ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Ben-Zaken, Avner, PUBLISHER: Johns Hopkins University Press, Avner Ben-Zaken reconsiders the fundamental question of how early modern scientific thought traveled between Western and Eastern cultures in the age of the so-called Scientific Revolution. Through five meticulously researched case studies -- in which he explores how a single obscure object or text moved in the Eastern world -- Ben-Zaken reveals the intricate ways that scientific knowledge moved across cultures. With detective-like persistence, he traces the eastward circulation of post-Copernican cosmologies and scientific discoveries, showing how these ideas were translated, transformed, and adapted to local cultures. Never before has a student of scientific traffic in the Mediterranean taken such pains to see precisely which instruments, books, and ideas first appeared where, in whose hands, by what means, and with what implications. In doing so, Ben-Zaken challenges accepted views of Western primacy in this fruitful exchange. He shows not only how Islamic cultures benefited from European scientific knowledge but also how Eastern understanding of classical Greek texts informed developments in the West. Ben-Zaken's mastery of different cultures and languages uniquely positions him to tell this intriguing story. His findings reshape our understanding of scientific discourse in this critical period and contribute to the growing field of cross-cultural Christian-Muslim studies.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Givner, Joan, PUBLISHER: Thistledown Press, Anne "Tenn" Tennyson Miller's adventure begins during an ordinary ferry trip, but reality soon melts away as Tenn is transported to the fantasy land of Greensward. When she arrives in Greensward, Tenn is elected to rescue her new friend, Una, who has been spirited away to a nearby country occupied by evil forces determined to destroy the harmony of Greensward. Before she sets out on her dangerous mission she is trained by the wise woman, Bethan, who understands the enemy's weaknesses and offers Tenn resources and information that can help her on her mission. Once in enemy territory she uses Bethan's supplies and teachings, as well as her own keen memory and wealth of knowledge, to sustain her quest. She is eventually successful in finding Una but then discovers that there are many other children who must also be saved and returned to Greensward. This classic fantasy quest from established YA author Joan Givner takes young readers on an adventure written in the British tradition, fused with a contemporary voice. Givner alludes to the work of Tennyson, as "Tenn" loves poetry, story and rhyme; in fact it will be her love of great writers that helps her in her quest and leads her to success.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Harvey, Andrew / Hamut, Eryk / Hanut, Eryk, PUBLISHER: Putnam Publishing Group, Son of Man is both a celebration of the mystical Christ and a practical guidebook to contacting Christ and experiencing what St. Paul called "the glorious liberty of the children of God". The New York Times recently wrote, "The spirit that moves Andrew Harvey is gaining him literary acclaim". In his long-awaited major new book, Son of Man, Harvey explores the sacred feminine aspects of Jesus. He explains that Christ came to help release humanity from all bonds of false authority and to reveal to people their own divine identity, thereby awakening all to the freedom, dignity, and joy that is within them. In the second section, Harvey offers transformative ways of realizing the power of Christ. These practices are drawn from the early Christian traditions of mantra, medieval mystic devotional practices, the vision of prayer of Teresa of Avila, and based upon the author's own experiences of the meditation and visualization practices of Hinduism, Sufism, and Tibetan Buddhism. A section of meditations and readings at the end -- including recently discovered Gnostic gospels -- complete the readers full experience in the mystical Christ. A beautiful volume of text and photographs, Son of Man will help us enter into a union with Christ as he becomes the "source and principle of divine life" (Thomas Merton) within us. Index. Bibliography.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Guskin, Jane / Wilson, David / Yamamoto, Eric K., PUBLISHER: New York University Press, The United States in the twenty-first century will be a nation of so-called minorities. Shifts in the composition of the American populace necessitate a radical change in the ways we as a nation think about race relations, identity, and racial justice. Once dominated by black-white relations, discussions of race are increasingly informed by an awareness of strife among nonwhite racial groups. While white influence remains important in nonwhite racial conflict, the time has come for acknowledgment of ways communities of color sometimes clash, and their struggles to heal the resulting wounds and forge strong alliances. Melding race history, legal theory, theology, social psychology, and anecdotes, Eric K. Yamamoto offers a fresh look at race and responsibility. He tells tales of explosive conflicts and halting conciliatory efforts between African Americans and Korean and Vietnamese immigrant shop owners in Los Angeles and New Orleans. He also paints a fascinating picture of South Africa's controversial Truth and Reconciliation Commission as well as a pathbreaking Asian American apology to Native Hawaiians for complicity in their oppression. An incisive and original work by a highly respected scholar, Interracial Justice greatly advances our understanding of conflict and healing through justice in multiracial America.