He began as an apprentice weaver and developed into a poet and playwright. He served as protege, publisher, or patron of Pope, Johnson, Fielding, Richardson, Voltaire, Rousseau, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, Edward Young, Joseph and Thomas Warton, Thomas Gray, Horace Walpole, David Garrick, Tobias Smollett, Oliver Goldsmith, Laurence Sterne, Thomas Percy, Edmund Burke, and others. Virtually all significant mid-century English writers had some connection with Dodsley or with Tully's Head, the bookshop Alexander Pope helped the young Dodsley initiate. Tully's Head, in fact, evolved into the center for the "Athenian Nights" memorialized by Dodsley's friend Samuel Johnson. Harry M. Solomon is the first scholar to integrate recent research by Elizabeth Eisenstein and Alvin Kernin on the impact of print--including print's impact on political activism and canon formation--into the study of an individual bookseller. Dodsley, he notes, presided over a period of transition: as Edmund Moore observed in a issue of Dodsley's periodical "The World, "the old patronage of learning by "the GREAT" has been superseded by "the new patrons, the BOOKSELLERS." Solomon takes this transformation seriously, treating Dodsley as much more than the stereotypical bookseller unimaginatively reacting to the marketplace. Formerly controlled by patronage and state censorship, the world of letters had been shaped by an oral, aristocratic, amateur, authoritarian, and court-centered tradition. Solomon shows Dodsley at the center of the change to a new democratic world of letters, a world driven by print technology and market demand. As the bookseller who played a pivotal role in the careers of both Pope and Johnson, Dodsley published the works of the last genius of the old aristocratic order (Pope) and of the first genius of the new age of print (Johnson). Solomon documents Dodsley's ingenious articulation of his financial interests in newspapers, journals, and book publishing, proving that contrary to the traditional view of booksellers, Dodsley was no insignificant tradesman accidentally associated with genius. Solomon presents Dodsley, in fact, as the most influential English literary force during his lifetime. Chronicling Dodsley's close involvement first with the couplet masterpieces of Pope and Johnson and later with the ambitious odes of Thomas Gray and the Wartons, Solomon argues that Dodsley's enterprises were the impetus for a conscious shift from the Augustan to the Romantic era--a shift that mirrors precisely the development of Dodsley's own plays and poems.

Direttamente da questa prima vicenda scaturisce la storia di Lauryn, come in un gioco di scatole cinesi. Il filo logico è flebile, pronto a spezzarsi in qualsiasi momento. Al lettore è demandato un ruolo certamente attivo nella storia: quello esterno, di puro godimento tratto dal voltare le pagine, e quello interno, ovvero interpretare ogni segno e sbrogliare alfine la matassa creata con abilità da Scott Ciencin, romanziere molto promettente. Lâ€(TM)aspetto grafico di questa miniserie contribuisce a creare ulteriormente lâ€(TM)atmosfera surreale del viaggio onirico/fisico che vivono i protagonisti: Ben Templesmith lo conosciamo già per il suo 30 giorni di notte, e possiamo dire che con le storie horror si trova ormai a suo agio. Aadi Salman invece esordisce proprio con questa opera, ed il suo stile sporco e graffiante lascia un marchio impresso nella memoria del lettore, che più volte si domanderà che forma abbiano le creature che popolano la tranquilla e sorridente cittadina: questo gioco di mostrare senza far vedere troppo si dimostra molto efficace e affascinante. Citiamo anche la presenza di alcune copertine di Ashley Wood, bravissimo disegnatore di cui ricordiamo, tra le tante opere, uno splendido annual dedicato a Spawn.

Quello che effettivamente si chiede ad un braccialetto di sopravvivenza completo, è: 1. all'incirca 5 metri di paracord per tendere il telo, appendere in alto il cibo al riparo dagli animali, costruireun attrezzo, ecc...; 2. una bussola per orientarsi i condizioni avverse; 3. un fischietto per farsi trovare (segnalare posizione) e soccorrere; 4. un acciarino ed una piccola ma tagliente lama per accendersi un fuoco (la juta, una volta sfilacciata, serve da esca pronta per il fuoco) e cucinare e/o sterilizzare dell'acqua; 5. l'occorrente per pescare e cacciare uccelli: 6 ami, 10 m di lenza, 6 piombini, gancetto con girella incorporata; 6. l'occorrente per illuminare un rifugio improvvisato: bulbo led, 2 pilette LR44 (non incluse), filo di rame per fare i contatti. 7. la piccola ma tagliente lama, presente sulla faccia posteriore della capsula di sopravvivenza, si presta per tutti gli usi che la richiedono (tagliare cordini, far scintillare l'acciarino, ecc...). Riunendo il tutto si ottiene un kit minimalista (ma efficiente) di sopravvivenza sempre a portata di...POLSO In più il mini kit, progettato come se fosse un orologio, può essere sfilabile e reinseribile (anche in un altro bracciale) con estrema facilità e senza dover per questo distruggere il bracciale (come invece accade con altri bracciali visti su web). Lo stesso vale per l'acciarino, basta sfilarlo e re-infilarlo dopo l'uso. Il bracciale non ingombra più di quanto avrebbe fatto un orologio di tendenza e comunque è modulabile (kit caccia/pesca sfilabile). Insieme al bracciale vi sarà recapitato un foglio di istruzioni che permette di sfruttare al massimo le potenzialità di questo, ormai celebre, bracciale da sopravvivenza. Questo bracciale può essere di colore nero, khaki o verde militare ed è adatto a polsi di circonferenza da cm, per misure di giropolso diverse si prega di comunicarmele a fine asta. La fibbia /fischietto può essere bi- o monocolore a seconda la disponibilità.
