview. This overview gauges the range of the book's fifteen contributions by the major developers of software metrics.

Rationality and Logic

Rationality and Logic

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Hanna, Robert, PUBLISHER: MIT Press (MA), In "Rationality and Logic," Robert Hanna argues that logic is intrinsically psychological and that human psychology is intrinsically logical. He claims that logic is cognitively constructed by rational animals (including humans) and that rational animals are essentially logical animals. In order to do so, he defends the broadly Kantian thesis that all (and only) rational animals possess an innate cognitive "logic faculty." Hanna's claims challenge the conventional philosophical wisdom that sees logic as a fully formal or "topic-neutral" science irreconcilably separate from the species- or individual-specific focus of empirical psychology. Logic and psychology went their separate ways after attacks by Frege and Husserl on logical psychologism--the explanatory reduction of logic to empirical psychology. Hanna argues, however, that--despite the fact that logical psychologism is false--there is an essential link between logic and psychology. Rational human animals constitute the basic class of cognizers or thinkers studied by cognitive psychology; given the connection between rationality and logic that Hanna claims, it follows that the nature of logic is significantly revealed to us by cognitive psychology. Hanna's proposed "logical cognitivism" has two important consequences: the recognition by logically oriented philosophers that psychologists are their colleagues in the metadiscipline of cognitive science; and radical changes in cognitive science itself. Cognitive science, Hanna argues, is not at bottom a natural science; it is both an objective or truth-oriented science and a normative human science, as is logic itself.

Nodal Discontinuous Galerkin Methods: Algorithms, Analysis,

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Hesthaven, Jan S. / Warburton, Tim, PUBLISHER: Springer, The text offers an introduction to the key ideas, basic analysis, and efficient implementation of discontinuous Galerkin finite element methods (DG-FEM) for the solution of partial differential equations. All key theoretical results are either derived or discussed, including an overview of relevant results from approximation theory, convergence theory for numerical PDEa (TM)s, orthogonal polynomials etc. Through embedded Matlab codes, the algorithms are discussed and implemented for a number of classic systems of PDEa (TM)s, e.g., Maxwella (TM)s equations, Euler equations, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, and Poisson- and Helmholtz equations. These developments are done in detail in one and two dimensions on general unstructured grids with high-order elements and all essential routines for 3D extensions are also included and discussed briefly. The three appendices contain an overview of orthogonal polynomials and associated library routines used throughout, a brief introduction to grid generation, and an overview of the associated software (where to get it, list of variables etc). A variety of exercises are included at the end of most chapters.

Numerical Computation in Science and Engineering

Numerical Computation in Science and Engineering

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Pozrikidis, C., PUBLISHER: Oxford University Press, USA, Designed for non-expert students and researchers, this text provides an accessible introduction to scientific numerical computation and its applications. It assumes no prior knowledge beyond undergraduate calculus and elementary computer programming. Fundamental and practical issues are discussed in a unified manner with a generous, but not excessive, dose of numerical analysis. The topics are introduced on a need to know basis in order to concisely illustrate the practical implementation of a variety of algorithms and to demystify seemingly esoteric numerical methods. Algorithms that can be explained without too much elaboration and implemented within a few dozen lines of computer code are discussed in detail; those whose underlying theories require long, elaborate explanations are discussed at the level of first principles, and references for further information are given. The book uses schematic illustrations to demonstrate concepts and facilitate understanding by providing readers with a helpful interplay between ideas and visual images. Real-world examples, drawn from various branches of science and engineering, are presented in those cases where it would be difficult for readers to produce their own. The text is further enhanced by an accompanying library of FORTRAN programs, freely available on the World Wide Web at http://www-ames.ucsd.edu/research/pozrikidis/ncse. Drawing a direct connection between numerical analysis and numerical computation, Numerical Computation in Science and Engineering serves as an ideal text for courses in numerical methods and as a supplement in any course involving numerical computation, including fluid mechanics, solid mechanics, control theory, and thermodynamics.

The New Renaissance: Computers and the Next Level of

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Robertson, Douglas S., PUBLISHER: Oxford University Press, USA, The electronic computer, argues Douglas Robertson, is the most important invention in the history of technology, if not all history It has already set off an information explosion that has changed many facets of civilization beyond recognition. These changes have ushered in nothing less than the dawn of a new level of civilization. In The New Renaissance, Robertson offers an important historical perspective on the computer revolution, by comparing it to three earlier landmarks of human development--language, writing, and printing. We see how these three inventions changed how we capture, store, and distribute information, and how each thereby triggered an information explosion that transformed society, ushering in a new civilization utterly unlike anything before. But history has never seen a revolution on the scale of the one being sparked by computers today. What can we expect from the most important technological breakthrough in human history? Robertson lays out possible scenarios regarding transformations in science and mathematics, education, language, the arts, and everyday life. School children, for instance, will forsake pencil and paper for keyboard and calculator, much as their forebears forsook clay tablets and abaci for pencil and paper. In films, the computer simulations of Jurassic Park could be eclipsed by "synthespians," artificial actors indistinguishable from living ones. Whether one is a computer enthusiast, a popular science buff, or simply someone fascinated by the future, The New Renaissance provides a breathtaking peek at the magnitude of changes we can expect as the full power of computers is unleashed.
