ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Broughton, Trev Lynn, PUBLISHER: Routledge, Trev Lynn Broughton takes an in-depth look at the developments within Victorian auto/biography, and asks what we can learn about the conditions and limits of male literary authority. Providing a feminist analysis of the effects of this literary production on culture, Broughton looks at the increase in professions with a vested interest in the written Life; the speeding up of the Life-and-Letters industry during this period; the institutionalization of Life-writing; and the consequent spread of a network of mainly male practitioners and commentators. This study focuses on two case studies from the period : the theories and achievements of Sir Leslie Stephen and the debate surrounding James Anthony Froude's account of the marriage of Thomas and Jane Welsh Carlyle.

17th and 18th Centuries

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Salisbury, Joyce E. / Seelig, Peter, PUBLISHER: Greenwood Press, What did historical peoples eat, wear, use? What did they hope, invent, sing? Our lives are built on essential but seemingly mundane things: food, shelter, families, neighbors, work, and play. Our activities rarely rise to headline-making greatness, and the same holds true for the majority of people throughout history. Yet it's the unremembered details of people's everyday struggles and successes that have shaped history, and continue to drive the world we know. Perfect for general readers and students of world history, U.S. history, literature, drama, social studies, anthropology, religion, and more, this exuberant new resource offers an unprecedented look at human history's living heart: the billions of anonymous men and women too often forgotten by historical studies, but without whose lives human history would be meaningless.

God Without Being: Hors-Texte

God Without Being: Hors-Texte

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Marion, Jean-Luc / Carlson, Thomas A., PUBLISHER: University of Chicago Press, Jean-Luc Marion advances a controversial argument for a God free of all categories of Being. Taking a characteristically postmodern stance, Marion challenges a fundamental premise of both metaphysics and neo-Thomist theology: that God, before all else, must be. Rather, he locates a "God without Being" in the realm of agape, of Christian charity or love. This volume, the first translation into English of the work of this leading Catholic philosopher, offers a contemporary perspective on the nature of God. "An immensely thoughtful book.... It promises a rich harvest. Marion's highly original treatment of the idol and the icon, the Eucharist, boredom and vanity, conversion and prayer takes theological and philosophical discussions to a new level."--Norman Wirzba, "Christian Century"

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Milne, Lesley, PUBLISHER: Cambridge University Press, When it was published this was the full, post-glasnost critical biography of Mikhail Bulgakov (), a great comic writer whose works are regarded as modern classics. This account of Bulgakov's career as playwright and prose-writer examines all his works in the context of the changing demands put upon artists in the Soviet Union of the s and s, who were faced with the choice of integrity at the price of silence, or publication and production at the price of conformism with the totalitarian state. Lesley Milne traces through Bulgakov's career an ethical concept of the writer's role, his response to his time, and his search for an audience in and beyond that time.

Empowering Teachers and Parents: School Restructuring

Empowering Teachers and Parents: School Restructuring

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Hess, G. Alfred, Jr., PUBLISHER: J F Bergin & Garvey, A much-needed examination of the impact on teachers and parents of the effort to improve our schools through restructuring, this book looks at professionalization and parent empowerment programs from the ground level rather than from the large-scale policy level. The editor, active in both policy setting and monitoring implementation, approaches the subject with an overarching view that weaves together a set of diverse case studies that examine some of the most notable efforts in this area of school reform. The first section demonstrates the tremendous difficulties involved in attempting to reshape the culture of public school teaching, noting both institutional resistance to change and the personal resistance of the professionals who are, in theory, being empowered through this approach. The second section details the problems of launching parent empowerment opportunities, in a large urban setting, and a contrasting case examines the choice of enrollment option. Here, too, these studies examine the effectiveness of these programs. The conclusion reflects on the opportunities such innovations provide for researchers and assesses the importance of such research in shaping the innovations themselves through evaluations while they are in process.

Property Companies and the Construction Industry in Britain

Property Companies and the Construction Industry in Britain

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Smyth, Hedley / Robson, Brian / Ley, David, PUBLISHER: Cambridge University Press, This book was the first detailed and systematic account of the property and construction sectors of the British economy. Developing out of a materialist theoretical perspective, Dr Smyth provides an alternative explanation of the different characteristics of the two sectors and rejects traditional notions of the 'backwardness' of the construction sector. The specific historical experience of the Second World War and the rebuilding it necessitated, provides the basis of this analysis and it is argued that the particular divergencies of the construction sector stem from periods of wider economic crisis. Similar periods of crisis have shaped the property sector which, dependent upon the complex relationship between ground rent, the value of the building and building rent, cannot be understood in terms of 'urban rent'. Property companies and the construction industry in Britain challenges both established and radical thinking and its historical account of the development, management and production of the built environment in the years since addresses some of the central concerns of human geography today.

