METODI MATEMATICI DELLA MECCANICA CLASSICA V.I. ARNOLD 478 Pagine, NUOVO In meccanica classica si utilizzano metodi e concetti matematici molto diversi: equazioni differenziali e flussi di fase, applicazioni regolari e varieti, gruppi ed algebre di Lie, geometria simplettica e teoria ergodica. Molte delle moderne teorie matematiche hanno avuto la loro origine in problemi di meccanica e solo in seguito hanno assunto quella forma astratta ed assiomatica che ne rende cosi difficile lo studio. In questo libro l'apparato matematico della meccanica classica viene costruito sin dall'inizio, in modo tale che non si richiedono al lettore conoscenze preliminari, diverse da quelle che si ottengono nei corsi normali di analisi (derivata, integrali, equazioni differenziali), di geometria (spazio lineare, vettori) e di algebra lineare (operatori lineari, forme quadratiche). Per mezzo di tale apparato matematico vengono esaminate tutte le questioni fondamentali relative ai sistemi dinamici, compresa la teoria delle oscillazioni, la teoria del moto del corpo rigido e il formalismo hamiltoniano. L'autore ha cercato ovanque di mostrare l'aspetto geometrico e qualitativo dei fenomeni. In questo senso il libro e piÚ vicino al corso di meccanica teorica per fisici teorici che ai corsi tradizionali di meccanica teorica usati dai matematici. Una parte significativa del libro è dedicata ai principi variazionali e alla dinamica analitica. F. Rlein caratterizzo la dinamica analitica, nelle sue Lezioni sullo sviluppo della matematica nel diciannovesimo secolo, nel modo seguente: "I fisici possono ricavare da questa teoria solo una piccola parte di informazioni per i loro problemi, e gli ingegneri nessuna.. Lo sviluppo della scienza negli ultimi anni ha decisamente confutato questa osservazione. II formalismo hamiltoniano e alla base della meccanica quantistica e rappresenta attualmente uno degli strumenti piÚ frequentemente usati fra i metodi matematici della fisica. Dopo che fu riconosciuto il vatore della struttura simplettica e del principio di Huggens per tutti i possibili problemi di ottimizzazione, le equazioni di Hamilton sono state costantemente usate nei calcoli ingegneristici in questo campo.
