ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Windeler, Robert, PUBLISHER: Birch Lane Press, In she celebrated fifty years in show business, having made her professional singing debut at the London Hippodrome in -- at age twelve. In the half century since those last days of British vaudeville through her smash Broadway comeback in Victor/Victoria, Julie Andrews has triumphed as an entertainer. At thirteen Andrews performed for the Queen of England; at nineteen she was a Broadway star. At twenty-one, as Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady, she became a theatrical legend. By thirty, she was the highest-paid and most beloved actress in the world, with an Academy Award for her first movie, Mary Poppins, and almost instant worldwide box-office championship with The Sound of Music. Her remarkable body of work had stamped her indelibly with an image she would come to hate; the quintessence of perky, wholesome innocence. After two flop musicals, Star and Darling Lili, the press and the public seemed to ignore her. She had turned into box-office poison in Hollywood. But even in semi-exile she worked in an Emmy-winning television variety series, wrote two successful children's books, and concentrated on her growing family. Julie Andrews had become a superstar before she became her own person, and now she made up for lost time. When she reemerged in movies in the s, it was in sensationally different roles, many of them created for her by her husband, Blake Edwards. After Duet for One, The Man Who Loved Women, and A Fine Romance there was no going back to Mary Poppins. In the s she returned to concert tours, musical recordings, and Broadway. She also returned to controversy, by refusing her nomination for an almost certain Tony Award to stand with the "egregiouslyoverlooked" -- the rest of the cast and crew, especially her writer-director husband. Here at last is the full life story of Julie Andrews -- her meteoric rise, her devastating fall, and her remarkable comeback; from the little English girl with the freaky four-octave, crystalline voice to the dynamic legend who has outlasted her critics. Robert Windeler's affectionate and insightful biography reveals the full-blooded woman behind the high and low notes.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Ross, Eileen, PUBLISHER: Royal Fireworks Publishing Company, Colorado, . Orphaned eleven-year-old Josh and his five-year-old sister Maribelle have come from St. Louis to a small farming town to live with childless Aunt Abigail and Uncle Caleb. Josh brings with him the shame of his father's past, and his own guilt that he is ashamed of the father he feels he is supposed to love. Josh also fears that someone will find out about his father and think that he, Josh, will grow up to be just like him. Inside, Josh wonders if he will. Josh dearly loves little Maribelle from whose innocence and love he draws strength. Uncle Caleb expects hard work and offers little praise. Aunt Abigail is all kindness. He wants to send the children to a foundling home in Cheyenne. She points out that it is not Christian to punish the children for their father's deed. Widow McClendon, intelligent, respected and obviously once very beautiful, employs Josh to do "chores." He enjoys being around her. She speaks with him, understands him, and because she, too, has a secret--she is the sister of the town's historic, infamous outlaw she knowingly counsels him about freedom from family guilt. Josh's days are filled with thinking his every action is universally scrutinized, trying to please his uncle on the farm and his teacher in school, and dealing with the aggressive school bully, Harlow. Josh's mettle and kind spirit are apparent throughout the story: his concern for his sister's well-being, his rescue of a puppy from certain death by freezing in the river, his concern for sick Uncle Caleb and his ability to handle both Caleb's farm chores and his own, his rescue of Harlow from a raging fire. While sitting with sleeping, sick Caleb one night, Josh writes to him from hisheart about his feelings. Later, unable to find time to complete a homework assignment for Thanksgiving, he submits the letter--a letter of hope to God from a child. All is resolved in time for Thanksgiving. Josh's "paper" is read at the town meeting as the best assignment where the teacher deems his work the village's Thanksgiving theme--looking back on the blessings of the past year and ahead to blessings which await us. Uncle Caleb recants: the children can stay. Harlow extends a hand of friendship. This is a superbly crafted story balancing action and contemplation.

