Two concluding chapters extend the cases and analyses: the first looks at how and why the teachers profiled in this book construct their individual teaching practices, in terms of three distinct but interacting sets of influences--personal, organizational, and policy factors; the second explores the prospects for promoting what the author defines as ambitious teaching and learning. Many policymakers assume that standards-based reforms support the efforts of ambitious teachers, but until we better understand how they and the students in their classes think and act, that assumption is hollow at best. This book is a must have for faculty and students in the field of social studies education, and broadly relevant across the fields of curriculum studies and educational policy.

Though considered a pedant, a popularizer--"Escape from Freedom," "The Sane Society," and "The Art of Loving," among others, were best-sellers -and an "outsider" in many psychoanalytic circles, Fromm played a historic role in the development of the discipline. As a member of Freud's "loyal opposition" with strong leanings toward the "dissident fringe;' he helped effect the transfer of productive ideas from the periphery to the mainstream of the psychoanalytic movement. Daniel Burston's meticulous elucidation of these ideas unravels the numerous strands--philosophical, literary, and social--that formed a part of Freud's own work and of Fromm's sympathetic, but not uncritical, reaction to Freudian orthodoxy. Despite his grounding in the tradition of Freud, contemporaries and former associates persistently misunderstood Fromm's work. Insofar as he attempted to decipher the ideological subtexts to Freudian theory, analytically oriented theorists doing clinical or social research avoided his ideas. His Marxist leanings and his radically historical approach to human behavior made it all but impossible for mainstream academic psychologists to grasp his meaning, much less to grant it any validity. At the same time, his humanistic and ethical concerns struck many psychologists as grossly unscientific. Practical and intellectual constraints have conspired to ensure that Fromm's impact has been peripheral at best. Burston's eloquent, evenhanded reassessment of Fromm's life and work cuts through the ideological and political underbrush to reveal his pivotal role as a theorist and a critic of modern psychoanalysis. It leads readers back to Freud, whose theoretical and clinical contributions Fromm refracted and extended, and on to controversies that remain a vital part of contemporary intellectual life.

Nuvola Rossa e il suo popolo
Vendo questo libro, in ottime condizioni, nuovo. NUVOLA ROSSA E IL SUO POPOLO, di George E.hyde, Bompiani Overlook. L'attenzione dell'autore si concentra sui fatti del XIX secolo e in particolare sulle vicende che coinvolsero, politicamente e militarmente, due indiscussi capi Sioux, Nuvola Rossa e Coda Chiazzata, e le agenzie che portarono il loro nome. Di questi due grandi leader viene dato un ritratto anche psicologico probabilmente insuperato per la profondità dell'indagine, e benché Hyde sia certamente dalla parte degli Indiani, non si fa scrupolo di sottolinearne gli errori o i lati meno nobili del carattere: le invidie, l'ambizione, le decisioni sbagliate. Memorabili sono le pagine in cui vengono descritte le due visite a Washington, dal Grande Padre. Non si tratta però di un libro biografico, ma più generalmente storico. Di qui l'analisi dei tratti stipulati tra Bianchi e Uomini Rossi, il sorgere degli avamposti militari e commerciali, le battaglie (Little Big Horn, Rosebud, Sand Creek), i piccoli scontri, gli errori di valutazione commessi da una parte e dall'altra e anche la cecità di quel Partito della Pace che nell'Est si arroccò su posizioni in definitiva sterili, contribuendo, involontariamente, all'annientamento di quello stesso poppò che invece voleva salvare. Una particolare attenzione è riservata alla realtà delle riserve, l'invenzione del governo per risolvere il problema indiano. I momenti di grave crisi sono osservati da più prospettive, smascherando le cause false e cercando di evidenziare i contraccolpi che certe azioni avranno nell'immediato e nel futuro della pace nel territorio. Ovviamente non mancano i grandi personaggi di questa tragica epopea: Cavallo Pazzo, Toro Seduto, il presidente Grant, il generale Custer. E, sullo sfondo, il lento ma inesorabile disfacimento di una antica cultura antica che non ha i mezzi per resistere all'invasione della grande marea bianca. ISBN:
