ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Weller, Sheila, PUBLISHER: Washington Square Press, A groundbreaking and irresistible biography of three of America's most important musical artists -- Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and Carly Simon -- charts their lives as women at a magical moment in time. Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and Carly Simon remain among the most enduring and important women in popular music. Each woman is distinct. Carole King is the product of outer-borough, middle-class New York City; Joni Mitchell is a granddaughter of Canadian farmers; and Carly Simon is a child of the Manhattan intellectual upper crust. They collectively represent, in their lives and their songs, a great swath of American girls who came of age in the late s. Their stories trace the arc of the now mythic sixties generation -- female version -- but in a bracingly specific and deeply recalled way, far from cliche. The history of the women of that generation has never been written -- until now, through their resonant lives and emblematic songs. Filled with the voices of many dozens of these women's intimates, who are speaking in these pages for the first time, this alternating biography reads like a novel -- except it's all true, and the heroines are famous and beloved. Sheila Weller captures the character of each woman and gives a balanced portrayal enriched by a wealth of new information. "Girls Like Us" is an epic treatment of midcentury women who dared to break tradition and become what none had been before them -- confessors in song, rock superstars, and adventurers of heart and soul.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Miller, Kerby A., PUBLISHER: Oxford University Press, USA, The first "translantic" history of the Irish, Emigrants and Exiles promises to become a landmark in our understanding of this important emigration movement. From the early s to the early s, no fewer than seven million people emigrated from Ireland to north America. This vast flow amounted to much more than mere numbers: it at once reflected and compelled enormous social changes on both sides of the Atlantic. Emigrants and Exiles chronicles the momentous causes of the Irish emigration and its far-reaching impact--on the people themselves, on the land they left behind, and on the new one they came to. Drawing on enormous original research, Kerby Miller focuses on the thought and behavior of the "ordinary" Irish emigrants, Catholic and Protestant, as revealed in their personal letters, diaries, journals and memoirs as well as in their songs, poems, and folklore. He finds that while many were eager newcomers to "the land of promise," many more saw themselves as involuntary "exiles" who had been forced to leave Ireland by cruel fate or British oppression. The exile mentality, Miller shows, was deeply rooted in Irish history, culture, and personality, and it profoundly affected the traumatic course of modern Irish history even as it shaped the Irish-American experience in very particular ways. The impressive scope of Miller's work embraces all the successive waves of Irish emigration, and he fills the book with rich human detail. About the Author:Kerby A. Miller is Associate Professor of History at the University of Missouri, Columbia.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Mike Tangunu Ndimunkum, Tangunu Ndimunkum, PUBLISHER: Authorhouse, If you want to know what it really means to live in a country where equality of condition is so widespread, where the common people actually rule themselves, and where the person living in the White House is a black son of a Kenyan man- read this book. Because we can board an airplane and be everywhere in the world in a few hours, because doctors can put eight babies into a woman's womb or open a man's chest and repair his heart's damaged arteries, because wireless communications have reduced the once wide world into a tiny digital village...it is natural to conclude, and rightly so, that the age of American "superpowership" has superseded the creative thinking skills of all civilizations and ages that came before us. The inherent attitude of every American to better his own condition is so powerful that it is alone, and without any assistance, not only had carried on their society to wealth and prosperity, but had surmounted the complexities of new discoveries and landed man on the moon. Americans are natural risk and responsibility takers: stemming from their willingness to go out with the hope of making or doing something that no one had ever done before. That is what this book is about, exposing the true genius of America so that every nation and people can learn from it and prosper, too. The more you get from The Greatness of America the more you will become great.