His first children's book, "1,2,3 to the Zoo" () was an immediate success and his second, "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" () brought him international acclaim and has established itself as a modern classic. He and his wife now live in northern Massachusetts. A simpler version of "Papa, Please Get the Moon for Me" was written by Mr. Carle a number of years ago for his daughter Cirsten, who found it both heartening and inspiring.