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Friedman, Lester D., PUBLISHER: Rutgers University Press, A smug glance at the seventies-the so-called "Me Decade"-unveils a kaleidoscope of big hair, blaring music, and broken politics-all easy targets for satire, cynicism, and ultimately even nostalgia. American Cinema of the s, however, looks beyond the strobe lights to reveal how profoundly the seventies have influenced American life and how the films of that decade represent a peak moment in cinema history. Far from a placid era, the seventies was a decade of social upheavals. Events such as the killing of students at Kent State and Jackson State universities, the Watergate investigations, the legalization of abortion, and the end of the American involvement in Vietnam are only a few among the many landmark occurrences that challenged the foundations of American culture. The director-driven movies of this era reflect this turmoil, experimenting with narrative structures, offering a gallery of scruffy antiheroes, and revising traditional genre conventions. Bringing together ten original essays, American Cinema of the s examines the range of films that marked the decade, including Jaws, Rocky, Love Story, Shaft, Dirty Harry, The Godfather, Deliverance, The Exorcist, Shampoo, Taxi Driver, Star Wars, Saturday Night Fever, Kramer vs. Kramer, and Apocalypse Now. Lester D. Friedman is the Senior Scholar-in-Residence in the Media and Society Program at Hobart and William Smith Colleges and the author of numerous books on film.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Fukuoka, Masanobu / Korn, Larry / Lappe, Frances Moore, PUBLISHER: New York Review of Books, Call it "Zen and the Art of Farming" or a "Little Green Book," Masanobu Fukuoka's manifesto about farming, eating, and the limits of human knowledge presents a radical challenge to the global systems we rely on for our food. At the same time, it is a spiritual memoir of a man whose innovative system of cultivating the earth reflects a deep faith in the wholeness and balance of the natural world. As Wendell Berry writes in his preface, the book "is valuable to us because it is at once practical and philosophical. It is an inspiring, necessary book about agriculture because it is not just about agriculture." Trained as a scientist, Fukuoka rejected both modern agribusiness and centuries of agricultural practice, deciding instead that the best forms of cultivation mirror nature's own laws. Over the next three decades he perfected his so-called "do-nothing" technique: commonsense, sustainable practices that all but eliminate the use of pesticides, fertilizer, tillage, and perhaps most significantly, wasteful effort. Whether you're a guerrilla gardener or a kitchen gardener, dedicated to slow food or simply looking to live a healthier life, you will find something here--you may even be moved to start a revolution of your own.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Olinyk, Gregory, PUBLISHER: Morgan James Publishing, When our nation was first founded, a largely illiterate American citizenry chose the best educated person in their town to represent them at their state or territory capital, and then picked the smartest ones from that group to represent their best interests in our nation's capital. That once-effective system worked well for a time but, like any organization, it eventually fell prey to bureaucracy, growth for growth's sake, and a conflict-of-interest derived from the fact that it became so prohibitively expensive to become elected and to remain in office that our representatives can no longer realistically represent us because they are beholden to whomever writes the checks that keep them in power. Thus, our government has grown into a labyrinthine, bureaucratic "rat's nest" of convoluted processes, make-work and influence peddling - or as the humorist Will Rogers put it, "the best government money can buy." ResoNation provides a means for We-the-People to drag our governmental processes out of "smoke-filled back rooms" and into the bright light of day where we can take our country back from the military-industrial complex, restore our standing in the international community, and markedly improve our economic lot via something called The DayLight Movement. we won't get fooled again.