ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Impelluso, Lucia / Zuffi, Stefano / Hartmann, Thomas Michael, PUBLISHER: J. Paul Getty Trust Publications, As archetypes of human virtue and vice, the gods and heroes of ancient Greece and Rome have figured prominently in Western culture. In art, they have been portrayed time and time again, especially during the Renaissance, Baroque, and Neoclassical periods. Gods and Heroes in Art aims to help museum patrons and art lovers recognize the legendary characters of classical antiquity in art. The characters are each described in entries summarizing their distinctive stories, their special attributes, and the ways in which artists have depicted them. Each entry is richly illustrated with reproductions of works of art in which the god or hero is pictured, giving readers a chance to examine images of the character and to understand the work of art better. The informative guide first surveys the pantheon of the Greco-Roman world, then focuses on characters from the Trojan War and The Odyssey. The next sections describe kings, philosophers, warriors, and other historical figures. The book concludes with useful indexes, including a list of iconographic symbols associated with the subjects, and a bibliography of essential resources.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Lal, Vinay, PH.D., PUBLISHER: Pluto Press (UK), During the media frenzy over the Millennium celebrations, there was hardly any mention of the fact that, for the majority of the world, there was no Millennium at all. This linear understanding of time is a specifically Western - and Christian - concept. This is just one of many examples that Vinay Lal uses to demonstrate that nearly every idea which we take for granted in the west is part of a politics of ideas. Oppression is usually associated with class struggle and other forms of economic monopoly. Lal looks beyond this, deconstructing the cultural assumptions that have emerged alongside capitalism to offer a devastating critique of the politics of knowledge at the heart of all powerbroking. Other topics examined are the concept of 'development', which has provided a mandate for surreptitious colonisation; and the idea of the 'nation state', something we have lived with for no more than two centuries, yet is accepted without question. Linking this to the emergence of 'international governance' through the United Nations, the US, and imperial economic bodies (such as the IMF and WTO), Lal explains how such universalisms came to dominate the trajectory of Western thought.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Alvarez, Walter, PUBLISHER: San Val, "A high drama of discovery and a wonderful adventure in science....It will become a classic". -- Los Angeles Times Book Review How was Tyrannosaurus rex toppled from the apex of creation? Sixty-five million years ago, there was an apocalyptic collision between the earth and a gigantic comet or asteroid. Increasingly, evidence suggests that the impact, which itself took less time than it takes to read this paragraph, triggered the dinosaurs rapid demise. Now Walter Alvarez, a geologist closely associated with the catastrophic theory of dinosaur extinction, makes his case in a gripping work that is both a scientific detective story and a convincing account of "one terrible day in the history of the Earth". Alvarez painstakingly assembles clues from the Italian Apennines to the Yucatan Peninsula and presents them with clarity and suspense. The result is a book of irresistible appeal and undeniable importance by a major figure in contemporary science. ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Vande Woude, George F. / Klein, George, PUBLISHER: Academic Press, The presentation of Foundations in Cancer Research articles has become a focal point of the Advances in Cancer Research series. This volume begins with two such timely reviews, the first of which is by series co-editor George Klein. Dr. Klein evaluates and reviews Leslie Foulds' suggestion that tumors develop in a series of steps and the effect that this 40-year-old hypothesis has had on cancer research. The second Foundations article by L.A. Loeb presents the historical significance of increased mutagenesis and clonal selection on tumor progression. The first regular article, by R. Khosravi-Far and colleagues, analyzes the functional role of Ras in signal transduction and the involvement that Rho family proteins have on Ras. Mark Saville and Roger Watson review supporting evidence that B-Myb may be a critical regulator of the cell cycle. S. Baylin and co-authors compare DNA methylation in normal cells with that in cancerous cells and discuss the specific consequences associated with tumor progression. Last, Steven Grant discusses the use of ara-C as a treatment for various types of cancer and summarizes its cellular metabolism, mode of action and resistance, and the molecular events involved in apoptosis. Created in the past seven years, all of the works included in "On the Margins" consider the ways in which war and conflict around the world affect--or fail to affect--our everyday life. The roster of contributing artists is diverse and talented: Adel Abidin, Laylah Ali, Paolo Canevari, Enrique Chagoya, Willie Cole, Luis Cruz Azaceta, Willie Doherty, Jane Hammond, Martha Rosler, and Do-Ho Suh. The exhibition was curated by Carmon Colangelo, and the catalog features essays by Eleanor Heartney and Paul Krainak addressing the themes and artworks in the exhibition, as well as an illustrated checklist and full artist biographies.