ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Beatty, Paul, PUBLISHER: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH), Paul Beatty, on the basis of two slim collections of poetry, Big Bank Take Little Bank and Joker, Joker, Deuce, has been called "the premier bard of hip hop," "a West Coast word wizard," and"the poet laureate of Generation X." He has performed his poetry on college campuses throughout the United States and Europe; he's been lauded by Henry Louis Gates, Jr.; and at thirty-three years old, he has been deemed heir to Allen Ginsberg's oral tradition. His cultural landscape summons up music, sound bites, cartoons, films, and video games. He uses the terms of pop culture to reveal its nonsense, and in his astonishing first novel he brings his extraordinary talent for image, cadence, and rhythm to fiction. Beatty's partly autobiographical novel is a moving, deft satire on issues of race as well as a coming-of-age of a contemporary African American, Gunnar Kaufman, who is in no way typical. Unequivocally and without apology, Gunnar states that he is not the seventh son of a seventh son of a se

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Greitens, Eric, PUBLISHER: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH), How best to save the world--as saint, soldier, or... both? Like many young idealists, Eric Greitens wanted to make a difference. Throughout college and after, he traveled to the world's trouble spots, working in refugee camps, serving the sick and the poor on four continents, from Gaza to Croatia to Mother Theresa's home in Calcutta, among others. Yet he could not prevent violence or save anyone from becoming a refugee, he could only step in afterward, and try to ease the damage. So he joined the Navy SEALs, and became one of the world's most elite warriors. In a moving and inspiring, and yet also humble memoir, Eric offers something new in the history of military memoirs: a warrior who wanted to be strong to be good, only to discover that he had to be good to be strong. Throughout his SEAL training and deployments in Kenya, Thailand, Afghanistan, and Iraq, the lessons of his humanitarian work bore fruit. The result is a lesson for us all: The heart and fist together are more powerful than either one alone.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Hilton, Frank, PUBLISHER: Peter Owen Publishers, Charles Baudelaire was a pivotal link between Romanticism and Modernism and had a major influence on modern poetry, but few who have examined his life and work have fully understood the effect of opiate addiction on his personality, or the extent to which it damaged him. In this fascinating, comprehensive biography, Frank Hilton, lecturer at Central St. Martins College of Art and Design in England, contends that the drug is at the root of all of Baudelaire's problems, and in particular his chronic inability to apply himself to any prolonged creative work, which constantly tormented him. Unquestionably there is significantly more to Baudelaire than his opium addiction. But a proper awareness of what it did to the poet helps to illuminate those puzzling aspects of his life and behavior that were not previously understood. This work will give those who know little or nothing about the great poet a wide-ranging portrait of a suffering artist, and to those who are familiar with Baudelaire's life and work, it will present him in an unexpected light.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Morris, Caroline, PUBLISHER: Hart Publishing (UK), Getting a PhD in Law is a unique guide to obtaining the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of Law in the UK. While there are a wide range of study guides for PhD students in the social sciences and other science-based disciplines, there is very little information available on the process of obtaining a PhD in law. Research degrees in law share some attributes with those in related disciplines, such as the humanities and social sciences. However, the legal methodology and the place of the PhD in the young lawyer's career creates unique challenges that have not been addressed by existing guides. Getting a PhD in Law fills this gap, providing an accessible guide to the process, from topic selection to thesis publication. This readable and informative guide is written by two graduates of the successful PhD program at the School of Law, King's College London. The book draws on interviews and case studies with students, supervisors, and examiners. Getting a PhD in Law will be essential reading for the growing numbers of PhD students in the UK's many law schools, as well as those internationally who wish to learn from the UK's best practice.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: O'Connell, Mary / Bishop, Erin I., PUBLISHER: Cork University Press, On May , fourteen year-old Daniel O'Connell Jr., son of the "Liberator," left his comfortable home in Dublin to attend the Jesuit college at Clongowes Wood in County Kildare. Thus began a three-year correspondence between Danny Jr. and his mother, Mary O'Connell. Bursting with love and affection, illness and death, politics and scandal, these letters allow a brief glimpse at the relationship between mother and son in nineteenth-century Ireland. In addition, this collection documents a portion of an important juncture in the political career of Danny's father Daniel O'Connell. Returned for Clare in the by-election, the "Liberator" took his seat in as the first Catholic Member of Parliament, and for the next several years focused his attention on the parliamentary business carried out in London. This collection of letters between mother and son is doubly valuable, because it not only offers insights into both the ordinary social history of nineteenth-century Ireland, but into the extraordinary and exciting political history of parliamentary politics and of Daniel O'Connell as well.