Darling Endangered

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Guess, Carol, PUBLISHER: Brooklyn Arts Press, Fiction. LGBT Studies. The voice narrating Carol Guess's newest book is that of a playfully effusive but meticulous cataloguer of our darker inquiries and oddities, a suburban former dancer with the inner life and vision of an epic librettist. DARLING ENDANGERED is nothing short of exceptional, a rare breed of hybrid that works between the "flash" of short fiction and the swift bite of the lyric. From the dizzying, battered nostalgia of youth remembered to the experiential trappings of maturity, Guess's collection maps the journey of a singular, sensitive existence through an ever-illuminating world of wayward hawks and track star meth addicts, avalanches and hot dog carts, zombie buildings, the works of Balanchine and Pachelbel, and the promises of love and love's disorders. Integrated Assessment of Ecosystem Health

Integrated Assessment of Ecosystem Health

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Scow, Kate M. / Scow, K. M., PUBLISHER: CRC Press, The new approach to ecosystem health is proactive. As a result, the scope of environmental studies is growing and the methods are evolving. Integrated Assessment of Ecosystem Health aggressively broadens the range of ecotoxicology to include its related fields. The book begins with John Cairns, Jr.'s predictions and recommendations for the future ecotoxicology: New goals must lead to new techniques.... the field of ecotoxicology is in the early stages of a major paradigm shift that is driven by three interrelated forces: 1) heightened interest in sustainable use of the planet, 2) protection of ecosystem, and 3) the shift from emphasis on avoiding deleterious effects to maintaining them in robust health. Later chapters explore the integration of data, intrinsic remediation studies and the ever- increasing number of associated disciplines that are improving our environmental potential. Methodology, itself, is considered as an evolving tool, always in need examination and revision. Cairns, and his co-authors all advocate a constructive, offensive new form of ecoscience. The consensus of scientists is clear: toxic threat and, especially, habitat destruction are the most important environmentl issues, today. The mandate from Integrated Assessment of Ecosystem Health is also decisive: expand the parameters of ecoscience. The future of life on earth depends upon our ability to grow and learn.

Austria and Other Margins: Reading Culture

Austria and Other Margins: Reading Culture

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Arens, Katherine, PUBLISHER: Camden House (NY), In this book Katherine Arens offers a series of case studies that redefine what 'reading culture' can mean in literary and cultural studies. The first part traces the ways in which authors borrow and rewrite literary traditions across national lines, in order to address problems in their own cultures' histories. In the second set of essays, Professor Arens illustrates how literature can cross other kinds of cultural boundaries, especially those between disciplines; for example, plotting a story as if it were on a stage allows Grillparzer to tell two simultaneous stories at odds with each other; and two artists interested in large-group art (Christo and Judy Chicago) manipulate their images as modernists to achieve different careers.

Leadership Succession

Leadership Succession

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Friedman, Stewart D., PUBLISHER: Transaction Publishers, This volume focuses on the most critical strategic activity in any organization, namely, who gets chosen to sit in the top echelon of the pyramid. Friedman argues that it is the quality of corporate leadership that will determine corporate winners and losers in the global competitive game. The stakes in leadership succession are high. The selection of key figures is the one human resource activity that no one belittles for being of secondary importance. Indeed, leadership succession is so important and central in many executive minds that it crowds out any other work. The succession process is often fraught with political intrigue, it lacks discipline, and excludes meaningful involvement of senior human resource executives. The contributors to this imaginative volume reveal a succession planning process that is frequently sloppy, superficial, and regularly sabotaged by senior management when they give it short shrift in terms of quality time. In addition, senior management often overrides sound decisions when it comes to filling key positions. The result is a lack of integrity throughout the human resource systems that eventually leads to a collapse of belief in the system and its governance. Noel M. Tichy, a leading figure in the studies of human resource management, has said, "Stewart Friedman is to be congratulated for a successful effort in providing a state of the art look at leadership succession. He] provides us with an empirical database of what is happening in U.S. corporations, helpful prescriptions for future improvement of leadership succession, and a realistic assessment of the human resource executive challenges in this area."

Koch supplies the only extant complete transcription of the annual three-course sequence on ethics Dewey gave at the University of Chicago from to . Koch argues that these lectures offer the best systematic, overall introduction to Dewey's approach to moral philosophy and are the only account showing the unity of his views in nearly all phases of ethical inquiry. These lectures are the only work by Dewey to set forth a complete theory of moral language. They offer a clear illustration of the central methodological questions in the development of a pragmatic instrumentalist ethic and the actual working out of the instrumentalist approach as distinct from simply presenting it as a conclusion.

Limits of Influence: Psychokinesis and the Philosophy of

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Braude, Stephen E., PUBLISHER: University Press of America, The Limits of Influence is a detailed examination and defense of the evidence for largescale-psychokinesis (PK). It examines the reasons why experimental evidence has not, and perhaps cannot, convince most skeptics that PK is genuine, and it considers why traditional experimental procedures are important to reveal interesting facts about the phenomena. It then examines why PK does not pose a clear threat to the very fabric of science, as many have supposed. The major skeptical challenges to taking large-scale PK seriously and the reason why those challenges are all unsatisfactory are considered. The evidence examined most closely is the turn-of-the-century evidence for physical mediumship, with special attention given to the cases of D.D. Home and Eusapia Palladino. The author compares and evaluates the leading theories of apparitions and considers the extent to which the evidence for collective apparitions can be interpreted as a further type of psychokinetic phenomenon. Finally, the claim that PK (and psychic functioning generally) might occur in refined and extensive forms is considered. It argues that this claim is not as outlandish as many have maintained and that we might have to accept something like the "magical" world view associated with so-called "primitive" societies.