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Braude, Stephen E., PUBLISHER: University Press of America, The Limits of Influence is a detailed examination and defense of the evidence for largescale-psychokinesis (PK). It examines the reasons why experimental evidence has not, and perhaps cannot, convince most skeptics that PK is genuine, and it considers why traditional experimental procedures are important to reveal interesting facts about the phenomena. It then examines why PK does not pose a clear threat to the very fabric of science, as many have supposed. The major skeptical challenges to taking large-scale PK seriously and the reason why those challenges are all unsatisfactory are considered. The evidence examined most closely is the turn-of-the-century evidence for physical mediumship, with special attention given to the cases of D.D. Home and Eusapia Palladino. The author compares and evaluates the leading theories of apparitions and considers the extent to which the evidence for collective apparitions can be interpreted as a further type of psychokinetic phenomenon. Finally, the claim that PK (and psychic functioning generally) might occur in refined and extensive forms is considered. It argues that this claim is not as outlandish as many have maintained and that we might have to accept something like the "magical" world view associated with so-called "primitive" societies.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Scow, Kate M. / Scow, K. M., PUBLISHER: CRC Press, The new approach to ecosystem health is proactive. As a result, the scope of environmental studies is growing and the methods are evolving. Integrated Assessment of Ecosystem Health aggressively broadens the range of ecotoxicology to include its related fields. The book begins with John Cairns, Jr.'s predictions and recommendations for the future ecotoxicology: New goals must lead to new techniques.... the field of ecotoxicology is in the early stages of a major paradigm shift that is driven by three interrelated forces: 1) heightened interest in sustainable use of the planet, 2) protection of ecosystem, and 3) the shift from emphasis on avoiding deleterious effects to maintaining them in robust health. Later chapters explore the integration of data, intrinsic remediation studies and the ever- increasing number of associated disciplines that are improving our environmental potential. Methodology, itself, is considered as an evolving tool, always in need examination and revision. Cairns, and his co-authors all advocate a constructive, offensive new form of ecoscience. The consensus of scientists is clear: toxic threat and, especially, habitat destruction are the most important environmentl issues, today. The mandate from Integrated Assessment of Ecosystem Health is also decisive: expand the parameters of ecoscience. The future of life on earth depends upon our ability to grow and learn.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Boscagli, Maurizia, PUBLISHER: Westview Press, When do our bodies cease to be ours alone? At what point and under what political and social circumstances do our bodies become the subtle, but no less complete, inscription of the will of another person, an institution, or a state? Maurizia Boscagli analyzes the early twentieth-century transformation of the male body from Forster's "unassuming black-coated clerk" and Eliot's "young man carbuncular" to the brutal, tanned musculature of fascism. She argues that this new male superman corporeality corresponded precisely with the rise of early mass consumer culture--generally associated with the female--and the advent of fascism. This mechanistic, polished, and vigorous male creature inevitably became an object of political and economic obedience and conformity, and in the concept of "the national body," a fighting machine.Boscagli takes the reader on a highly informed, literary, and cultural excursion through European culture between and . She stops for long, enlightening looks at Oscar Wilde and "The Picture of Dorian Gray," the Good War and the poet Rupert Brooke, Baden-Powell and the British Boy Scouts, and the primitive in D. H. Lawrence's "The Plumed Serpent." This erudite study about our obsessions with male physical perfection undergirds and explains the late-twentieth-century preoccupation with exercise, athletics, diet, and consumerism.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Burchard, Kenneth W. / Wiles, Charles E. / Gann, Donald S., PUBLISHER: Informa Healthcare, The surgical patient may exhibit a variety of subtle and not so subtle clues that a problem, or in the words of the authors a hole, is present. Therefore, when evaluating and managing the critically ill patient, the critical care surgeon must proceed through a series of three questions: Where is the hole? How do I repair the hole? and the most critical question, Why is the hole there? The Clinical Handbook for Surgical Critical Care is a guide to answering these questions, bringing into focus the importance of why is the hole there? and exploring how to effectively make it disappear. Since much of surgical critical illness is secondary to either inadequate circulation, pathological inflammation, or both, the authors pay particular attention to the recognition of these conditions associated with particular disease states. The authors examine the pathophysiology that underlie these disease states and then the physical examination, monitoring, and laboratory results that lead to a diagnosis. They discuss appropriate management of the deranged physiology and provide the supporting evidence for treatment. The Clinical Handbook for Surgical Critical Care serves as a manual for reviewing and contrasting organ physiology during normal and pathological states and recognizing the pathophysiological states related to surgical disease and procedures. It gives you a clear understanding of the link between deficits in the circulation and pathological inflammation that is key to a successful outcome.