After carving a place for itself among the struggling powers of 17th century Western Europe, the out-of-time modern town of Grantville, West Virginia must fight for its life in a war-torn Europe just emerging from medieval skullduggery. . Grantville has bounced back and established its new mission and identity, but it seems some have been left behind--people like Bernie Zeppi, courageous in the battle, but unable to figure out what to do with himself in a world that's utterly changed. Then Russian emissary Vladimir Gorchacov arrives in Grantville and hires Bernie to journey to Moscow and bring the future to a Russia mired in slavish serfdom and byzantine imperial plots. Bernie jumps at the chance. He figures it to be an easy gig, complete with high pay and hot-and-cold running women. But one thing Bernie hasn't counted on is the chance to find his purpose in Mother Russia, from fighting the needless death of children from typhoid to building the first dirigible in Russian history. And then there's love. Just as Bernie realizes his feeling for a certain Russian noblewoman may have gone way beyond respect, he finds them both enmeshed in the deadly politics of Kremlin power struggles. War with Poland is afoot and Russia itself is about to get a revolution from within-three centuries early. Bernie Zeppi, former Grantville auto mechanic, is going to have the chance to prove he's not the loser he believed himself to be. ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Grana, Cesar / Graaa, Ca(c)Sar / Graaa, Marigay, PUBLISHER: Transaction Publishers, Bohemia has been variously defined as a mythical country, a state of mind, a tavern by the wayside on the road of life. The editors of this volume prefer a leaner definition: an attitude of dissent from the prevailing values of middle-class society, one dependent on the existence of caf life. But whatever definition is preferred, this rich and long overdue collective portrait of Bohemian life in a large variety of settings is certain to engage and even entrance readers of all types: from the student of culture to social researchers and literary figures n search of their ancestral roots. The work is international in scope and social scientific in conception. But because of the special nature of the Bohemian fascination, the volume is also graced by an unusually larger number of exquisite literary essays. Hence, one will find in this anthology writings by Malcolm Cowely, Norman Podhoretz, Norman Mailer, Theophile Gautier, Honore de Balzac, Mary Austin, Stefan Zweig, Nadine Gordimer, and Ernest Hemingway. Social scientists are well represented by Cesar Grana, Ephraim Mizruchi, W.I. Thomas, Florian Znaniecki, Harvey Zorbaugh, John R. Howard, and G. William Domhoff, among others. The volume is sectioned into major themes in the history of Bohemia: social and literary origins, testimony by the participants, analysis by critics of and crusaders for the bohemian life, the ideological characteristics of the bohemians, and the long term prospect as well as retrospect for bohemenianism as a system, culture and ideology. The editors have provided a framework for examining some fundamental themes in social structure and social deviance: What are the levels of toleration within a society? Do artists deserve and receive special treatment by the powers that be? And what are the connections between bohemian life-styles and political protest movements? This is an anthology and not a treatise, so the reader is free to pick and choose not only what to read, but what sort of general patterns are essential and which are transitional. This collection, initiated by the late Cesar Grana, has been completed and brought to fruition by his wife Marigay Grana. Cesar Grana was, prior to his death, professor of sociology at the University of California in San Diego. Among his major books is "Meaning and Authenticity," also available from Transaction. Marigay Grana was formerly an urban planner and designer in San Diego. She now is a free-lance editor living in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Bewley, Elizabeth L., PUBLISHER: Dog Ear Publishing, Killer Cure will change forever how you think about your health and health care. Leaving conventional wisdom in the dust, Killer Cure reveals startling and unforgettable insights: Why health care in America accidentally kills people each week -- even though every doctor and nurse you know is terrific Why health care's hidden assumptions about you are almost certain to damage your health -- and what you can do about it Why health care's focus on solving yesterday's problems may reduce life expectancy in the U.S. -- by as much as five years Why you might want to become CEO of your own health and health care -- and how to go about it The root cause of America's health care crisis is that health care is not about you. Health care is not designed to help you enjoy good health. It is designed to help doctors take action: write prescriptions, perform surgery, etc. That focus hurts you in two ways: First, those actions are likely to damage you nearly as often as they help you because of side effects, complications, and other problems with care delivery. For example, hospital ICUs (Intensive Care Units) have a remarkable number of characteristics in common with prison camps for terrorist suspects. People die needless deaths as a result. Second, the focus on actions the doctor takes crowds out actions you could take that would often get you better outcomes. For example, more than people a year get a foot or leg amputated instead of learning simple ways to prevent foot infections in the first place. To get better results, the health care system first needs to embrace a new purpose: to enable people to lead the lives they want. Three further changes are necessary: The first is a social revolution akin to freeing the slaves or granting women the right to vote. With this revolution, the health care system will no longer treat the people it serves as if they were second-class citizens whose intelligence, values, priorities, and needs can safely be ignored while others call the shots. The second is more realistic expectations about what health care can deliver. The third is management of health care as a process -- connecting the dots among actions that are uncoordinated today. Killer Cure provides a tool kit to help you safeguard your life until these changes take place. Before closing, the book makes surprising predictions concerning a future in which health care is about you. At the end of Killer Cure is a Readers' Discussion Guide. It is offered to aid you in thinking about and discussing both the book and your own health care experiences.