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Bronk, William / Canade, Eugene G., PUBLISHER: North Point Press, "This is an utterly compelling, harrowing and masterfully written body of poetry. Its publication is a major literary event". -- The Los Angeles Times Book Review The original edition of Life Supports, published in , was greeted as one of the most significant literary works to appear in this country. Cited by The New York Times Book Review, as "one of our finest... poets", Bronk went on to win the American Book Award and a reputation, in the words of Kirkus Reviews, as "one of the most solid and unfrivolous poets". Since then, there have been nine additional books, including a volume of collected essays Vectors and Smoothable Curves, which the Los Angeles Times called "the products of a unified sensibility in the tradition of our most original prose stylists". Among writers of his generation, few are as esteemed by those who require the highest standards for the books they read. Bronk's "rare gift" as an essay in the Voice Literary Supplement recently argued, "is the ability to float difficult truths on fleeting snatches of spoken breath". Bronk, according to Compound Eye, "is one of America's greatest living poets". According to poet and critic Michael Heller, he is "one of our modern masters". The new edition of Life Supports makes available once again one of the principal literary works of our time.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Centner, Terence J., PUBLISHER: University of Illinois Press, Over the past century American agriculture has shifted dramatically, with small, commercial farms finding it increasingly difficult to compete with large-scale (mostly indoor) animal feeding operations (AFOs). In this book, Terence J. Centner investigates the environmental, social, economic, and political impact of the rise of the so-called factory farm, exposing the ramifications of the contemporary trend toward industrial-scale food production. Just as Rachel Carson's landmark Silent Spring used the disappearance of songbirds as a jumping-off point for a work that raised public awareness of pesticides' devastating environmental impact, Empty Pastures sees the dwindling numbers of livestock in the American countryside as a symptom of a broader transformation, one with serious consequences for the rural landscape and its inhabitants--animal as well as human. After outlining the rise of the AFO, Centner examines the troubling consequences of consolidation in animal farming and suggests a number of remedies. The issues he tackles include groundwater contamination, the loss of biodiversity, animal welfare, concentrated odors and other nuisances, soil erosion, and the economic effects of the disappearance of the small family farm. Inspired by largely abandoned traditional practices rather than a radical and unrealistic vision of a return to an idealized past, Centner proposes a series of pragmatic reforms for regulating factory farms to halt ecological degradation and revitalize rural communities. ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Lieu, Jocelyn, PUBLISHER: Graywolf Press, "First to fade were the names, then the faces, until she ""couldn't be sure the people once called family ever really ""existed. Sometimes, when she wandered through Chinatown, she wondered whether this middle-aged man or that young mother with the sullen girl was related to her. Relatives. Strangers. There was no way to know."In this vivid, elegantly written debut, Jocelyn Lieu explores the risks of self-discovery. The characters in "Potential Weapons" lead bi-cultural lives, their ethnicity not obvious at first glance. What are you anyway? someone asks. But it is only when cultures clash, when memory is forced into the present moment, that this question can begin to be answered. In the title story, Abi, a young Chinese American woman, attends a Klan rally, in protest, with her white mother. Once there, they are stripped of all "potential weapons," including her mother's cane. Diana visits the home of her lover's parents, Holocaust survivors: the mystery of cultural difference and the haunting music of Gulf War TV coverage permeate the encounter. Through a chance meeting in New York's Chinatown, Mar discovers her estranged Aunt Pearl, who turns out to be the family's most intriguing secret, a link to a past colored by the struggle to survive.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Doogan, Kevin, PUBLISHER: Polity Press, In this stimulating and highly original work, Kevin Doogan looks at contemporary social transformation through the lens of the labour market. Major themes of the day -- globalization, technological change and the new economy, the pension and demographic timebombs, flexibility and traditional employment -- are all subject to critical scrutiny. We are often told that a new global economy has emerged which has transformed our lives. It is argued that the pace of technological change, the mobility of multinational capital and the privatization of the welfare state have combined to create a more precarious world. Companies are outsourcing, jobs are migrating to China and India, and a job for life is said to be a thing of the past. The so-called 'new capitalism' is said to be the result of these profound changes. Kevin Doogan takes issue with these widely-accepted ideas and subjects the transformation of work to detailed examination through a comprehensive analysis of developments in Europe and North America. He argues that precariousness is not a natural consequence of this fast-changing world; rather, current insecurities are manufactured, emanating from government policy and the greater exposure of the economy to market forces. New Capitalism? The Transformation of Work is sure to stimulate academic debate. Kevin Doogan's account will appeal not just to scholars, but also to upper-level students across the social sciences, including the sociology of work, industrial relations, globalization, economics, social policy and business studies
