That relationship is likely to contain elements of both cooperation and competition. Territorial disputes such as those over Taiwan and the South China Sea will be an important feature of this competition, but both are traditional disputes, and traditional solutions suggest themselves. A more difficult set of issues relates to U.S.-Chinese competition and cooperation in three domains in which real strategic harm can be inflicted in the current era: nuclear, space, and cyber. Just as a clearer understanding of the fundamental principles of nuclear deterrence maintained adequate stability during the Cold War, a clearer understanding of the characteristics of these three domains can provide the underpinnings of strategic stability between the United States and China in the decades ahead. That is what this book is about. David Gompert and Phillip Saunders assess the prospect of U.S.- Chinese competition in these domains and develop three related analytic findings upon which their recommendations are built. The first is that in each domain, the offense is dominant. The second is that each side will be highly vulnerable to a strike from the other side. And the third is that the retaliating side will still be able to do unacceptable damage to the initiating party. Therefore, the authors make an important recommendation: that the United States propose a comprehensive approach based on mutual restraint whereby it and China can mitigate their growing strategic vulnerabilities. Unlike the Cold War, this mutual restraint regime may not take the form of binding treaties. But patterns of understanding and restraint may be enough to maintain stability."

Methods and techniques are developed to increase personal awareness and education in security, analyze and manage risks, identify security policies, evaluate and certify products, processes and systems. The second workshop was organized by IFIP Working Group 11.8, dedicated to Information Security Education. This year, the workshop was aimed at developing a first draft of an international doctorate program allowing a specialization in IT Security. The draft is based upon selected papers from individuals or groups (from academic, military and government organizations), and discussions at the workshop. This draft will be further refined and eventually published as an IFIP Report. Finally, the last workshop was organized by IFIP Working Group 11.4 on Network Security. The purpose of the workshop was to bring together privacy and anonymity experts from around the world to discuss recent advances and new perspectives on these topics that are increasingly important aspectsin electronic services, especially in advanced distributed applications, such as m-commerce, agent-based systems, P2P, etc. The carefully selected papers gathered in this volume show the richness of the information security domain, as well as the liveliness of the working groups cooperating in the IFIP Technical Committee 11 on Security and Protection in Information Processing Systems. DSP Loudspeakers The traditional setup – amplifiers driving passive loudspeakers – is inefficient, limiting sound quality. Meridian loudspeakers contain a complete, matched audio system with efficient DSP crossovers, multiple DACs and driver-specific amplifiers, giving higher overall quality, less power use, and the performance of a traditional loudspeaker eight times the physical volume. SpeakerLink Traditional audio systems often require large, expensive cables to maintain their performance. Meridian's SpeakerLink uses an “Ethernet style” cable that delivers pristine digital sound and control down a single cable between Meridian components. Meridian Apodising Filter Filters are critical in digital audio. Commonly they introduce distortion and harshness because of "pre-ringing". Early digital recordings suffer from harshness too, due to primitive filters. After painstaking research, Meridian developed a special filter that avoids pre-ringing, so it can be steeper, cleaning up the effects of early filters.
