Contenuto: La famiglia Miniver, Kay casalinga, Clem architetto e i loro due figli più piccoli Judy e Toby, vivono in un tranquillo villaggio inglese sulle rive del Tamigi poco distante da Londra, il figlio maggiore Vin è studente a Oxford. Il villaggio è dominato dall'aristocratica Lady Beldon che mal sopporta la modernità e soprattutto il miscuglio tra classi sociali. Non sopporta infatti la nascente simpatia tra la nipote Carol e il giovane Vin. Lo scoppio della seconda guerra mondiale porta numerosi cambiamenti nella vita della famiglia come in quella del paese. Vin si arruola nella RAF mentre Clem fa parte del servizio di sorveglianza. Nell'estate del , mentre Clem assieme a molte altre imbarcazioni partecipa all'evacuazione delle forze militari inglesi bloccate a Dunkerque un aereo tedesco cade nelle vicinanze del villaggio. Il pilota sopravvive ed entra in casa Miniver, Kay mantiene il sangue freddo e riesce a consegnare il pilota alla polizia poco prima del rientro del marito. Lady Beldon vuole parlare con Kay, lei si oppone al matrimonio non per ragioni di classe ma solo per evitare alla nipote il dolore della perdita come era successo a lei in gioventù, era rimasta infatti vedova a 16 anni, pochi mesi dopo il matrimonio. Kay riesce però a convincerla che i giovani hanno diritto alla felicità, fosse anche di breve durata. Le incursioni aeree tedesche continuano senza sosta e la famiglia si vede costretta a passare quasi tutte le notti nei rifugi ma nonostante ciò il villaggio organizza l'annuale concorso floreale e per la prima volta Lady Beldon ha un avversario: il signor Ballard capostazione ha infatti creato una nuova rosa dandole il nome signora Miniver che risulta essere la vincitrice. Dopo aver accompagnato Vin al suo reparto l'auto che porta Kay e Carol a casa viene colpita da un attacco aereo e la giovane rimane uccisa. Tutto il villaggio si riunisce nella chiesa semidistrutta per il funerale e il pastore pronuncia un accorato sermone esortando a continuare la lotta per la pace e la libertà. The Celebration of Scandal analyzes the urban fiction of both well-known novelists (Dickens, Gissing, James, and Meredith) and more marginal writers (Disraeli and Bulwer-Lytton) in terms of their representations of the city, both the scandalous and the sublime. It also includes a discussion of the dandy novels of Catherine Gore, whose parodies of high life are virtually unknown to modern readers. Bernstein explores the scandals lying at the heart of the representation of the city in Victorian fiction. Social scandals--slums that belie the myths of urban progress, for instance--are only intensified by methods of representation that overturn mimetic conventions. But if one pole of this study is the scandal, then its opposite is the sublime. Bernstein examines the parodic mode of the dandy and moves to the serious urban sublime that records urban experience in its ambiguity, its narcissism, its negativity, and its strength. Bernstein then discusses fictional and nonfictional urban sketches that present many of the problems facing urban artists in their encounters with the city. She stakes out new territory, blending the work of major critics of Victorian literature (Steven Marcus, Hillis Miller, etc.), lesser-known nineteenth-century urban texts, and a substantial dosage of Continental materials, ranging from the crucial work of Baudelaire and his great expositor, Walter Benjamin, to theorists such as Freud, Bakhtin, Foucault, Barthes, and Lacan.

Dopo una segnalazione concitata ci siamo recate sul posto, per la precisione sul piazzale della stazione di servizio sulla SS 16, che un tempo portava il nome di Carol, e Carola è il nome che abbiamo voluto dare alla mammina! L'abbiamo presa con noi, le abbiamo curato le ferite sul corpo e nell'anima e le abbiamo riservato un posto sicuro per farle portare a termine la sua gravidanza. Dopo due settimane....il miracolo di veder nascere i suoi CUCCIOLI PREZIOSI: 4 maschietti e 2 femminucce. A DISTANZA DI DUE MESI DA QUELL'EMOZIONANTE MOMENTO, ECCOLI BELLISSIMI E PRONTI PER ESSERE ADOTTATI DA QUALCUNO CHE NON FARA' MAI MANCAR LORO L'AMORE E LA PROTEZIONE CHE SOLO I CORAGGIOSI SANNO DARE.......PER SEMPRE!!! This book tells the story of Havens from the perspective of what it is, of the present in all of its complexity, and as a window on what might exist in the future in this border community. It begins with a description of Havens and its inevitable interdependence with its Mexican neighbors, followed by an introduction of three cultural mediators--two students and one teacher from Havens High School. Focusing on the relationship between the use of Spanish and English, the language landscape in the community and in the schools is laid out. This is followed by a specific description of the development of bilingual education programs in the district, and an introduction of the social structure of the high school, describing the students' interactions across cultural lines. The final chapter presents an alternative metaphor for thinking about the border and identifies markers of opportunity that already exist in Havens as it works toward defining what it means to be a bicultural and binational community.