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Watts, Meredith W. / Fischer, Arthur / Fuchs, Werner, PUBLISHER: Praeger, Systematic research on the changing experience and social and political characteristics of German youth has been carried out in the Federal Republic of Germany on an ongoing basis since the early s. Until now, however, the results of these long-term studies have not been made available in English. Six volumes of this research--including new analyses prepared especially for this book--are distilled in the present work, which offers a comprehensive and focused portrait of German youth of succeeding postwar generations from to the present. Following an introductory survey of the scope and themes addressed in the study, the authors highlight the contrasting experiences of youth of the s and those who came of age soon after the end of World War II. They examine the fundamental constituents of youth as a developmental period, with particular reference to changes in the recent era. Attitudinal scales are developed and applied to assessments of variations in social and political orientation among generations and between distinct subgroups of contemporary youth. Differences between young women in the early postwar period and the "alternative era" of the s and s are explored. Focusing on "views of the future," the final chapter looks at the diversity of lifestyles that has become characteristic of youth over the last decade and at the increasing differentiation between generations. Providng a wealth of new material on an important body of research, this book makes a substantial contribution to the study of youth in advanced industrialized nations. An appropriate resource for courses or studies in various disciplines in sociology, geography, political science, and socialhistory.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Loepp, Daniel, PUBLISHER: University of Michigan Press, Like national politicians, state legislators all too often focus on partisanship instead of policy making, engaging themselves in rancorous debate that achieves little beyond gridlock. However, during one short period in Michigan's history, legislators stopped bickering and focused on forging compromise. Daniel Loepp's "Sharing the Balance of Power" chronicles the 87th Michigan Legislature (), in which Republicans and Democrats successfully shared power. In , Michigan voters elected exactly fifty-five Republicans and fifty-five Democrats to the state house. As a result, the two parties each elected a co-speaker, and a shared power agreement was forged. Given the history of intense partisanship in the state house, political pundits predicted that any plan for shared power would disintegrate within months. What resulted instead was one of the most productive legislatures in Michigan history. Author Daniel Loepp, chief of staff to Democratic Co-Speaker Curtis Hertel at the time, skillfully takes the reader "inside" the State Capitol, examining the key policy debates (including school finance reform), important personalities, and difficult negotiations. Loepp's balanced presentation is testimony to the two years of bi-partisan cooperation in which he took part. In an age of public cynicism about the legislative process, Daniel Loepp offers the reader a refreshing story about two co-speakers and their 108 colleagues who came together in the spirit of bi-partisan representation to successfully serve their constituents, the people of Michigan. Daniel Loepp is a partner in the firm of Karoub Associates, Michigan's oldest multi-client lobbying firm.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Lipking, Lawrence I., PUBLISHER: Harvard University Press, He was a servant to the public, a writer for hire. He was a hero, an author adding to the glory of his nation. But can a writer be both hack and hero? The career of Samuel Johnson, recounted here by Lawrence Lipking, proves that the two can be one. And it further proves, in its enduring interest for readers, that academic fashions today may be a bit hasty in pronouncing the "death of the author." A book about the life of an author, about how an author is made, not born, Lipking's "Samuel Johnson" is the story of the man as he lived--and lives--in his work. Tracing Johnson's rocky climb from anonymity to fame, in the course of which he came to stand for both the greatness of English literature and the good sense of the common reader, the book shows how this life transformed the very nature of authorship. Beginning with the defiant letter to Chesterfield that made Johnson a celebrity, "Samuel Johnson" offers fresh readings of all the writer's major works, viewed through the lens of two ongoing preoccupations: the urge to do great deeds--and the sense that bold expectations are doomed to disappointment. Johnson steers between the twin perils of ambition and despondency. Mounting a challenge to the emerging industry that glorified and capitalized on Shakespeare, he stresses instead the playwright's power to cure the illusions of everyday life. All Johnson's works reveal his extraordinary sympathy with ordinary people. In his groundbreaking "Dictionary," in his poems and essays, and in" The Lives of the English Poets," we see Johnson becoming the key figure in the culture of literacy that reaches from his day to our own.