James Cameron torna dopo sei anni sul luogo del disastro del transatlantico RMS Titanic, dove si era recato per girare il suo film più celebre Titanic. Utilizzando le più recenti tecnologie può esplorare e filmare parti della nave a cui non aveva accesso durante le sue precedenti visite. A bordo della nave oltre a marinai e scienziati è stato invitato anche l'attore Bill Paxton, amico di Cameron, che nel film del interpretava proprio il ruolo dell'esploratore e cacciatore di tesori che dà inizio alla vicenda.
