Robert O. Paxton - Il Saggiatore ISBN: La storia della Francia presenta nel novecento un capitolo oscuro: gli anni di Vichy. Dopo l''umiliante disfatta del il paese venne diviso in due; la parte settentrionale fu direttamente occupata dalle truppe tedesche, mentre in quella meridionale il maresciallo Petain creo'' sotto la tutela nazista uno stato collaborazionista e reazionario che aveva nella citta'' termale di Vichy la sua capitale. Per decenni i francesi hanno creduto che quello di Petain fosse un regime fantoccio dei tedeschi e quindi non direttamente responsabile delle atrocita' commesse. Il libro di Paxton invece mostra che aveva considerevoli margini di autonomia di cui fece il peggior uso possibile. Emigrants and Exiles chronicles the momentous causes of the Irish emigration and its far-reaching impact--on the people themselves, on the land they left behind, and on the new one they came to. Drawing on enormous original research, Kerby Miller focuses on the thought and behavior of the "ordinary" Irish emigrants, Catholic and Protestant, as revealed in their personal letters, diaries, journals and memoirs as well as in their songs, poems, and folklore. He finds that while many were eager newcomers to "the land of promise," many more saw themselves as involuntary "exiles" who had been forced to leave Ireland by cruel fate or British oppression. The exile mentality, Miller shows, was deeply rooted in Irish history, culture, and personality, and it profoundly affected the traumatic course of modern Irish history even as it shaped the Irish-American experience in very particular ways. Dittafono a cilindro
Le origini del dittafono risalgono all'ultimo ventennio dell'Ottocento. Fu realizzato allora un sistema di registrazione e riproduzione della voce basato sull'incisione di cilindri di cera. L'apparecchio consisteva di un cornetto acustico, di una puntina e di un motore elettrico che faceva ruotare il cilindro. Il cornetto fungeva da microfono trasmettendo le vibrazioni della voce alla puntina. La puntina incideva il cilindro in rotazione, imprimendo nella cera il messaggio vocale. Il messaggio poteva essere ascoltato riportando la puntina all'inizio del solco inciso e mettendo l'apparecchio in modalità di riproduzione sonora; in questo caso il cornetto serviva da altoparlante. Il dittafono a cilindro ebbe larghissima diffusione nei primi decenni del Novecento. Esso razionalizzò l'organizzazione del lavoro d'ufficio liberando i dirigenti dalla necessità di dettare personalmente le lettere commerciali alle dattilografe. Il testo della lettera, infatti, poteva essere registrato in ogni momento e dattiloscritto in qualsiasi momento successivo. L'esemplare qui proposto in vendita reca il marchio "The Dictaphone" della Columbia Graphophone Company, società proprietaria del brevetto originale del dittafono. Esso fu prodotto negli anni '30 dalla succursale londinese dell'azienda e rimase in uso fino agli anni '50. Il funzionamento dell'apparecchio non è stato verificato perciò esso è venduto come oggetto da collezione. Il dittafono è alto 28 cm., largo 32 cm. e profondo 16 cm. Il suo peso è di 12,5 kg. Se l'apparecchio viene spedito, al prezzo d'acquisto bisogna aggiungere 10 euro di spese postali, che salgono a 15 euro se è richiesto il servizio di pagamento in contrassegno. In the absence of ubiquitous, high-speed broadband Internet connections for residential and small-business customers, the demand for IT equipment and new Internet service applications may stagnate. Broadband policy is controversial in large part because of the differences in the regulatory regimes faced by different types of carriers. Cable television companies face neither retail price regulation of their cable modem services nor any requirements to make their facilities available to competitors. Local telephone companies, on the other hand, face both retail price regulation for their DSL service and a requirement imposed by the Telecommunications Act that they unbundle their network facilities and lease them to rivals. Finally, new entrants are largely unregulated, but many rely on facilities leased from the incumbent telephone companies at regulated rates to connect to their customers. This asymmetric regulation is the focus of this volume, in which telecommunications scholars address the public policy issues that have arisen over the deployment of new high-speed telecommunications services. Robert W. Crandall is a senior fellow in the Economic Studies program at the Brookings Institution. Affirmative Action in Medicine: Improving Health Care for

James L. Curtis approaches this important transition from historical, statistical, and personal perspectives. He tells how over the course of his medical education and career as a psychiatrist and professor--often as the first or only African American in his cohort--the status of minorities in the medical professions grew from a tiny percentage to a far more equitable representation of the American population. Advancing arguments from his earlier book, Blacks, Medical Schools, and Society, Curtis evaluates the outcomes of affirmative action efforts over the past thirty years. He describes formidable barriers to minority access to medical-education opportunities and the resulting problems faced by minority patients in receiving medical treatment. His progress report includes a review of two thousand minority students admitted to U.S. medical schools in , following them through graduation and their careers, comparing them with the careers of two thousand of their nonminority peers. These samples provide an important look at medical schools that, while heralding dramatic progress in physician education and training opportunity, indicates much room for further improvement. A basic hurdle continues to face African Americans and other minorities who are still confined to segregated neighborhoods and inferior school systems that stifle full scholastic development. Curtis urges us as a nation to develop all our human resources through an expansion ofaffirmative action programs, thus improving health care for everyone. James L.