Autofocus Autofocus is supported, with the following known limitations. Autofocus speed is very slow and inadequate for most moving subjects. The autofocus speed is unfit for professional use for sure, and it would disappoint most enthusiasts. Only Canon-branded lenses introduced in or after are officially supported. Autofocus may be disabled for older Canon lenses and most third-party lenses, including most Sigma, Tamron and Tokina lenses and all Contax N lenses modified by Conurus. On NEX camera bodies in camcorder form factor (e.g. FS series), autofocus may be available only in photo mode but not in movie capture mode. Continuous AF is not supported. DMF mode (direct manual focus) is not supported. For non-camcorder camera bodies (e.g. NEX-7), during movie capture, if the subject moves to a different distance, half-press the shutter release button to re-activate autofocus and lock onto the subject again. Since autofocus speed is slow, there may be visible disruption in the resulting footage. The first two autofocus attempts are used to calibrate the lens and as a result may not lock successfully on the target. Half-press the shutter release button again and autofocus will lock successfully. Autofocus may have difficultly locking onto subjects which are very close to the nearest focusing distance of the lens. Autofocus accuracy depends heavily on the working condition of the lens. Lenses with hidden problems which may not be apparent on Canon DSLRs will lead to inaccurate and unreliable autofocus on Sony NEX. Typical problems of this kind that we have seen include an unsmooth/erratic autofocus mechanism (e.g. getting stuck intermittently at a certain focusing distance), a faulty/worn-out distance encoder or other faulty/worn-out internal sensors. Why Metabones? Since its inception, Metabones has been designing and manufacturing lens adapters recognized among professionals and enthusiasts as leaders in design and workmanship. Contrary to the popular trend of other factories using an aluminum ring painted black on the camera-body-side, we instead take no short-cut but use precision-machined brass with chromium plating on both the camera-body and the lens sides of our adapters, in order to ensure smooth mounting, great appearance, and durability. The lens side of the adapter features a strong leaf-spring structure, strengthening the adapter-lens connection and ensuring tightness of the lens in order to reduce wear and prevent focus errors and optical alignment issues from appearing. Metabones uses matte-black treatment to keep internal reflection to a minimum in order to maintain the maximum optical quality possible with the lens. All Metabones Adapters follow this tradition of uncompromising precision, robust build quality and outstanding finish. Our new Smart AdapterTM series of products add industry-leading electronic interfacing technology from Canada, with true electronic control of the lens', aperture directly from the camera body. Features Both camera-side and lens-side of the adapter are made of brass, precision-machined and plated with chromium. Satin surface finish - just like your OEM lens and camera mounts. Precise fit and solid connection - lens has no play, gap or wiggling when mounted on adapter and no adjustments are required to fit your lens. Designed to reach infinity focus while maintaining the correct registration distance required to maintain optical quality of CRC lenses or lenses with floating elements. Our Smart AdapterTM series adapters have the following additional features True electronic integration of aperture diaphragm - let camera automatically choose aperture in P or S exposure modes, or dial in yourself on the camera body in A or M modes. EXIF data such as lens identification, focal length and aperture.