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Barber, Paul A., PUBLISHER: Authorhouse, 404pgs-The Great Depression, Dust Bowl, and a Kansas tornado had left the Barber family reeling. Then came WW II and three sons were called to service. Air Corps planes began flying low level missions over the farm, capturing the imagination of yet a younger son, Paul. In this story of motivation, dedication and excellence, Paul Barber follows his dream, becomes an Air Force pilot, commands a flying unit, and with a simple statement, "Another Day in Which to Excel," challenges himself, his crews, and his family to be their very best. You will see the Cuban Missile Crisis from his vantage point; tag along on high altitude air-refueling missions; learn how the U.S. won the peace during the Cold War with the Soviets; feel the stress on him and his flight crews in the Vietnam War; and view near tragedies during critical phases of flight. You will understand his frustration in writing President Nixon's Plan of Withdrawal from Vietnam, as North Vietnam, seeing the discord in America, refuses to negotiate. In the Pentagon's National Military Command Center, you will observe crisis management at the highest level, as his team stands prepared to launch U.S. Nuclear Forces against the Soviet Union, if they attack America. You will witness his preparation of college ROTC students for military service, and finally, his preparation of older Americans for a financially secure retirement. Throughout this inspirational story, the strength of family and power of faith are highlighted. Reviews: "This is a fascinating story with great insights, a story written in ways that will interest people who appreciate our great American heritage, from the wheat fields of Kansas to the world-shaking events in the Pentagon and the White House. Historians, family leaders, church people, military personnel, farmers, financial specialists and others will find this book interesting reading. In it they will find wisdom and motivation for successful living. This book is confirmation of the power generated when an individual uses the combination of faith, family, education, and hard work to reach personal goals and live a productive and satisfying life." ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Nathan, Linda F., PUBLISHER: Beacon Press (MA), The Boston Arts Academy comprises an ethnically and socioeconomically diverse student body, yet 94 percent of its graduates are accepted to college. Compare this with the average urban district rate of 50 percent. How do they do it? This remarkable success, writes Principal Linda Nathan, is in large part due to asking the right questions--questions all schools can consider, such as: - How and why does a school develop a shared vision of what it stands for? - What makes a great teacher, and how can a principal help good teachers improve? - Why must schools talk openly about race and achievement, and what happens when they do? With engaging honesty, Nathan gives readers a ring-side seat as faculty, parents, and the students themselves grapple with these questions, attempt to implement solutions, and evaluate the outcomes. Stories that are inspirational as well as heartbreaking reveal the missteps and failures--as well as the successes. Nathan doesn't claim to have all the answers, but seeks to share her insights on schools that matter, teachers who inspire, and students who achieve.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Porte, Joel / Emerson, Ralph Waldo, PUBLISHER: Belknap Press, This long-awaited volume offers the general reader the heart of Emerson's journals, that extraordinary series of diaries and notebooks in which he poured out his thoughts for more than fifty years, beginning with the "luckless ragamuffin ideas" of his college days. Emerson as revealed in his journals is more spontaneous, more complex, more human and appealing than he appears in the published works. This man is the seeker rather than the sage; he records the turmoil, struggle, and questioning that preceded the serene and confident affirmations of the essays. He is honest, earthy, tough-minded, self-critical ("I am a lover of indolence, & of the belly"), warm in his enthusiasms, a witty and sharp observer of people and events. Everything is grist for his mill: personal experiences, his omnivorous reading, ruminations on matters large and small, his doubts and perplexities, public issues and local gossip. There are abrupt shifts in subject and tone, reflecting the variousness of his moods and the restless energy of his mind. Drawing from Harvard's sixteen-volume scholarly edition of the journals--but omitting the textual apparatus that makes it hard to read--Joel Porte presents a sympathetic selection that brings us close to Emerson the man. 'At Chicago, ' Leacock wrote wryly, 'they made a genial pretense that I was fit for the graduate school in economics. It is a little hard to see why, except that I was obviously not fit to die.' Leacock graduated from the university in . His dissertation, until now, was thought to be lost. Carl Spadoni's discovery of this thesis -- unread since its defense -- gives readers a unique opportunity to re-examine Leacock's philosophies. 'The Doctrine of Laissez Faire' reveals the early roots of his scepticism about political economy on which his later works of humour fed. In it, Leacock attempts to demystify the dogmatic opposition to state intervention based on this economic precept. In his introduction, Spadoni provides the historical background for an intellectual understanding of Leacock's thesis. The first part of this book is a short essay by Leacock in which he reminisces on his graduate years at Chicago. The second part consists of his newly unearthed thesis. Together, they provide a better understanding of one of the major figures of Canadian cultural theory.
