Paradigms Regained: Pluralism and the Practice of Criticism.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Battersby, James L., PUBLISHER: University of Pennsylvania Press, "Paradigms Regained" is James L Battersby's effort to reclaim for literary study certain legitimate territories that have been needlessly abandoned on the theoretical battlefield. Despite assertions to the contrary by poststructuralist or new historicist critics, Battersby contends, it is still possible to talk intelligently, rigorously, and usefully about such issues as literary intentionality, stable references, determinate meaning, and objective value judgments of literary works.

Eighteenth-Century Literary History: An"mlq" Reader

Eighteenth-Century Literary History: An"mlq" Reader

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Brown / Brown, Marshall / Marshall Brown, PUBLISHER: Duke University Press, Viewed as a crucible of modernity, the eighteenth century has become a special focus of "Modern Language Quarterly," a journal that has led the revival of literary history as a subject for empirical study and theoretical reflection. The essays in this volume, which cover a broad cross-section of eighteenth-century literary history, represent the best studies of this period recently published in "MLQ." While examining different parts of the century, as well as different aspects and countries, contributors explore the intersection of literary studies with history, philosophy, psychology, and the visual arts. They discuss a creative range of topics, including feminism, nationalism, domestic ideology, the classical novel-drama-lyric poetry triad, and both aesthetic and philosophical writings. This span of subjects and approaches extends the focus of "Eighteenth-Century Literary History" beyond its period to project a spirit of inquiry onto literary history in general. "Contributors." Multilingualism and Mother Tongue in Medieval French,

Multilingualism and Mother Tongue in Medieval French,

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Lglu, Catherine / Leglu, Catherine, PUBLISHER: Penn State University Press, The Occitan literary tradition of the later Middle Ages is a marginal and hybrid phenomenon, caught between the preeminence of French courtly romance and the emergence of Catalan literary prose. In this book, Catherine Leglu brings together, for the first time in English, prose and verse texts that are composed in Occitan, French, and Catalan-sometimes in a mixture of two of these languages. This book challenges the centrality of "canonical" texts and draws attention to the marginal, the complex, and the hybrid. It explores the varied ways in which literary works in the vernacular composed between the twelfth and fifteenth centuries narrate multilingualism and its apparent opponent, the mother tongue. Leglu argues that the mother tongue remains a fantasy, condemned to alienation from linguistic practices that were, by definition, multilingual. As most of the texts studied in this book are works of courtly literature, these linguistic encounters are often narrated indirectly, through literary motifs of love, rape, incest, disguise, and travel.

Men of Letters, Writing Lives

Men of Letters, Writing Lives

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Broughton, Trev Lynn, PUBLISHER: Routledge, Trev Lynn Broughton takes an in-depth look at the developments within Victorian auto/biography, and asks what we can learn about the conditions and limits of male literary authority. Providing a feminist analysis of the effects of this literary production on culture, Broughton looks at the increase in professions with a vested interest in the written Life; the speeding up of the Life-and-Letters industry during this period; the institutionalization of Life-writing; and the consequent spread of a network of mainly male practitioners and commentators. This study focuses on two case studies from the period : the theories and achievements of Sir Leslie Stephen and the debate surrounding James Anthony Froude's account of the marriage of Thomas and Jane Welsh Carlyle.

The Cambridge Companion to Horace

The Cambridge Companion to Horace

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Harrison, Stephen, PUBLISHER: Cambridge University Press, Horace is a central author in Latin literature. His work spans a wide range of genres, from iambus to satire, and odes to literary epistle, and he is just as much at home writing about love and wine as he is about philosophy and literary criticism. He also became a key literary figure in the regime of the Emperor Augustus. In this volume a superb international cast of contributors present a stimulating and accessible assessment of the poet, his work, its themes and its reception. This provides the orientation and coverage needed by non-specialists and students, but also suggests fresh and provoking perspectives from which specialists may benefit. Since the last general book on Horace was published half a century ago, there has been a sea-change in perceptions of his work and in the literary analysis of classical literature in general, and this territory is fully charted in this Companion.