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Hills, Kathleen, PUBLISHER: Poisoned Pen Press, A grizzled Lake Superior fisherman with a massive allergy to bees dies very early one morning alone on his boat. Was he stung to death? John McIntire, retired from a career in military intelligence and striving to regain a place in his boyhood home after 30 years away, is serving as township constable. He questions the easy verdict. The town of St. Adele has little experience with violent death -- or murder. Nor does McIntire, despite fighting in two world wars. Worse, all the suspects are friends and neighbors, men and women he grew up with "talking Swede." The dead man, last of a Norwegian family who came to raise apples in the struggling rural township sandwiched between the Huron Mountains of Michigan's Upper Peninsula and the southern shore of Lake Superior, had no real enemies despite his gruff temper. And he had little to leave aside from a heavily mortgaged boat. So, who wanted to kill him? Saddened by violence striking Utopia, worried his British bride might cut and run, his task complicated by taciturn witnesses and six party telephone lines, the naturally humorous McIntire, while bringing a murderer to justice, struggles to evolve a new perspective on a rural community he has idealized for three decades. Rich in magnificent landscape, vivid characters stepping from a past both thoroughly Midwestern and multi-ethnic, and a secret-laden story, filled with laughter and warm insights, Past Imperfect offers a new voice of great promise reminiscent of the debuts of Steve Hamilton, A Cold Day in Paradise, and William Kent Krueger, Iron Lake.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Suleiman, Rubin / Suleiman, Susan Rubin, PUBLISHER: University of Nebraska Press, Can you forget the place you once called home? What does it take to make you recapture it? In this moving memoir, Susan Rubin Suleiman describes her returns to the city of her birth--where she speaks the language like a native but with an accent. Suleiman left Budapest in as a young child with her parents, fleeing communism; thirty-five years later, she returned with her two sons from a brief vacation and began to remember her childhood. Her earliest memories, of Nazi persecution in the final year of World War II, came back to her in fragments, as did memories of her first school years after the war of the stormy marriage between her father, a brilliant Talmudic scholar, and her mother, a cosmopolitan woman from a more secular Jewish family. In , after the fall of communism and the death of her mother, Suleiman returned to Budapest for six-month stay. She recounts her ongoing quest for personal history, interweaving it with the stories of present-day Hungarians struggling to make sense of the changes in their individual and collective lives. Suleiman's search for documents relating to her childhood, the lives of her parents and their families, and the Jewish communities of Hungary and Poland takes her on a series of fascinating journeys within and outside Budapest. Emerging from this eloquent, often suspenseful diary is the portrait of an intellectual who recaptures her past and comes into contact with the vital, troubling world of contemporary Eastern Europe. Suleiman's vivid descriptions of her encounters with a proud, old city and its people in a time of historical change remind us that every life story is at once unique and part of a larger history.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Gliboff, Sander, PUBLISHER: MIT Press (MA), The German translation of Darwin's "The Origin of Species" appeared in , just months after the original, thanks to Heinrich Georg Bronn, a distinguished German paleontologist whose work in some ways paralleled Darwin's. Bronn's version of the book (with his own notes and commentary appended) did much to determine how Darwin's theory was understood and applied by German biologists, for the translation process involved more than the mere substitution of German words for English. In this book, Sander Gliboff tells the story of how "The Origin of Species" came to be translated into German, how it served Bronn's purposes as well as Darwin's, and how it challenged German scholars to think in new ways about morphology, systematics, paleontology, and other biological disciplines. Gliboff traces Bronn's influence on German Darwinism through the early career of Ernst Haeckel, Darwin's most famous nineteenth-century proponent and popularizer in Germany, who learned his Darwinism from the Bronn translation. Gliboff argues, contrary to most interpretations, that the German authors were not attempting to "tame" Darwin or assimilate him to outmoded systems of romantic "Naturphilosophie." Rather, Bronn and Haeckel were participants in Darwin's project of revolutionizing biology. We should not, Gliboff cautions, read pre-Darwinian meanings into Bronn's and Haeckel's Darwinian words. Gliboff describes interpretive problems faced by Bronn and Haeckel that range from the verbal (how to express Darwin's ideas in the existing German technical vocabulary) to the conceptual. One of these conceptual problems, the origins of novel variation and the proper balance between creativity and constraint in evolution, emerges as crucial. Specialists in evolutionary biology today, Gliboff points out, continue to grapple with comparable questions--continuing a larger process of translation and interpretation of Darwin's work.