A Crime in the Neighborhood

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Berne, Suzanne, PUBLISHER: Owl Publishing Company, An auspicious debut novel by a young writer who will remind readers of Anne Lamott and Anne Tyler Crime in the Neighborhood centers on a headline event-- the molestation and murder of a twelve-year-old boy in a Washington, D.C., suburb. At the time of the murder, , Marsha was nine years old and as an adult she still remembers that summer as a time when murder and her own family's upheaval were intertwined. Everyone, it seemed to Marsha at the time, was committing crimes. Her father deserted his family to take up with her mother's younger sister. Her teenage brother and sister were smoking and shoplifting, and her mother was "flirting" with Mr. Green, the new next-door neighbor. Even the president of the United States seemed to be a crook. But it is Marsha's own suspicions about who committed this crime that has the town up in arms and reveals what happens when fear runs wild.

People belong to their neighborhood first, and that neighborhood belongs to the city." -- Karen Boyle, Seattle neighborhood activist. Seattle, Washington, has earned a national reputation as a "City of Neighborhoods" and a place where citizens take an active role in finding solutions to the problems of urban life. The efforts of Seattle's neighborhood-based councils and not-for-profit organizations were also seen as part of a national "neighborhood movement" that achieved prominence in the s and s. Originally completed in as a series of radio programs exploring the history and directions of the neighborhood movement, "In the City of Neighborhoods" was written and produced by award-winning journalist Arthur J. O'Donnell. The series also highlighted economic survival skills for non-profit organizations during an era of budget constraints. In this edition of "In the City of Neighborhoods," O'Donnell augments his exploration of neighborhood activism with later articles covering the Not In My Back Yard (NIMBY) syndrome. This special section, called "It's My Backyard, Too," provides insights into the arguments and tactics of those who oppose power plants, transmission lines and other energy developments.

Guns and Garlic: Myths and Realities of Organized Crime

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Homer, Frederic D., PUBLISHER: Purdue University Press, "With the appearance of Homer's study, it is no longer possible to base any serious work about organized crime on the superficial debate over whether or not this set of activities is dominated by one or more particular ethnic groups," writes political scientist Michael A. Weinstein in his introduction. "Homer removes the study of organized crime from the realm of sensationalism and ethnic chauvinism, and places it in the context of contemporary American social structure. He reviews prevalent myths and hypotheses about organized crime and critically analyzes them in the framework of contemporary organization theory. In this context, organized crime is analyzed in its economic, political, ethnic, and social class dimensions."

More Guns, Less Crime: Understanding Crime and Gun-Control

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Lott, John R., Jr., PUBLISHER: University of Chicago Press, On its initial publication in , John R. Lott's "More Guns, Less Crime" drew both lavish praise and heated criticism. More than a decade later, it continues to play a key role in ongoing arguments over gun-control laws: despite all the attacks by gun-control advocates, no one has ever been able to refute Lott's simple, startling conclusion that more guns mean less crime. Relying on the most rigorously comprehensive data analysis ever conducted on crime statistics and right-to-carry laws, the book directly challenges common perceptions about the relationship of guns, crime, and violence. For this third edition, Lott draws on an additional ten years of data--including provocative analysis of the effects of gun bans in Chicago and Washington, D.C--that brings the book fully up to date and further bolsters its central contention.

The Collected Raffles Stories

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Hornug, E. W. / Hornung, E. W. / Bloom, Clive, PUBLISHER: Oxford University Press, USA, This entertaining collection of crime stories presents the adventures of one of fiction's most enduring characters, the hyper-elegant A.J. Raffles, man-about-town, thief, and "finest slow bowler of his generation." With his partner in crime, Bunny Manders, Raffles preys on the rich, the greedy, and the unspeakably vulgar. His talents are exercised not only in London, but as far afield as Italy, Australia, and South Africa at the height of the Boer War. Throughout these exciting yarns the emphasis on panache, with intensifying suggestions of fallibility, goes to the heart of late Victorian attitudes and values.

Sexed Work: Gender, Race, and Resistance in a Brooklyn Drug

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Maher, Lisa, PUBLISHER: Oxford University Press, USA, Based on three years of ethnographic work in New York City, this book provides the first detailed account of the economic lives of women drug users. Set in a neighborhood plagued with AIDS, Sexed Work reveals the economic lives of a group of women whose options have been severely circumscribed, not only by drug use, but also by poverty, racism, violence, and enduring marginality. Maher draws extensively on the women's own words to describe how structures and relations of gender, race and class are articulated by divisions of labor in the street-level drug economy. This rich, nuanced and theoretically sophisticated study of "crime as work" will be compelling reading for all those interested in the way in which women deal with the intersection of gender, race, and work.

Second Wounds: Victims' Rights and the Media in the United

Second Wounds: Victims' Rights and the Media in the United

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Rentschler, Carrie A., PUBLISHER: Duke University Press, The U.S. victims' rights movement has transformed the way that violent crime is understood and represented in the United States. It has expanded the concept of victimhood to include family members and others close to direct victims, and it has argued that these secondary victims may be further traumatized through their encounters with insensitive journalists and the cold, impersonal nature of the criminal justice system. This concept of extended victimization has come to dominate representations of crime and the criminal legal apparatus in the United States. In "Second Wounds," Carrie A. Rentschler examines how the victims' rights movement brought about such a marked shift in how Americans define and portray crime. Analyzing the movement's effective mobilization of activist networks and its implementation of media strategies, she interprets texts such as press kits, online victim memorials, media training manuals for victims' advocates, and booklets advising journalists on covering crime from a victim's perspective. Rentschler also provides a genealogy of the victims' rights movement from its emergence in the s into the twenty-first century. She explains that while a "get tough on crime" outlook dominates the movement, the concept of secondary victimization has been invoked by activists across the political spectrum, including anti-death penalty advocates, who contend that the families of death-row inmates are also secondary victims of violent crime and the criminal justice system.
