Gerardo Guerrieri (Matera, 4 febbraio - Roma, 24 aprile ) è stato uno degli intellettuali più significativi e influenti del teatro italiano e internazionale. Fra i protagonisti, come regista e animatore, della rifondazione del teatro italiano negli anni Quaranta, è stato drammaturgo, consulente e traduttore per Luchino Visconti. Ha collaborato con Vittorio De Sica come aiuto regista e sceneggiatore di Ladri di Biciclette e Sciuscià. Alla ne degli anni Cinquanta ha fondato con la moglie Anne d'Arbeloff il Teatro Club, la prima e più importante iniziativa in Italia per la scoperta e il dialogo con le culture teatrali internazionali. Saggista, traduttore e storico del teatro, Guerrieri ha suggerito inedite relazioni tra il mondo dei libri e quello delle scene. Ha diretto con Paolo Grassi la Collezione di teatro Einaudi. È stato critico teatrale fine e acutissimo per diverse testate, fra cui «L'Unità» e «Il Giorno», e ha redatto alcune fra le voci più importanti dell'Enciclopedia dello Spettacolo. È stato definito il maggior traduttore italiano dall'inglese e dal russo per le sue versioni di opere di Arthur Miller, Tennessee Williams, Anton C?echov, William Shakespeare.

Author Hartig begins by assessing the publications of Jean-Ferdinand Berthier (). Berthier wrote about Auguste Bebian, Abbe de l'Epee, and Abbe Sicard, all of whom taught at the National Institute for the Deaf in Paris. Although Berthier presented compelling portraits of their entire lives, he paid special attention to their political and social activism, his main interest. Yvonne Pitrois () pursued her particular interest in the lives of deaf-blind people. Her biography of Helen Keller focused on her subject's destiny in conjunction with her unique relationship with Anne Sullivan. Corinne Rocheleau-Rouleau () recounted the historical circumstances that led French-Canadian pioneer women to leave France. The true value of her work resides in her portraits of these pioneer women: maternal women, warriors, religious women, with an emphasis on their lives and the choices they made. "Crossing the Divide" reveals clearly the passion these biographers shared for narrating the lives of those they viewed as heroes of an emerging French deaf community. All three used the genre of biography not only as a means of external exploration but also as a way to plumb their innermost selves and to resolve ambivalence about their own deafness.

Part of the answer lies in the design of public policy that unmistakenly works to advance citizenship by listening to, educating, and involving ordinary people. Rather than serve mainly the narrow interests of powerful groups who are socially constructed as "deserving" or issuing discipline and punishment to powerless people socially constructed as "undeserving", public policy needs to advance citizenship, solve problems, pursue justice, and balance the interests of individuals with a concern for the collective good. Policy Design for Democracy is a theoretically sophisticated work that draws examples from a wide array of public policy arenas. It summarizes four current approaches to policy theory -- pluralism, policy sciences, public choice, and critical theory -- and shows how none offers more than a partial view of the policy design characteristics that support and perpetuate democracy. Schneider and Ingram then develop a theory of public policymaking predicated on understanding how differences in policy designs are related to differences in the contexts from which they emerge and how these designs have an impact on democracy. One of the first books to examine systematically the substantive aspects of public policy, Policy Design for Democracy is written clearly and with sufficient examples to make it easily understandable by undergraduates. Its linkage of public policy to citizenship is an important antidote to the overly technical and goal-driven orientation adopted by the policy sciences and public choice, and to the overly self-interested and strategic political games found inpluralist theory. Schneider and Ingram close by recommending a series of reforms that will improve policy designs and help restore citizen confidence in government.

Whether the true solution belongs to the sphere of psychology or of physiology is a question that remains unanswered. But, as the case is one of the most puzzling in the annals of love, it may be well to set forth the circum-stances very briefly, to weigh the theories that have already been advanced, and to suggest another. Jonathan Swift was of Yorkshire stock, though he happened to be born in Dublin, and thus is often spoken of as "the great Irish satirist," or "the Irish dean." It was, in truth, his fate to spend much of his life in Ireland, and to die there, near the cathedral where his remains now rest; but in truth he hated Ireland and everything connected with it, just as he hated Scotland and everything that was Scottish. He was an Englishman to the core.