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Hayes, Christopher, PUBLISHER: Crown Publishing Group (NY), A powerful and original argument that traces the roots of our present crisis of authority to an unlikely source: the meritocracy. Over the past decade, Americans watched in bafflement and rage as one institution after another - from Wall Street to Congress, the Catholic Church to corporate America, even Major League Baseball - imploded under the weight of corruption and incompetence. In the wake of the Fail Decade, Americans have historically low levels of trust in their institutions; the social contract between ordinary citizens and elites lies in tatters. How did we get here? With "Twilight of the Elites," Christopher Hayes offers a radically novel answer. Since the s, as the meritocracy elevated a more diverse group of men and women into power, they learned to embrace the accelerating inequality that had placed them near the very top. Their ascension heightened social distance and spawned a new American elite--one more prone to failure and corruption than any that came before it. Mixing deft political analysis, timely social commentary, and deep historical understanding, "Twilight of the Elites" describes how the society we have come to inhabit - utterly forgiving at the top and relentlessly punitive at the bottom - produces leaders who are out of touch with the people they have been trusted to govern. Hayes argues that the public's failure to trust the federal government, corporate America, and the media has led to a crisis of authority that threatens to engulf not just our politics but our day-to-day lives. Upending well-worn ideological and partisan categories, Hayes entirely reorients our perspective on our times. "Twilight of the Elites" is the defining work of social criticism for the post-bailout age.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Schaeffer, Brenda, PUBLISHER: Hazelden, In this celebratory book, Dr. Schaeffer transports us beyond her best-seller, "Is It Love or Is It Addiction? "and makes clear that love is not an addiction. But "what is love?" Exploring the pain, perils and pitfalls of relationships in our time, grounding herself in extensive clinical experience with love addiction and other disorders of loving, she cracks the mystery of love wide open. Through an enlightened series of "Memos from Love," that came to her in quiet meditation, the book became much greater than her original vision and took on a life of its own. "Love's Way "soars beyond psychology to become the first guide to modern love that does full justice to the power, beauty, mystery, and omnipresence of love itself. With compassion, it reminds us how trauma, betrayal, and the loss of innocence leave our hearts raw, wounded and closed to a love that is right at our fingertips. Love speaks to us directly in this book, and its voice is strong. Besides telling us what love is and is not, love offers body, ego, soul and spirit challenging assignments that assure a vibrant love life and walk us into the 21st Century. Chock-full of modern insight, ancient wisdom, and stories and poems that range from consulting room accounts to the ecstatic songs of Rumi, "Love's Way," will convince readers that whether or not they are in a relationship, they are definitely "in love"-already caught up in love's transforming power. Exercises at the end of this philosophical and profoundly satisfying book add the practical element needed to take love to the streets. For people who have become disconnected from the joys of the heart, this phenomenal book by Brenda Schaeffer is a must read.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Weissman, Steven, PUBLISHER: Fantagraphics Books, Cruel has never been so cute and funny as in the hands of the "Yikes" gang. Steven Weissman's "Yikes" comics and characters are some of the most adorable and idiosyncratic cartoon creations in print today--beloved by the masses and the cognoscenti alike. Over the last decade, readers have been delighted by such strange and hilariously cruel books as "Don't Call Me Stupid, Champs, White Flower Day," and "Chewing Gum In Church," Like Huckleberry Finn, Mickey Mouse, and Hannibal Lecter before them, his characters--Li'l Bloody, the Pullapart Boy, Kid Medusa, X-Ray Spence, and "Sweet" Chubby Cheeks (just to name a few)--have affixed themselves in our collective cultural imagination. Indeed, it's hard to recall a time when they weren't a part of our lives, hustling about "Milltown," perfectly drawn and perfectly awful. The cast seemed to appear fully formed by the end of the s, and ready for their "close up." Every success story has its humble--or arrogant and mean-spirited--beginnings, and now Fantagraphics Books is tickled pink to present "Mean," collecting Weissman's early, self-published, unpublished, and otherwise rare "Yikes" comics. Enjoy your favorite characters' awkward, embarrassing first appearances; watch them stumble from their early, crude glory into their mature sadistic and masochistic selves. Li'l Bloody and the Pullapart Boy steal candy, X-Ray Spence answers his fan mail, and Kid Medusa falls in love (twice). Early critical attention, while overwhelmingly positive, often questioned what Weissman "was on" when he came up with these odd tales of young friendship. Read "Mean" and guess for yourself.

