Ideals, Varieties, and Algorithms: An Introduction to

Ideals, Varieties, and Algorithms: An Introduction to

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Cox, David / Little, John / O'Shea, Donal, PUBLISHER: Springer, Algebraic Geometry is the study of systems of polynomial equations in one or more variables, asking such questions as: Does the system have finitely many solutions, and if so how can one find them? And if there are infinitely many solutions, how can they be described and manipulated? The solutions of a system of polynomial equations form a geometric object called a variety; the corresponding algebraic object is an ideal. There is a close relationship between ideals and varieties which reveals the intimate link between algebra and geometry. Written at a level appropriate to undergraduates, this book covers such topics as the Hilbert Basis Theorem, the Nullstellensatz, invariant theory, projective geometry, and dimension theory. The algorithms to answer questions such as those posed above are an important part of algebraic geometry. Although the algorithmic roots of algebraic geometry are old, it is only in the last forty years that computational methods have regained their earlier prominence. New algorithms, coupled with the power of fast computers, have led to both theoretical advances and interesting applications, for example in robotics and in geometric theorem proving. In addition to enhancing the text of the second edition, with over 200 pages reflecting changes to enhance clarity and correctness, this third edition of Ideals, Varieties and Algorithms includes: A significantly updated section on Maple in Appendix C; Updated information on AXIOM, CoCoA, Macaulay 2, Magma, Mathematica and SINGULAR; A shorter proof of the Extension Theorem presented in Section 6 of Chapter 3. From the 2nd Edition: "I consider the book to be wonderful.... The exposition is very clear, there are many helpful pictures, and there are a great many instructive exercises, some quite challenging... offers the heart and soul of modern commutative and algebraic geometry." -The American Mathematical Monthly

Social Learning Theory and the Explanation of Crime

Social Learning Theory and the Explanation of Crime

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Akers, Ronald L. / Jensen, Gary F., PUBLISHER: Transaction Publishers, Social learning theory has been called the dominant theory of crime and delinquency in the United States, yet it is often misrepresented. This latest volume in the distinguished Advances in Criminological Theory series explores the impact of this theory. Some equate it with differential association theory. Others depict it as little more than a micro-level appendage to cultural deviance theories. There have been earlier attempts to clarify the theory's unique features in comparison to other theories, and others have applied it to broader issues. These efforts are extended in this volume, which focuses on developing, applying, and testing the theory on a variety of criminal and delinquent behavior. It applies the theory to treatment and prevention, moving social learning into a global context for the twenty-first century. This comprehensive volume includes the latest work, tests, and theoretical advances in social learning theory and will be particularly helpful to criminologists, sociologists, and psychologists. It may also be of interest to those concerned with current issues relating to delinquency, drug use/abuse, and drinking/alcohol abuse.

The Mechanical Universe: Introduction to Mechanics and Heat

The Mechanical Universe: Introduction to Mechanics and Heat

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Olenick, Richard / Apostol, Tom M. / Goodstein, David L., PUBLISHER: Cambridge University Press, This important textbook is based on, though independent of, an educational TV series to be broadcast on public television in the United States. Its aim is to guide students and general readers to an understanding of how the physical world works; physics is presented as a human endeavour, with historical development forming a thread throughout the text. The prerequisites are minimal, only basic algebra and trigonometry since the necessary calculus is developed in the text, with physics providing the motivation. New concepts are introduced at the natural, logical point with many historical references to place physics in a social perspective. Many topics from twentieth-century physics are included, for example energy, low temperature physics, relativity and black holes. The book is attractively and profusely illustrated and will be welcomed by students and also by general readers for whom this will be a stimulating alternative to other, less-thorough treatments.

The field to be covered is extremely wide and it is nearly impossible to treat all of them here. The material included in the monograph is recent and hard to find in other books. It is accessible to any reader with reasonable background in real analysis and acquaintance with its related areas. All results are presented in an elementary way and the book could also serve as a textbook for an advanced graduate course. The book deserves a warm welcome to those who wish to learn the subject and it will also be most valuable as a source of reference in the field. It will be an invaluable reading for mathematicians, physicists and engineers and also for graduate students, scientists and scholars wishing to keep abreast of this important area of research.

The Fields of Electronics: Understanding Electronics Using

The Fields of Electronics: Understanding Electronics Using

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Morrison, Ralph, PUBLISHER: Wiley-Interscience, A practical new approach that brings together circuit theory and field theory for the practicing engineer To put it frankly, the traditional education of most engineers and scientists leaves them often unprepared to handle many of the practical problems they encounter. The Fields of Electronics: Understanding Electronics Using Basic Physics offers a highly original correction to this state of affairs. Most engineers learn circuit theory and field theory separately. Electromagnetic field theory is an important part of basic physics, but because it is a very mathematical subject, the connection to everyday problems is not emphasized. Circuit theory, on the other hand, is by its nature very practical. However, circuit theory cannot describe the nature of a facility, the interconnection of many pieces of hardware, or the power grid that interfaces each piece of hardware. The Fields of Electronics offers a unique approach that brings the physics and the circuit theory together into a seamless whole for today's practicing engineers. With a clear focus on the real-world problems confronting the practitioner in the field, the book thoroughly details the principles that apply to: * Capacitors, inductors, resistors, and transformers * Utility power and circuit concepts * Grounding and shielding * Radiation * Analog and digital signals * Facilities and sites Written with very little mathematics, and requiring only some background in electronics, this book provides an eminently useful new way to understand the subject of electronics that will simplify the work of every novice, experienced engineer, and scientist.