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Otto, Michael W. / Pollack, Mark H., PUBLISHER: Oxford University Press, USA, Millions of people are prescribed medication for anxiety and panic everyday. One of the most common medications prescribed are tranquilizers which can be addictive and habit-forming. Many individuals may wish to discontinue their medication for various reasons. Some have been free of anxiety symptoms for some time and feel they no longer need meds. Women may wish to become pregnant and others may suffer from bothersome side effects. Whatever the reason, weaning off anxiety medications can be extremely difficult. This Workbook, in conjunction with the corresponding Therapist Guide, outlines a treatment program for helping individuals discontinue their medication. This evidence-based treatment incorporates the basic principles of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which is also effective for treating the underlying Panic Disorder itself. This revised edition of the Workbook teaches the skills necessary to help individuals wean off their medicine through the use of cognitive restructuring techniques, along with exposure to panic and anxiety sensations. New to this edition is a reorganized Chapter 2 that places the core emphasis on the role of fears of anxiety sensations in enhancing the difficulties associated with stopping medication, and a section on discontinuing the use of antidepressants. Blank logs are included for keeping track of homework assignments, as well as for monitoring progress.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Schulz, James H. / Borowski, Allan / Crown, William H., PUBLISHER: Auburn House Pub. Co., This book examines claims that aging populations will create serious economic problems for various nations. It examines the question in large part through the eyes of researchers and legislators in three target countries: Australia, Japan, and the United States. These countries were chosen because of similar states of economic development and because all were experiencing a rapid aging of their populations. A comprehensive overview is provided of the economic issues related to aging populations. Several aspects are explored in more depth. To date, it is the most complete and thorough study of economic issues associated with population aging. After a brief review of the phenomenon of demographic aging, the authors give a summary of the major economic programs offered to the aged. Extensive research is used to evaluate the concept of dependency ratios and to predict the impact on younger and older persons of future economic and demographic growth. This discussion then provides the basis for a review of evolving retirement policies in the three countries. Special attention is given to the way pension plans have been designed, especially early and mandatory retirement policies. An assessment of the adequacy of retirement income follows. The final three chapters are devoted to policy options for the future, given trends in demographic aging. Social scientists and economists will be most interested in this study.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Bell, Duncan, PUBLISHER: Oxford University Press, Political realism dominated the study of international relations during the Cold War. Since then, however, its fortunes have been mixed: pushed onto the backfoot during s, it has in recent years retuned to the centre of scholarly debate in international relations. Yet despite its significance in international relations theory, realism plays little role in contemporary international political theory. It is often associated with a form of crude realpolitik that ignores the role of ethical considerations in political life. This book explores an alternative understanding of realism. The contributors view realism chiefly as a diverse and complex mode of political and ethical theorising rather than either a value-neutral branch of social science or the unreflective defence of the national interest. They analyse a variety of historical and philosophical themes, probing the potential and the pathologies of realist thought. A number of the chapters offer critical interpretations of key figures in the canon of twentieth century realism, including Hans Morgenthau, E. H. Carr, and Reinhold Niebuhr. Others seek to widen the lens through which realism is usually viewed, exploring the writings of Martin Heidegger, Hannah Arendt, and Leo Strauss. Finally, a number of the contributors engage with general issues in political theory, including the meaning and value of pessimism, the relationship between power and ethics, the role of normative political theory, and what might constitute political 'reality.' Straddling international relations and political theory, this book makes a significant contribution to both fields.