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Helpman, Elhanan, PUBLISHER: MIT Press (MA), Traditionally, economists have considered the accumulation of conventional inputs such as labor and capital to be the primary force behind economic growth. Now, however, many macroeconomists place technological progress at the center of the growth process. This shift is due to new theoretical developments that allow researchers to link microeconomic aspects of the innovation process with macroeconomic outcomes. Most economists have viewed technological progress as an incremental process. A few have focused on the role of drastic innovations--those that introduce a discontinuity. The contributors to this volume are concerned with the type of drastic innovation called general purpose technologies (GPTs). A GPT has the potential to affect the entire economic system and can lead to far-reaching changes in such social factors as working hours and constraints on family life. Examples of GPTs are the steam engine, electricity, and the computer. The study of GPTs is relatively new. A universal theoretical framework for dealing with GPTs does not yet exist. The essays in this book both further our understanding of GPT-driven economic growth and lay the foundation for further developments of the available frameworks.Contributors Philippe Aghion, Ciff Bekar, Timothy Bresnahan, Kenneth Carlaw, Alfonso Gambardella, Richard G. ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Benjamin, Walter / Adorno, Theodor Wiesengrund / Scholem, Gershom Gerhard, PUBLISHER: University of Chicago Press, Called "the most important critic of his time" by Hannah Arendt, Walter Benjamin has emerged as one of the most compelling thinkers of our time as well, his work assuming a crucial place in current debates over the interactions of art, culture, and meaning. A "natural and extraordinary talent for letter writing was one of the most captivating facets of his nature," writes Gershom Scholem in his Foreword; and indeed, Benjamin's correspondence reveals the evolution of some of his most powerful ideas. Published here in English for the first time, these letters offer an intimate picture of Benjamin himself and the times in which he lived. Written in a day when letters were an important vehicle for the presentation and development of intellectual matters, Benjamin's correspondence is rich in insight into the circumstances behind his often difficult work. Writing at length to Scholem and Theodor Adorno, and exchanging letters with Rainer Maria Rilke, Hannah Arendt, Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Max Horkheimer, Max Brod, Bertolt Brecht, and Kafka's friend Felix Weltsch, Benjamin elaborates his ideas about metaphor and language. He reflects on literary figures from Kafka to Karl Kraus, the "Jewish Question" and anti-Semitism, Marxism and Zionism. And he expounds his personal attitudes toward such subjects as the role of quotations in criticism, history, and tradition; the meaning of being a "collector"; and French culture and the national character.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Chapman, Maile, PUBLISHER: Graywolf Press, A brilliant and unnerving debut novel about the mysteriously ill patients at a remote hospital in Finland In a remote, piney wood in Finland stands a convalescent hospital called Suvanto, a curving concrete example of austere Scandinavian design. It is the s, and the patients, all women, seek relief from ailments real and imagined. On the lower floors are the stoic Finnish women; on the upper floors are foreign women of privilege--the "up-patients." They are tended to by head nurse Sunny Taylor, an American who has fled an ill-starred life only to retreat behind a mask of crisp professionalism. On a late-summer day a new patient arrives on Sunny's ward-- a faded, irascible former ballroom-dance instructor named Julia Dey. Sunny takes it upon herself to pierce the mystery of Julia's reserve. Soon, Julia's difficulty, her tightly coiled anger, places her at the center of the ward's tangled emotional life. This fraught dynamic animates Maile Chapman's ambitious first novel. As summer turns to fall, and fall to a long, dark winter, the patients hear rumors about changes being implemented at Suvanto by an American obstetrician, Dr. Peter Weber, who is experimenting with a new surgical stitch. Their familiar routine threatened, the women are not happy (they were not happy before), and the story's escalating menace builds to a terrifying conclusion.