And the list of excuses is extensive. Some said they didn't have dictionaries, and others said that they did not have the words they were supposed to look up.""Today was a stressful day. If there ever was a day that I just wanted to hurry up and get over, it was today. I have seven students who are on IEP's, three of which take medication; and oh when their medication does not work ""Today was a better day than yesterday. I find that I have a lot of control over the emotional atmosphere of the class. The students seem to respond to my feelings. The emotions I display, determine the emotions they display. Sometimes this can be good, other times this can be bad.""I had to keep encouraging them and motivating them to learn it. When they were ugly towards me, I told them that I loved them, and that I am willing to struggle with them through this if they are willing to patiently learnA a A] then] there came a point when they were completely silent and their on-task behavior was so intoxicating that I did not want them to leave.""When someone comes into your life that you love, it's hard to let them go, and it's hard to forget about them. I guess that's part of the reason why I have a shield up often times, because I know they will leave. I know they won't remain in my life. Even though this true, I love these kids, they have changed my life. I will never be the same after this."
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Keaton, Diane, PUBLISHER: Random House, ""Mom loved adages, quotes, slogans. There were always little reminders pasted on the kitchen wall. For example, the word THINK. I found THINK thumbtacked on a bulletin board in her darkroom. I saw it Scotch-taped on a pencil box she'd collaged. I even found a pamphlet titled THINK on her bedside table. Mom liked to THINK."" So begins Diane Keaton's unforgettable memoir about her mother and herself. In it you will meet the woman known to tens of millions as "Annie Hall, " but you will also meet, and fall in love with, her mother, the loving, complicated, always thinking Dorothy Hall. To write about herself, Diane realized she had to write about her mother, too, and how their bond came to define both their lives. And so, in a remarkable act of creation, Diane not only reveals herself to us, she also lets us meet in intimate detail her mother. Throughout her life, Dorothy kept eighty-five journals--literally thousands of pages--in which she wrote about her marriage, her children, and, most probingly, about herself. Dorothy also recorded memorable stories about Diane's grandparents. Diane has sorted through all these pages to paint an unflinching portrait of her mother--a woman restless with intellectual and creative energy struggling to find an outlet for her talents--as well as her entire family, recounting a story that spans four generations and nearly a hundred years. More than just the autobiography of a legendary actress, "Then Again" is a book about a very American family with very American dreams. Diane will remind you of yourself, and her bonds with her family will remind you of your own relationships with those you love the most.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Aaronovitch, David, PUBLISHER: Riverhead Books, An absorbing, probing look at the conspiracy theories that operate on the sidelines of history and the reasons they continue to play such a seditious role, from an award-winning journalist. Our age is obsessed by the idea of conspiracy. We see it everywhere- from Pearl Harbor to 9/11, from the assassination of Kennedy to the death of Diana. In this age of terrorism we live in, the role of conspiracy is a serious one, one that can fuel radical or fringe elements to violence. For David Aaronovitch, there came a time when he started to see a pattern among these inflammatory theories. these theories used similarly murky methods with which to insinu?ate their claims: they linked themselves to the supposed conspiracies of the past (it happened then so it can happen now); they carefully manipulated their evidence to hide its holes; they relied on the authority of dubious aca?demic sources. Most important, they elevated their believers to membership of an elite- a group of people able to see beyond lies to a higher reality. But why believe something that entails stretching the bounds of probabil?ity so far? Surely it is more likely that men did actually land on the moon in than that thousands of people were enlisted to fabricate an elaborate hoax. In this entertaining and enlightening book -aimed at providing ammunition for those who have found themselves at the wrong end of a conversation about moon landings or the twin towers-Aaronovitch carefully probes and explodes a dozen of the major conspiracy theories. In doing so, he examines why people believe them, and makes an argument for a true skepticism: one based on a thorough knowledge of history and a strong dose of common sense.