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Yablonsky, Lewis / Yablonsky / Golinger, Eva, PUBLISHER: New York University Press, The effects of gang violence are witnessed every day on the streets, in the news, and on the movie screen. In all these forums, gangs of young adults are associated with drugs and violence. Yet what is it that prompts young people to participate in violent behavior? And what can be done to extract adolescents from the gangster world of crime, death, and incarceration once they have become involved? In Gangsters: 50 Years of Madness, Drugs, and Death on the Streets of America, Lewis Yablonsky provides answers to the most baffling and crucial questions regarding gangs. Using information gathered from over forty years of experience working with gang members and based on hundreds of personal interviews, many conducted in prisons and in gang neighborhoods, Yablonsky explores the pathology of the gangsters' apparent addiction to incarceration and death. Gangsters is divided into four parts, including a brief history of gangs, the characteristics of gangs, successful approaches for treating gangsters in prison and the community, and concluding with a review and analysis of notable behavioral and social scientific theories of gangs. While condemning their violent behavior in no uncertain terms, Yablonsky offers hope through his belief that, given a chance in an effective treatment program, youths trapped in violent behavior can change their lives in positive ways and, in turn, facilitate positive change in their communities and society at large.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Hutton, Christopher M., PUBLISHER: Polity Press, Race and the Third Reich aims to set out the key concepts, debates and controversies that marked the academic study of race in Nazi Germany. It looks in particular at the discipline of racial anthropology and its relationship to linguistics and human biology. Christopher Hutton identifies the central figures involved in the study of race during the Nazi regime, and traces continuities and discontinuities between Nazism and the study of human diversity in the Western tradition. Whilst Nazi race theory is commonly associated with the idea of a superior "Aryan race" and with the idealization of the Nordic ideal of blond hair, blue eyes and a "long-skull," Nazi race theorists, in common with their colleagues outside Germany, without exception denied the existence of an Aryan race. After official publications were at pains to stress that the term "Aryan" belonged to linguistics and was not a racial category at all. Under the influence of Mendelian genetics, racial anthropologists concluded that there was no necessary link between ideal physical appearance and ideal racial character. In the course of the Third Reich, racial anthropology was marginalized in favour of the rising science of human genetics. However, racial anthropologists played a key role in the crimes of the Nazi state by defining Jews and others as racial outsiders to be excluded at all costs from the body of the German Volk. Anyone studying the Third Reich or who is interested in race theory will find this a fascinating, informative and accessible study.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Maidment, Robert W., PUBLISHER: Center for Urban Policy Research, In order to understand and formulate housing policy and programs, it is necessary to have a working knowledge of the internal economic operation of housing from the points of view of both the investor and the owner. James W. Hughes argues that investors' and owners' behavior and activity tend to be governed by market forces and other realities. In that regard, he begins this work by analyzing market rates of return in real estate and housing undertakings, and the variety of analytical techniques which underlie their determination."Methods of Housing Analysis" is designed to provide urban planners with an introduction to the basic, quantitative techniques associated with the analysis of housing. A myriad of specific analytical methods has evolved in each of the professions concerned with this subject area. Planners, investors, developers, engineers, appraisers, social scientists, and governmental officials all tend to exhibit unique perspectives when examining housing and have developed their analytical frameworks accordingly. The work is comprised of an extensive discussion by the author, detailed case studies and examples, and a number of essays by leading experts that detail specific analytical procedures and demonstrate their use. The book is divided into four major sections: analysis of the internal operation of housing; basic cost-revenue analysis; expanded cost-revenue/benefit analysis; and government regulation of housing. The thorough nature of Hughes' discussion and of the related readings makes this volume an ideal textbook and reference source.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Graveline, Duane / Kendrick, Malcolm, PUBLISHER: Duane Graveline MD MPH, The purpose in the choice of the title The Statin Damage Crisis is to draw attention to the thousands of statin damaged people who have written to Dr Graveline about their disabling neuropathies, myopathies and a variety of neurodegenerative conditions such as ALS and Parkinsonism associated with statin use. Although much of the book's content will be familiar to readers of Statin Drugs Side Effects, (this was originally planned as a new edition) the Statin Damage Crisis adds much new material that Dr Graveline has learned of in the past two years. Dr Graveline states: "Early on my NASA doctors told me my amnesia response to statins was nothing but a coincidence but I persevered to write my first book, Lipitor, Thief of Memory." "Then I learned of statin damage to nerves and muscles and profound behavioral and personality changes, demanding I write a second book, "Statin Drugs Side Effects." Even this broadly encompassing book was insufficient to describe what I have learned more recently of the truly dark side of statins - their ability to alter the very fabric of our makeup." "I had long wondered why muscle and nerve damage seemed permanent and even progressive like my own ALS-like condition. Now I have found that the ultimate effect of statins on CoQ10 and dolichols is to damage the DNA of the mitochondrial life-force within our cells - mitochondrial mutation masquerading as premature old age."
