Prior to , the few isolated earth sheltered houses in the United States had been built for primarily aesthetic reasons. Since then, due to the greater awareness of energy conservation and the environment, the number of earth sheltered houses has increased very rapidly. Despite the sizable increase in interest and awareness of the earth sheltered housing option, however, housing starts for this type of structure are still only a tiny fraction of all housing starts. In examining the future of earth sheltered housing, two key questions are raised: Does earth sheltered construction offer sufficient net advantages in relation to other types of housing to sustain a widespread continued increase in its use? Are there legal, regulatory or financing restraints which will make this a difficult option to pursue and hence only sought by the determined home owner/builder? This study discusses these issues in order to determine whether earth sheltered housing use is likely to continue to expand substantially, and whether such expansion is being hindered by unnecessary restraints. If there are such restraints it must be determined whether governmental actions can and should ease these restraints and, in addition, provide a positive boost for this type of construction.

After the Great War, competition from highway vehicles, which had previously not troubled North American railroads to any considerable extent, began to provoke renewed interest in a more economical form of railway motive power, and a number of "rail buses" of varying designs were introduced. Tony Clegg, who wrote Canadian National Steam Power with Ray Corley, is the author of this book. Self-Propelled Cars of the CNR details how, in November , CNR's new diesel-electric car No. completed its record-breaking run across the North American continent, from Montreal to Vancouver. The train established a new world's record for endurance, economy, and sustained speed over such a distance. The book explains how this comparatively small self-propelled vehicle led to their wide-spread usage across the Canadian National system, and its rival, the Canadian Pacific Railway. The book describes how, despite the growing popularity of automobiles, and increasing availability of better roads, these new rail cars were successful in stemming the decline in rail passenger patronage, particularly on low-traffic branch lines. There were many types of these specialized vehicles that are fully described in the book, which contains interesting details on a very important part of Canada's railway heritage, with over 100 photographs and illustrations, including many extremely rare photos in full colour.

MacArthur accepts the Japanese unconditional surrender, thus ending the war. The book chronicles Keehan's readjustment to civilian life as, and his subsequent life's mission: the honoring of Westport's sons and daughters that left the safety of the hearth and home to join the armed services to fight during World War II. However, Westport's World War II monument, called the Honor Roll, which was built during the war, is missing, a victim of both time and neglect. In an effort to find out what happened to the Honor Roll and to have another war memorial rebuilt, Keehan faces numerous obstacles, including opposition from warring town boards and committees, small town politics, and a few vindictive Westport residents bent on derailing Keehan's plans. Battle of Honor is a must read for World War IIbuffs, for those who enjoy history and for anybody who enjoys a good story.
