Chesnutt and Realism: A Study of the Novels

Chesnutt and Realism: A Study of the Novels

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Simmons, Ryan, PUBLISHER: University Alabama Press, An important examination of Charles Chesnutt as a practitioner of realism. With the release of previously unpublished novels and a recent proliferation of critical studies on his life and work, Charles W. Chesnutt () has emerged as a major American writer of his time--the age of Howells, Twain, and Wharton. In "Chesnutt and Realism, "Ryan Simmons breaks new ground by theorizing how understandings of literary realism have shaped, and can continue to shape, the reception of Chesnutt's work. Although Chesnutt is typically acknowledged as the most prominent African American writer of the realist period, little attention has been paid to the central question of this study: what does it mean to call Chesnutt a realist? A writer whose career was circumscribed by the dismal racial politics of his era, Chesnutt refused to conform to literary conventions for depicting race. Nor did he use his imaginative skills to evade the realities he and other African Americans faced. Rather, he experimented with ways of portraying reality that could elicit an appropriate, proportionate response to it, as Simmons demonstrates in extended readings of each of Chestnutt's novels, including important unpublished works that have been overlooked by previous critics. "Chesnutt and Realism" also addresses a curiously neglected subject in American literary studies--the relationship between American literary realism and race. By taking Chesnutt seriously as a contributor to realism, this book articulates the strategies by which one African American intellectual helped to define the discourses that influenced his fate. Modernism to Realism on the Soviet Stage: Tairov-

Modernism to Realism on the Soviet Stage: Tairov-

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Worrall, Nick, PUBLISHER: Cambridge University Press, This is the first book to deal with the work of three important Soivet theatre directors - Alexander Tairov, Evgeni Vakhtangov and Nikolai OkHlopkov - who, although familiar names in the West, are not often the subjects of full-length studies. The present one therefore sets out to introduce their work to theatre specialists and non-specialists alike, analysing individual productions and placing them within the context of their time. The active working life of the three directors spans, in varying stages, the period of revolution and civil war with its accompanying radical artistic innovations; the conservative phase of socialist realism in the s and s; and the more flexible and creative artistic years of the late s and s. The book contains a number of photographs of the original productions as well as a chronology of theatrical and historical events. Worrall's study will be of interest to students and scholars of Russian studies and theatre history.

Political Thought and International Relations: Variations on

Political Thought and International Relations: Variations on

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Bell, Duncan, PUBLISHER: Oxford University Press, Political realism dominated the study of international relations during the Cold War. Since then, however, its fortunes have been mixed: pushed onto the backfoot during s, it has in recent years retuned to the centre of scholarly debate in international relations. Yet despite its significance in international relations theory, realism plays little role in contemporary international political theory. It is often associated with a form of crude realpolitik that ignores the role of ethical considerations in political life. This book explores an alternative understanding of realism. The contributors view realism chiefly as a diverse and complex mode of political and ethical theorising rather than either a value-neutral branch of social science or the unreflective defence of the national interest. They analyse a variety of historical and philosophical themes, probing the potential and the pathologies of realist thought. A number of the chapters offer critical interpretations of key figures in the canon of twentieth century realism, including Hans Morgenthau, E. H. Carr, and Reinhold Niebuhr. Others seek to widen the lens through which realism is usually viewed, exploring the writings of Martin Heidegger, Hannah Arendt, and Leo Strauss. Finally, a number of the contributors engage with general issues in political theory, including the meaning and value of pessimism, the relationship between power and ethics, the role of normative political theory, and what might constitute political 'reality.' Straddling international relations and political theory, this book makes a significant contribution to both fields.

In Search of the Split Subject: Psychoanalysis,

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Mycak, Sonia, PUBLISHER: ECW Press, Examining a striking and recurrent aspect of her work--the divided self--this study focuses on the work of Margaret Atwood, offering detailed readings of six of her novels. Through a critical method that borrows freely from both psychoanalytic and phenomenological theorists, chapters on each novel place distinct emphasis on the concepts of each theory, covering such complex topics as secularization, oedipal relations and connections with the maternal, aggressive relativity, the Imaginary, the symbolic, mimesis, space and the dynamics of location, signification, and enunciative positioning. The result is an examination of the ways in which the identity of each protagonist is dislocated, alienated, splintered, and split according to the divisions that mark the subject, and new interpretations of each novel that take into account its characterization, narrative development, thematic content, and setting. An appendix serves to show how Atwood's remaining two novels could be best accounted for by other approaches, making the book a complete account of Atwood's novels to date.

Edith Wharton's Dialogue with Realism and Sentimental

Edith Wharton's Dialogue with Realism and Sentimental

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Hoeller, Hildegard, PUBLISHER: University Press of Florida, Arguing against the prevailing view of Edith Wharton as a realist writer, Hildegard Hoeller opens up the Wharton canon by finding the "real" Wharton in the writer's sentimental voice and in her critique of realism. With this focus on a blind spot in Wharton criticism, Hoeller demonstrates that the celebrated American writer created a dialogue between the two literary traditions. Most analyses of Wharton's work describe her early triumph as a realist and then her decline in the s into sentimental fiction. Instead, Hoeller examines important sentimental moments in Wharton's "realist" masterpieces and finds realism in the sentimental "minor" work (including the undervalued novel, The Mother's Recompense). Hoeller shows that Wharton used the sentimental voice both to express the truth of female desire and to express her critique of male realism. In this, Wharton is shown to be fully in control of her art from the beginning to the end of her career. Using Wharton as a case study, Hoeller maintains that the ongoing argument about the value of American sentimental fiction could benefit by seriously considering sentimental aesthetics. Only then, she says, will the term sentimental cease to be a label for inferior, female, and popular fiction and become a serious literary concept. This innovative book will be of interest to scholars of 19th- and 20th-century American fiction as well as feminist scholars and those interested in the ongoing debate about the American literary canon.

In this compelling study, Peggy Fitzhugh Johnstone goes beyond these traditional foci to examine the role of aggression in Eliot's fiction and to find its source in the author's unconscious sense of loss stemming from traumatic family separations and deaths during her childhood and adolescence. Johnstone demonstrates that Eliot's creative work was a constructive response to her sense of loss and that the repeating patterns in her novels reflect the process of release from her state of mourning for lost loved ones.
